Chapter 144: Chapter 97: I’m Waiting for My Teammates, What Are You Waiting For?_2
Wayne watched on as Marina acquired another label—bodyguard.
The circle wasn’t just chaotic, but also particularly adept at playing the game.
The shipyard’s reservoir had been drained, and dozens of strong employees were cleaning out the silt. Wayne, looking down from above, saw the all too familiar Inverted Pentagram.
Hell Faith!
Under the Lenovo Member’s basement, the reservoir was a well amplified by tenfold, representing an impure Magic Array also scaled up tenfold.
The workers buried themselves in their work, neither curious nor whispering to each other, their trained demeanors more akin to soldiers.
Heidi smilingly stepped aside, and next it was the turn of the two mages to perform.
Wayne didn’t move; Kel leaped into the reservoir, a crucifix pendant appearing in his hand at some point as he murmured excerpts from the Bible.
A halo of Holy Light radiated around him, his steps light yet solemn, leaving deep white marks upon the Inverted Pentagram with every move.
The Inverted Pentagram Magic Array began to rotate, ripples of white emanating from the ground, and as Kel slowly raised his hands, a warm and healing energy brought an unprecedented peace and satisfaction to everyone.
In that moment, Kel seemed as divine as an Angel.
Wayne: (눈_눈)
Hitting the F key to enter a tank makes it hard to empathize with an Angel, his eyes must have been playing tricks on him just now.
The Inverted Pentagram rotated into a standard Pentagram, Holy Light dispelling evil, as well as the protective power of the Devil. The bricks at the bottom of the reservoir began to collapse, revealing a spiraling passage leading downward.
Kel lightly leaped next to Heidi, his eyes brimming with Holy Light, and coupled with his charming face, calling himself an Angel was not an exaggeration.
Heidi’s breathing had already quickened.
Kel modestly flexed his muscles, and Heidi’s demeanor grew significantly more respectful.
The workers brought wooden crates, and using crowbars, they opened them to retrieve submachine guns. In just two minutes, a squad of armed soldiers were ready for action.
Heidi and Marina geared up, and Wayne and Kel also acquired weapons for self-defense. Five soldiers led the way, entering the pitch-dark passage down the spiral staircase.
Wayne walked at the rear, shaking off almost imperceptible plant spores from his trouser leg before entering the tunnel.
He observed the carvings on the tunnel walls, all of them depicting scenes related to suffering and punishment, reminding him of Hell. They stood at the entrance to Hell, the abyss below linked directly to Hell.
The abyss was only 20 meters deep, the flashlight’s beam easily reaching the bottom where a mural blocked their path.
On the wall was a Blood Totem, a mark of the Evil God, warning those who came to leave quickly.
On either side of the totem, rudimentary paintings depicted the Evil God’s descent upon the mortal world, dark clouds enveloping the city’s sky, the Tempest roaring, waves surging high, and dark figures standing tall upon the earth.
Kel studied the murals intently and whispered to Wayne, "I’ve seen similar murals in the ancient texts of Heavenly Father’s Court; this is troublesome. The Bart Family’s dealings with the Devil seem to extend beyond just the Giant Dragon’s relics."
Your identity is anything but simple, tell me, are you an investigator from the Heavenly Father’s Court?
Wayne shrugged his shoulders; he was a newbie, and even Life Alliance hadn’t quite made sense to him yet, let alone the beliefs of Heaven and Hell.
Over by Heidi, the soldiers couldn’t find the mechanism to open the wall and were estimating the thickness of the bricks in preparation for explosives.
Kel, with his nerves on edge, volunteered information about how to trigger the mechanism; it wasn’t that complicated -- the blood of a Bart Family member would suffice. No need to resort to explosives at every turn.
Madam Marina drew her dagger and slashed her hand, following Kel’s instructions, the blood dripping onto the Blood Totem.
Boom────────
The sound of turning gears echoed from below, and the ground beneath their feet suddenly collapsed. A wind pressure roared, and an irresistible suction force pulled them all into the darkness.
Meanwhile, two golden retrievers, catching wind of the disturbance, came to the empty shipyard, smoothly and safely reaching the spiral passage.
Veronica switched on her flashlight, tossed a stone to find her path, and alongside Ronica, arrived in front of the totem wall.
Only two minutes had passed, and the collapsed ground had been restored as if nothing had happened, no sign of damage could be seen.
The mural on the wall had also changed; gone were the Blood Totem and the depiction of the Evil God’s descent. In its place, was a simplified depiction of an Evil Dragon.
The Evil Dragon soared in the sky, and nine Knights stood tall upon the earth, engaging in a brutal battle. One Knight with a long sword cleft the Evil Dragon’s chest open.
