Chapter 1125: Chapter 393 Even the Devil Calls it a Devil
First Research Institute.
Wayne, posing as Christian, paced back and forth in the office, looking impatient and restless.
On the office chair, Rolle who had been up all night, hugged his arms and nodded continuously.
Bang!
Wayne slapped the desk, startling Rolle to the ground.
"Gen... General, what’s wrong?"
"Has the report been sent up? Why haven’t I received a summons from the Führer yet?" Wayne glared with wide eyes.
Is it possible that you’re taking yourself too seriously?
"General, the Führer has to manage the entire nation, from the frontlines to civilian life. He signs hundreds of documents every day; you just need to wait patiently."
Rolle was utterly helpless: "Also, don’t you plan to go home and rest? If the Führer summons you and you’re not in good spirits, it might leave a very bad impression."
"Fine, I’ll go home and sleep. Now that you mention it, I really am a bit tired." Wayne nodded.
In the corridor, a series of orderly boot steps resounded, and two soldiers dressed in Party Guard Corps uniforms opened the door, followed by an officer.
"Captain Christian?"
"I am here."
Wayne took two steps forward, frowning: "Allow me to correct you—it’s District Captain, not Brigade Captain."
"No, it is now."
The officer waved his hand, and the soldiers presented a set of documents and a brand-new uniform: "Congratulations, Brigade Captain Christian, the Führer is very pleased with your progress. This is your well-deserved award."
Wayne accepted the appointment, signed it, and handed it back, standing erect with his right arm raised to a forty-five-degree angle, declaring loyally: "Long live the Führer!"
Snap!
A uniform salute sounded.
"Heil!"xN
After confirming the slogan, they were one of us.
The officer placed a classified file box in Wayne’s hands, pointing to the two soldiers: "From now on, they will be your guards, protecting you closely. Destroy the documents in the file box immediately after reading."
Having spoken, the officer turned and left promptly...
Giving Wayne a strange feeling, as if the officer wasn’t human, more like a robot, which was unsettling to observe for too long.
Not just the officer, but the two nondescript guards as well, gave him a sense of inhumanity.
Wayne pressed down his suspicions and found a private office, opening the file box to review its contents.
One document was a work appointment, instructing him to immediately take over a job at a welfare institution without specifying the content—when you arrive, you naturally will know.
Another document was a letter of recommendation; after his promotion and pay raise, he was required to undergo six months of further training.
Without a summons from the Führer, loyalty is the best reward for loyalty. If you want to advance, leadership will make sure you have endless work.
"Welfare institution..."
Wayne frowned; he had thought that through Christian’s identity, he could get an opportunity to approach Hiddel. However, that did not happen—his gunshot failed to leave a lasting impression on Hiddel.
And it made sense—as someone who frequented bars and gave countless speeches in his earlier years, Hiddel had no shortage of people blocking bullets for him.
For someone of average ability like Christian to become a District Captain of the Party Guard Corps was already a very humane gesture from Hiddel.
Without the chance for a summons, Wayne no longer insisted. Accompanied by the two guards, he took a car to the welfare institution.
He just wanted to see what sort of work it was!
...
Welfare Institution.
Wayne, looking at the dark Projection Space ahead, became upset and a bit panicky, worried it might be a projection from the Mirror Space.
"General!"
The person in charge of the welfare institution stepped forward, draped in a white robe of the Holy See, with a friendly smile on his fifty-year-old visage.
Wayne pulled out his work assignment, and it seemed the person in charge recognized him; he just glanced at it casually before handing it back: "General, it’s your first time at the welfare institution, and you might not be aware of its secrets. Let’s walk and talk..."
The familiar feeling came again; Wayne felt that there was something odd about this person in charge, something discordant, and it took him a while to identify the feeling as the Uncanny Valley Effect.
Officer, guards, person in charge—they all were not human.
"Uh, you can..."
"Just call me Paulo."
"Paulo, forgive my bluntness, but you seem... I don’t know how to describe it, there’s an indescribable sense of horror." Wayne probed.
"General, these are secrets, and I’m not authorized to answer you. If I’m not mistaken, you have a letter of recommendation in your hand. All the truth is in there. I hope you will have a pleasant experience," Paulo replied with a smile.
It’s terrifying when you don’t smile, terrifying when you do.
"Paulo, are you also a Devil?"
"No, I am higher than a Devil."
"..."
Hearing the other’s confident voice, Wayne did not object; instead, he began the handover process.
"General, from now on, you are in charge of this welfare institution. There are specialized laboratories and interrogation rooms here, and a special squad of soldiers at your disposal; they are very loyal."
Paulo handed a sidearm to Wayne, his expression grave: "Take this sidearm; they will unconditionally follow all your orders."
Seeing Wayne’s puzzled expression, Paulo said with a smile, "I’m not at liberty to share too much. The truth is all in the letter of recommendation; you will find out in time."
Damn this Enigma, be gone from Berlin!
Wayne took the sidearm, a very compact handgun. He wasn’t well-versed in firearms, but through Christian’s memory, confirmed it to be a Walther PPK.
Christian’s original sidearm was the famous Luger semi-automatic pistol, well-crafted and limited in production, hence very popular.
