Chapter 1261: Chapter 427 Goddess, Master, Mother
Seeing the local warmly present the woman to him, Wayne was momentarily tongue-tied.
One must know their own worth, and he understood all too clearly what would become of the Goddess of Death’s consciousness in his grasp.
Feeling a flicker of hesitation, he wanted to advise Rone not to push his goddess into the fire pit.
Noticing Wayne lowering his head and remaining silent, Rone’s smile grew brighter and more assured. He remarked approvingly, "Although your tactics are dirty, your methods questionable, I know what kind of person you truly are. For the goddess, you’re willing to plunge into the abyss of hell, endure defamation, suffer humiliation, and even become more devilish than a devil itself. The goddess didn’t misjudge you; you’re an excellent knight."
"Having a successor like you is my great honor!"
"..."
Wayne looked bewildered. In this place, apart from Rone and himself, there wasn’t a third Death Knight.
So, Rone was speaking to him.
Indeed, he was this kind of person!
It’d be great to have Hexuno here to hear this, to witness what’s truly objective opinion. Though Rone might lack discerning eyes, he was an old-hand who judged people with accuracy—he had pinned everything down perfectly.
"If I weren’t lacking in strength, if the Divine Nation hadn’t fallen, if the goddess didn’t lack the time to wait for me to grow further, would I have become so unbearable? As things stand, I’ve all but forgotten the spirit of knighthood."
Wayne sighed heavily and chuckled bitterly, "Rone, my actions have brought shame upon you, my elder."
"No, I’m immensely proud of you!"
Rone, despite his slight lack of discerning capability, offered factual and impartial judgment on Wayne’s tactical mastery—achieving maximum victories with minimal costs. Compared to Wayne, he was merely a brute lacking wits.
If there were three versions of Sky Knight, who wouldn’t want to become a hero?
Wayne felt a twinge of envy. If it weren’t for his limited strength, how could he not wish to be a brute capable of hurling boulders with colossal force?
Just look at Bateman—ever since he sat on that chair, he hasn’t had to use his brain!
By the same token, a superman equipped with a superbrain could be unbelievably foolish.
Rone kept praising Wayne to the point that Wayne began feeling a little embarrassed.
One doesn’t hit someone who’s all smiles. Dismounting from his horse, he ceased his casual arrogance, tore off the Minotaur mask from his face, rediscovered his true nature, and reverted back to an upright and noble Pure Love War God.
"Rone, enough of that. I believe the goddess is still better off staying with you. I already possess part of her, and in case of emergencies, we shouldn’t put all the eggs in one basket," Wayne said with a serious expression.
Truly, he wasn’t the right candidate. He understood himself too well—if Rone dared to offer it, he would dare to reach out and seize it.
When the history teacher with the long black hair, stockings, and red-and-black heels awakens, nine times out of ten, she’d strangle Rone with her own hands.
"Wayne, say no more. Whatever you’re thinking, I already understand," Rone replied.
"Huh?!"
"You plan to accompany me to Hades and rescue the goddess together, don’t you?"
"..."
Apologies, that thought never crossed my mind!
"See, I guessed it completely," Rone said, smiling. "As fellow Death Knights, I know what you’re thinking; your thoughts are just like mine, utterly transparent."
Alright, as long as you’re happy.
Wayne sighed, "You’re absolutely right. Not a single detail eluded you."
"But I refuse!"
Rone stated firmly, "The three Subsidiary Gods—Observer, Judge, Executioner—have all betrayed the goddess. Your strength, though formidable, hasn’t reached the realm of contending with them. You should stay in the Mortal World to look after the goddess, while I head for the Divine Nation—it’s a safer option."
"Wait a moment. The Divine Nation still holds part of the goddess’s consciousness, doesn’t it?"
"Yes," Rone confessed, revealing everything to his comrade. "The Divine Nation contains the most powerful part of the goddess’s consciousness. The rest is scattered, though I don’t know the exact number. Currently, I’ve only identified three portions."
At this, Rone wielded Shadowmare to escort Yuliya out of the death-aura-filled gray zone.
Wayne’s brow furrowed, "Yuliya also harbors the goddess’s consciousness?"
"Indeed."
"She’s a creation of the goddess, as am I."
Rone explained that, differing from other God-chosen Knights, Death Knight Rone was personally forged by the Goddess of Death. The goddess wasn’t only his faith but also his master and could even be seen as his mother.
This was the source of Rone’s immense power—he required no cultivation, no resonance with Shadowmare to complete a demigod evolution. He was born with unparalleled strength.
This power rendered him capable of standing against Subsidiary Gods!
"Hssssssss—"
Wayne drew a sharp breath. So Rone’s state as a Death Knight was like skin, while Rone’s original self was naturally this lifeless form.
"The three Subsidiary Gods are incomparably powerful. I imagine reclaiming the goddess won’t be easy. To prevent the goddess within me from being taken by them, I must entrust it to you. You must remain in the Mortal World and never step into Hades."
Rone spoke gravely, "Furthermore, under no circumstances should you enter the Nature Goddess’s line of sight. We still haven’t determined who persuaded the Subsidiary Gods to betray the goddess, but I suspect the Nature Goddess most strongly. Only she possesses this capability."
"Of course it’s her. She wants to change her title from Nature to Life, becoming the second Heavenly Father," Wayne nodded in acknowledgment.
"You’ve investigated this as well?"
"Yes, after all, I am a Death Knight. I’ve made some guesses about the Divine Nation’s situation, combined with intelligence from the Holy Maiden, I’ve barely pieced together a fragment of the truth," Wayne replied.
"If that’s the case, I’ll say no more."
Rone took several steps forward and solemnly handed a ball of gray mist to Wayne. "Wayne, can I trust you?"
"To be honest, I don’t think you can."
"No, you must accept it."
Rone gently shook his head, "If you don’t take it, given your loyalty to the goddess, you’ll surely find every means to step into Hades. Accepting it changes things—it will tie you down, just as it ties me down. You won’t carry the goddess into danger."
