Chapter 58: No Progress
Chapter 58: No Progress
Another six hours had passed and still nothing.
Kai had tried his best to look beyond the stone’s scope. But nothing was working.
He had tried to call out to the moonlight as best as he could, but nothing was happening. There was no magical phenomenon like with the old man.
That’s why knowing that there was only half a day left, Kai went to knock on the man’s door. He was the only one who could help him understand this skill.
-Knock!
-Knock!
The door was swung wide opened.
"Hm... what do you need?"
The man looked half asleep barely paying attention to his surroundings. Kai was sure of it, he had woken up from a pretty long nap.
"I need help to understand the skill."
The man laughed in his face.
"Who doesn’t? Give me a precise question, one that I can answer with words."
Kai thought for a moment before opening his mouth once more, having a question in mind.
"Can you explain how you absorbed the moonlight and became young for a short moment. How did you infuse that energy within yourself? I’ve been trying as much as I can. But nothing... nothing works."
The man shook his head. "Have you not been paying attention to what I have been saying?"
Kai frowned.
"I told you. I didn’t absorb the moonlight. It was similar yet not the same. That’s what you should have been thinking about before doing nonsense for the past six hours. You lost your time acting without thinking. This skill is not one you can learn by luck. You need to spend more time in there." He pointed at his head. "Then with your physical abilities."
Kai shook his head. "Then if you weren’t absorbing it, what were you doing? You literally became a teenager under the moonlight."
The old man sighed again. "Just how stupid are you. Youth is only one of the powers that can be given by the moonlight. It is you," He pushed his cane against Kai’s small dragonic chest. "Who decides what kind of power you wish for. It can answer to all your little desires. That’s why it’s so powerful. Stop trying to mimic what I’ve done. You need to do it for yourself. That’s the only way where you will succeed."
’It can answer to all my little desires?’ Kai thought with a slight frown, unsure if it actually could.
Could the moonlight change his appearance if he so wished for it?
Kai didn’t believe it.
The system had shown just how difficult it would be for him to turn into a human permanently. The requirements were so high that Kai didn’t think this skill could realize his desires.
"What is it you desire?" The old man asked as he saw Kai’s conflicted look etched onto his face.
Kai didn’t see any reason not to reveal his dream, so he went ahead and told the man.
"To become a human. To be able to live as human along with others."
"Hm... so you want for your appearance to change? I’m sure you saw that was possible with me. So why are you already giving up?"
"What are you talking about?"
The man laughed in Kai’s face. "It’s written all over you. There’s not an ounce of hope that this skill will actually help you. And that’s why you’ll never succeed. You don’t believe that you can learn this skill. You’ve given up. You’re no longer the resilient dragon that I helped a few hours ago."
Kai was about to open his mouth. However, the old man continued talking.
"I don’t care about your excuses. The moonlight isn’t something that you can absorb. It is something you must embrace. Don’t try to control it, don’t try to manipulate it. If you start behaving like this, then you will fail. And this is something that you must realize with all energies. Your monster energy is the same. It doesn’t like to be controlled. It simply cannot tell you that."
"You must become one instead of you being in control and using the energy surrounding you as a mere tool. Once you realize that, you will become much stronger. That I can promise."
Kai listened to the wise words and wasn’t sure what to think. He didn’t know how to embrace energy. All he had done since he had came into this world was use the Monster Energy in his core as he wished, using it for skills. He never tried to embrace it since it’s an energy.
Why should an energy be embraced?
It made no sense to Kai right now.
However, if this man, someone very powerful and ancient was saying it. Then, it had to be true.
There was no reason for him to lie. He was stuck here no matter what. He had said it himself.
"And how do you suggest that I start embracing the energy inside and outside me?"
"That’s something for you to figure, little one."
The door was about to closed as Kai pushed it open more.
"Can I just ask you one last thing?"
The man nodded, indicating that he could.
"Just who were you back when you weren’t in here? How powerful are you?"
The man didn’t laugh nor did he answer right away. He spent a few seconds frozen in place, thinking.
It was clear that he was hesitating about his answer.
"Hm... powerful? I don’t think I’m very powerful. Before I probably was, but now, things have most likely changed. If I were to come out in the world with my current strength, I wouldn’t last long."
Then, another sigh left his mouth.
"As for who I was? Well, I was someone important who decided to help a friend a long time ago. That’s all."
"What was your role?" Kai asked.
He didn’t half assed answers.
"Why do you want to know?"
"Because I want to know why I should listen to you."
"Hm... valid reason. I’ll tell you. I was the one in charge of all the history documents. I was the one in charge of the knowledge of thousands of years. I was the one in charge to keep it safe and protect it from others."
He looked pensive.
"I can only imagine what those bastards have done to those documents now..."
Then, the man locked his gaze with Kai’s.
"Can you promise me one thing, little one?"
Kai frowned slightly.
"Depends what it is."
"Haha! You really are like him." The man shook his head. "Promise me that you will restore the truth for the whole world to see. That’s all I want."
Kai wasn’t sure what this guy meant by restoring the truth. However, Kai didn’t see problems in doing that.
"Sure, I’ll restore the truth. Though, in the meantime, I should probably learn this skill. Or, at least, a part of it."
