Chapter 43: Causing Trouble Even After Death

"I am... no one."

Kai could not see the man’s face, but he was convinced that if he were to remove this mask from his face, he would see a grin plastered on that face.

"Then, why are you here... observing us?"

"I was passing by and saw you. I wondered why a Nocturne Dragon was roaming aimlessly in the woods. After all, it’s quite rare to see one of your species. Though..." the man moved his head up and down, "it seems like you aren’t really a Nocturne Dragon. You’re something even more interesting."

Kai didn’t like the words used by this man. From the way he spoke, it seemed as if he wanted to control or, even worse, capture them so that he could study them.

"How powerful are you?" Kai asked.

Kai’s goal was simple. He wanted to figure out the strength of the being before him as fast as possible. However, he knew that the more he asked, the more danger he was in. Nevertheless, he still went ahead and continued.

"Power is relative. I’m not very strong, nor am I weak. Though, as I said before, I am no one. My existence does not matter."

Kai frowned.

He tried his hardest to figure out the goals of the man before him. But no matter how hard he tried, nothing came to mind. Maybe it really was how he said; maybe he really was passing by without any goals in mind. Still, Kai doubted it.

It simply looked... too good to be true.

"And why are you in this realm?"

This time, Isla was the one who asked this question.

"I heard some interesting things were happening in this realm. I simply wanted to confirm them."

"And have you?"

The man rubbed his chin. "I think so. Hard to say, really."

Kai shook his head.

The more this man spoke, the more confused he became. Nothing made sense about this unknown being. He said things that just made them even more confused.

"Who are you?" Isla asked again, not believing this whole "no one" narrative. This man was clearly hiding some key information. She needed to figure out what it was.

The man giggled. "I told you this already. I am... no one."

"Bullshit," Isla spouted. "You’re strong, very strong. Are you working for the Order?"

The man shrugged. "The Order? I don’t know; I’m not really a fan of those guys. Though, maybe I do work for them. After all, being under their orders makes life a lot easier."

Isla was now in the same situation as Kai. She couldn’t figure out this man. He truly didn’t seem to have the slightest goal in life.

"Then, why are you talking with us? What’s your goal from this discussion?"

"To learn more about you two. You could become quite strong in the future, I assume. A fairy and a monster that can evolve endlessly—you two make quite the pair and, if left alone... you guys could surely cause some damage to the Order." He took a small pause. "Who knows? Maybe you two will be the ones who will finally overtake that organization... That would be quite the spectacle, wouldn’t it?"

"Now, why would we go against the Order?"

The man laughed louder this time. "I don’t know... to take revenge, perhaps?"

Kai and Isla narrowed their eyes.

This man clearly knew a lot more than he was letting them know. He knew something about them; he clearly did. However, because of his clothes, Isla could not tell anything about this man. Maybe he was also from Varkul’s era, even if those beings were rare at this point in time.

"Hey, why the angry gazes? Don’t worry, I’ll keep my mouth shut about you two. The last few years have been pretty boring; I’m just looking for some fun."

"How many years are we talking here?" Kai asked.

"Eh... a few hundreds? Who knows? I lost count a long time ago."

The man suddenly took a step forward toward Kai and placed his hand on his chest.

[You have been marked by an unknown being.]

"What did you just do?" Kai asked because of the system notice.

"Don’t worry, young dragon. This is just to keep an eye on you. If you are ever in danger, I will also know about it." The man then turned around and waved his hand dismissively. "Anyways, it was nice talking to you two. See you soon."

He then disappeared in the blink of an eye.

’Isla. Any idea who this man was?’

’No. However, he knows. He knows about you and your relationship with Varkul. He even knows about me. Now, the question is... who does this man work for?’

***

While Kai and Isla were panicking, trying to figure out who this man was, the man covered in black clothes was leaving their area with a slight smile on his face.

"Varkul..." He shook his head slightly. "Was this your last-ditch effort? Was this what you were working on when you disappeared for years... running away from your death?"

When the man had placed his hand on Kai’s chest, he had analyzed his core a little. However, he hadn’t been able to comprehend anything whatsoever. This core was far too complex for anyone of this world to ever comprehend. It was even a mystery how this was made in the first place.

"A monster that can indefinitely evolve. Not a bad plan, I must say." The man continued to shake his head. "However, I doubt one individual will be able to defeat them. For this plan to succeed, this young dragon will need a lot more help."

The man suddenly laughed. "Still, it seems like Lady Myre is already on their side. If this trend continues, maybe they really will succeed. After all, not everyone was in favor back then... some still wish for his return. Still, it will take a long time for them to become powerful enough to even try to take down the Order."

"Ugh, why did Myre have to kill Shing. Now, I’m stuck with taking care of this shitty realm."
