Chapter 1043: Chapter 372: The Divine Oracle High Priest Huo Bing, The Pope Dies Suddenly, How Pleasing - 2

"Tubie, you didn’t come in person, you only sent your monkey, is this how you show respect to the Naturalist Knights?" Saina chuckled as she spoke.

"No no no, my presence is too conspicuous, it’s inconvenient for me to leave the Prophet Hall lightly, it would draw unnecessary attention," Tubie hurriedly explained.

Saina’s laugh grew even more scornful; the old man’s first choice was self-preservation, followed by cooperation.

Wayne, seeing through but not saying it, welcomed Tubie’s arrival and emphasized the Great Prophet’s transcendent status as an indispensable member of the team.

Nice words cost nothing. Extra words won’t hurt.

Before Wayne’s words had even finished, another dark figure leaped onto the deck from over the surface of the river.

Alex Lambert.

The older brother of Holy Maiden Dusa, serving as her escort at the Church headquarters, he was holding his sister, the Princess, in a bridal carry, only putting her down after boarding the ship.

The Holy Maiden must remain pure and must not come into close contact with men; obviously, her brother wasn’t included in that rule—no one else thought there was anything amiss.

It’s not the Lando Family, after all!

"Mister Wayne, we meet again."

The siblings both made their courtesies, showing their respect for the Naturalist Knight.

An office is still an office, this concept holds true across the world, transcending worlds; ignoring the term ’heir’, they treated Wayne as a true Naturalist Knight.

Wayne was the heir to the Naturalist Knights, known only to a few within the Church. Dusa, a marginalized Holy Maiden and a newcomer, was not originally privy to this secret. Saina disclosed it during their discussions, dispelling her doubts and making her willing to falsely convey Divine Decrees.

Nearly a year had passed since their last meeting, and at the Holy Maiden selection competition, Dusa was surprised that Wayne had become the heir to the Naturalist Knights in such a short time. His luck was just too good.

Compared to her, she put forth all her effort just to become a Holy Maiden, yet still a mere figurehead without any real power...

There’s no comparison; they simply aren’t comparable.

"Dusa, you’ve become more beautiful!"

Wayne cheerfully walked over with arms open. Dusa, smiling, did not step back; she was, after all, the Holy Maiden, convinced that Wayne would not dare to embrace her.

Wayne walked past Dusa, warmly hugging Alex: "You too, grown more handsome, almost catching up to me."

"You’re joking, with your looks and aura, I fear I can hardly catch up," Alex chuckled bitterly, his demeanor still as melancholic as ever.

The Holy Maiden Dusa took her seat, Alex standing behind his sister, acting the part of a bodyguard and protector, pretending the Holy Maiden was powerful.

The three of them knew the truth, though; if the Holy Maiden had real authority, her words carried weight, she would never venture into troublesome waters.

All four participants at the meeting had their demands.

Wayne wanted the Naturalism Church to end its cooperation with Prussia, to avoid the possibility of other churches entering the world war;

Wayne’s demands were Saina’s demands. For her faith, she was willing to give everything up, and after Wayne completely lifted his control over her, even the Pope became a target of hers, fulfilling her once dream;

Dusa’s demand was to become a true Holy Maiden, to cancel the election system that changed every twenty years, to have real power, to be able to voice her opinions at the upper levels;

The demand of the Great Prophet Tubie was simple: to refresh his favorability with the Naturalist Knights; it really wasn’t him playing dirty behind the scenes when his two students attacked Wayne.

Poor old Tubie, being a Great Prophet was a tough job, listening to the prophecies of the Subsidiary Gods and then conveying them to the Church’s high-ranking officials, fulfilling the demands of the Subsidiary Gods, or perhaps directing the Church’s course.

Because Pope Ludwig held great authority, both the Holy Maiden and the Great Prophet were suppressed to the point of suffocation. Tubie, unable to outmaneuver Ludwig in political intrigues, thought of escaping to the Divine Nation at the right time, watching as his two disciples were just about to become Legendary Mages, and the next moment, he was done for.

Not only was he finished, but the assassination of the Naturalist Knight heir was turned against them, and Tubie ended up with the blame.

Just thinking about it was a pain.

The four each expressed their demands, confirmed that their objectives aligned, and collaboration posed no problem; specific disputes over rights were also resolved through Saina’s concessions.

Then came the most crucial part.

Who would be the leader!

If it were a mere false conveyance of a Divine Decree, Tubie had often translated it himself before, unbothered even if caught.

Prophecies were inherently ambiguous—you could argue that it was meant well, but executed poorly in his hands; he’d throw off any blame, saying if you can do better, then step up, otherwise don’t babble.

Prophecies are just like that, and there’s nothing you could do to him.

Previous Holy Maidens also frequently misinterpreted Divine Decrees; taking Flora for example, when she was controlled by Ludwig, she often bore the brunt of blame, and for her non-compliance, she was demoted to Gardener after her term, a significant fall in status.

Dusa, being new, perfectly understood her own limits; she lacked the boldness to falsely convey a Divine Decree herself, but she had the audacity to use it as a pretext to harvest benefits.

Knowing her limits, aware that she was powerless and could be discarded at any moment, she needed a leader to front the charge.

If things fell apart, she could claim the leader forced her to falsely convey the Divine Decree.

The room fell silent, no one spoke.

Saina wanted to say she didn’t mind being the leader; she brought the Naturalist Knight, joined hands with the Great Prophet, and the Holy Maiden to falsely convey Divine Decrees. She would take the blame; if something went wrong, she alone would bear it.

Before she could speak, Wayne gave her a sharp look.

He slowly said, "Great Prophet, Holy Maiden, the future Pope, the three of you are equals, there’s no hierarchy among you. Whoever becomes the leader, the other two will be displeased."

Look at you, forgetting the noble you are—there’s also a Naturalist Knight!"

"The leader bears the greatest risk, but also reaps the most benefits if successful, thus unsettling the recently established balance of power."
