Chapter 427: Chapter 425 Street Fighting
Mekefa and Moses exchanged a glance before leaping from the Clock Tower in two different directions, planning to assist the vanguard of the army in locating the enemy.
The former landed on a street that had just been attacked. The thick smoke from the explosion had yet to disperse, and several bodies of Alliance Army soldiers were strewn about, while the injured groaned incessantly nearby. In the middle of the street, there was a crater about two meters in diameter, with the surrounding bricks and stones shattered by the blast, an aftereffect that didn’t quite seem like the result of cannon fire.
Could it be a buried explosive charge? But that seemed unlikely...
Usually, the streets were bustling with people, and any public digging would have certainly attracted a lot of attention from passersby. He had not noticed anything like this in his reconnaissance of the north these past days.
Moreover, triggering the explosives would necessitate a suicide bomber, but not a single enemy soldier could be seen nearby.
"Lord Divine Sword has arrived!"
The moment they saw Mekefa, the soldiers, dazed by the explosion, felt a surge in morale. They regrouped, formed a defensive formation on the spot, and began to tend to their wounded comrades.
"Have you noticed anything unusual?"
"Nothing... sir," the soldiers replied in unison, "I heard someone shout ’watch out,’ followed by a violent explosion. No enemy was found nearby, and there was no whistling sound of shells falling from the sky."
Even enhanced by Divine Power, the capabilities of these men were still pitiful. Mekefa sighed inwardly, knowing he couldn’t rely on them anymore.
With heightened alertness, Blooming Excalibur carefully observed every detail of the surrounding environment... The houses lining the street had long ago shut their doors and windows; the local residents clearly did not want to be involved in the war. However, even so, the successive explosions had shattered most of the glass, turning them into gaping black voids.
The sounds of explosions could still be heard not far away, with the faint cries of the wounded interspersed, but there was no sign of any precursors between the two explosions. In other words, the Longjiu Army was not attacking by drawing near to them. Furthermore, the soldiers mentioned that a warning had been issued before they were killed by the blast, indicating that the attack was not invisible, just that it was so faint that only those at the very front could perceive the abnormality.
Just then, Mekefa suddenly heard a very faint crackling sound.
It was the light noise of something crushing broken glass, almost imperceptible in such a battlefield environment, like the sound of a mosquito passing by...
He quickly turned his head to look toward the source of the sound.
There, a gray-brown "Six-legged Spider" emerged from a broken window on the side of the street and charged straight for the Alliance Army the moment it touched the ground!
The distance between them was no more than three or four meters!
Even Mekefa did not have enough time to reach it.
But still having surpassed the limits of a warrior, in less than a second, Mekefa managed to bend down, draw the short dagger from his shoe heel, take aim, and throw it with his right hand—a series of motions as fluent as if he were releasing a bullet. The dagger struck the "Six-legged Spider" mid-crawl, the force of the impact shattering it completely, sending its parts scattering over ten meters before coming to rest.
Until that moment, the soldiers hadn’t even realized what had happened!
Mekefa dashed to where the strange object had fallen apart and picked up a piece for inspection, only to discover that it was actually a mechanical creature! Its internal gears were still spinning, driving the leg linkages to contract back and forth, while another half of the torso had a square protrusion, with white particles scattered all around it.
Was this... the enemy?
The Alliance Army was being brutally struck by something akin to a pet toy?
Suddenly, more crackling noises arose from all around.
At last, some soldiers noticed something was amiss.
"What the hell is that!?"
Mekefa scanned his surroundings and saw seven or eight mechanical spiders emerging from alleyways, sewer grates, and broken windows, rapidly sprinting towards the army—not only did they move fast, but their outer shells were colored to blend in with the city streets. They even used the shadows along the walls for camouflage, just like living creatures!
Even Mekefa couldn’t stop them all this time.
"Don’t let them get close to you!" he roared.
The soldiers, as if waking from a dream, raised their guns and fired. Blessed with divinity, they indeed exhibited greater accuracy, but ordinary bullets couldn’t pierce the steel shells of these "spiders." As a shower of sparks flew from ricocheting bullets, a spider burrowed into their ranks and exploded violently, tossing soldiers’ limbs onto the rooftops three stories high!
Something was amiss!
The enemy of the Alliance Army... were actually miniature mechanical housekeepers?
When had Gao Feng Industrial Company concocted such a thing?
And how many more were there!?
As Mekefa frantically destroyed the Self-Destruct Spiders and ordered the troops to temporarily retreat from the district, an endless stream of spiders began to appear. They didn’t merely come from the front anymore; more of them popped up from behind as well. Without needing to worry about casualties like humans, they only needed to get within five meters of the Alliance Army to cause significant damage with their explosions. Comparatively, in their haste to seize the Northern City District quickly, the Alliance Army had to march in multiple columns, making it difficult to watch their front and rear simultaneously. As the enemy’s assault intensified, the scattered troops were completely disoriented, unsure of which direction to head.
But that wasn’t the end of it.
After enduring the bombardment for over ten minutes, Mekefa finally saw the ace of the Longjiu Army—the Steam Armored Knights.
These steel warriors stepped heavily into the battlefield from the western streets. Spaced a hundred meters apart, they began firing at the Alliance Army, and bullets flying wildly kicked up dust and smoke in the streets.
At the sight of these iron clumps, the Blooming Excalibur actually breathed a sigh of relief. Regardless, once the enemy showed itself, what was tested in the fight was the raw power of each side... and the Alliance Army did indeed need a bit of a morale boost from a victory.
He took a deep breath and once more transformed his hand into a sword, weaving through the dense barrage, heading straight for the enemy’s trump card troops.
Once, these seemingly invulnerable iron clumps could breach the Kingdom Army’s defenses with just one charge. Now, the tables were turned; he would show all the soldiers of the Alliance Army that he could just as easily penetrate through the Steel Knights’ lines.
Not even thick armor could withstand the slash of a flaming sword!
Mekefa moved as if swimming through the air, leaping from the buildings lining the street to land above the knights. His right hand’s Miracle Construct Ring grew hot and scorching. As he swung his hand, a torrent of flame like a long knife slashed across the shoulder of a knight! The blade of fire continued unabated, melting into the armor and cutting out again from the waist, and flames surged from inside the helmet!
But to Mekefa’s shock, the knight did not die immediately. Instead, he reached out to grab Mekefa, seemingly intent on dragging him down together!
How was this possible? Even if the sword didn’t sever the enemy’s body, the high temperature alone should have been enough to cook him alive. How could he still have the strength for a counterattack?
Of course... such slow movements posed no threat to the Blooming Excalibur. With a backward leap, he easily dodged the desperate embrace.
Just then, as the flaming armor pieces fell, the true form of the Steel Knight was revealed... there was no sign of a person inside, but rather a mass of mechanical parts. The cut had ignited the lubricant, causing the knight’s entire chest cavity to burn fiercely, the eyes glowing red. Gazing at the burning undead iron figure, Mekefa felt a chill he hadn’t experienced in a long time.
A dreadful thought couldn’t help but surface in his mind.
Perhaps from this moment on, the Alliance Army would no longer be able to kill a single Longjiu soldier.