The fierce battle led to the collapse of a world, with the nine Knights each cast into vortexes. The Giant Dragon clutched its chest in a wail, its heart missing, whereabouts unknown.
Gazing at the shining Knights, Veronica’s eyes sparkled with excitement, humming and mimicking the same pose as in the mural, pretending to strike Ronica in the chest with her finger-sword.
"Evil Dragon, take my sword."
Bang!
After getting slashed, he held his head and squatted on the ground, no longer bringing up the matter of slaying the dragon.
Veronica’s heart rate accelerated, the murals about the Giant Dragon on the walls made her blood surge with an uncontrollable excitement. She pulled out a small self-defense knife from her waist and struggled to make a few cuts on her finger.
She couldn’t bring herself to cut deeply, and besides, it wouldn’t break through the defense.
Finally, she squeezed out a trickle of crimson blood and, before the wound could heal, hastily smeared it on the mural.
Boom—
The sound of gears in the mechanism turning could be heard, and two golden eyes looked down as they fell.
----
"Damn it, that guy almost got me killed."
In the dim underground river, Wayne stood up, leaning on the slippery walls, and recalling the scene he had just experienced, he could not help but feel a sense of dread.
After the ground collapsed, a group of people fell into the water channel slide and were scattered by the branching waterways.
Wayne had thought of many things, but he had not anticipated that the magic trap would be related to a rapid water descent. He looked around at the glowing algae in the caverns and thought that it made sense.
The shipyard had been built two years ago. Mobilizing a large group to build an underground palace would have led to widespread knowledge; it made more sense for the followers of the Evil God to build a secret base in the underground river, given the geographical conditions of Dragonheart Island.
The main feature being darkness and secrecy.
The underground waterway was gloomy, but with his Super Vision, Wayne used the reflection from the fluorescent algae to see the complex cavern clearly.
He waited in place for a moment, hoping that with some luck, he might be able to wait for a beauty to fall from the sky, preferably two, and drenched to boot.
Unfortunately, his luck was quite ordinary, and after half an hour, he saw no sign of anyone.
"They must have gone down another path..."
"Even better, given how much time has passed, the paths that needed walking, others have already walked for me."
Wayne waded forward, the water reaching over his knees, providing great resistance and making the footing slippery. He accelerated his pace by using his Super Vision and keen sense of smell, and before long, he caught the scent of Kell.
Of all the people, Wayne had the highest hopes for Kell, and so, when he found the scent led to a cliff’s edge that plunged into the abyss, he was rendered speechless.
Wayne didn’t believe that Kell had just perished like that, and surmised that the water had carried away the other’s clothes.
Lacking an important person to guide him, Wayne had to rely on himself. He first returned the way he came, then continued along a spacious cave. Two minutes later, his feet were no longer on wet, slippery ground but on flat, rocky terrain.
After walking several hundred steps, the path ahead opened up. The air was filled with dry heat, and the walls around him grew darker in color, the dark red as if soaked in blood.
The closer to the center he got, the deeper the blood color became, and the air grew hotter.
Wayne sniffed and stopped, waiting in silence.
Marina appeared, holding a submachine gun. Her long hair, usually pinned behind her head, was now disheveled by the water and hung half-dry over her shoulders. Her long dress had been torn into a short one, revealing two long legs tensed and ready, allowing her to move freely in the cramped environment.
Seeing Wayne alone, Marina slightly furrowed her brows and asked, "Detective Wayne, where is Detective Kell, who usually sticks close by you?"
"I don’t know, we’ve lost contact."
"That’s unfortunate. I was hoping you two would continue to help!"
"Isn’t that the truth!"
Wayne and Marina were not familiar with each other and struggled to find common topics to discuss. They chatted sporadically, always keeping a certain distance between them. Gradually, the sound of footsteps increased around them.
Over a dozen armed soldiers surrounded them, aiming their guns at Wayne without a word.
The atmosphere grew heavy, the dry heat in the air becoming more oppressive, making even breathing hurried.
Wayne sighed, "Madam Marina, the adventure has just begun; we haven’t even seen the treasure yet. Is there a need to rush into a confrontation with each other?"
But you need the strength to see the treasure, don’t you?
The two detectives who came from Lundan, Kell had proved himself a powerful Mage, but Wayne had not; he had only demonstrated the professional diligence of a detective, cautious and careful not to make major mistakes.
The river had been crossed; it was time to burn the bridge.
Marina’s face was cold as she taunted, "Detective Wayne, I’m waiting for teammates, what are you waiting for, Detective Kell?"
"No, I’m waiting for the flowers to bloom."
Wayne’s voice turned cold, and a gust of hot wind blew across everyone.
