Chapter 370: Chapter 271: Still Encountered a Strange Scene_2

Zhao Rong rose to his feet, pausing slightly, and after a moment’s thought, he rolled up the tabloid he had finished reading, gripped it in his hand, and took it with him.

Since he had finished reading it anyway, and his visit to Yilan Pavilion was on the way, it made sense to return it to the library first, and exchange it for another book while he was there.

In the early morning, Zhao Rong was in good spirits, feeling that everything was going his way, apart from having been busy for so many days, he managed to drink a cup of well water to start pulsing, bringing him one step closer to ’suppressing’ his lady in Fu Yao Realm.

There was another reason.

That was the day of rest that came every ten days was approaching again.

Zhao Rong stepped out with a light heart, taking advantage of the fact that Teng Ying hadn’t gotten up early, and ’stole’ some fresh vegetables and fruits, mixed with morning dew and dawn light, savoring them as he made his way to Yilan Pavilion...

The days of autumn were somewhat short, and when Zhao Rong left the house the sky was just getting light, now as he arrived at the outside of Yilan Pavilion, the sun was almost climbing to mid-sky, illuminating the world.

Zhao Rong glanced at the neatly posted familiar couplet on the gate of the courtyard and quieted down for a while.

He seemed to think of something, chuckled, and shook his head.

He raised his hand.

Knock, knock, knock————

The sound of knocking broke the tranquility of the quiet courtyard, the most flourishing place for orchids, in the early morning.

Then it was silent.

After that, footsteps could be heard, starting from afar, gradually getting louder, moving from leisurely to hurried, and at last, the footsteps seemed to halt abruptly near the threshold, just beyond the door.

Creak——

"Who is it?"

Along with the sound of the door opening, a somewhat familiar girl’s crisp voice followed.

Zhao Rong hid his hands in his sleeves and looked down.

He saw the courtyard door was being pulled open from the inside, revealing a little head wearing a blue-clothed Attendant Student’s hat. At the moment, however, the blue-clothed girl’s outfit was somewhat strange, with the hat, too wide in comparison with her small head, askew to one side, one hand gripping the right doorknob, the other clutching a small iron shovel, still with wet black soil attached to it.

If she could produce an expression of a fierce and sinister villain, along with this getup, she’d likely pass for a bandit ready to rob passersby...

"...Eh..."

At the moment, it seemed she had clearly recognized him, her visitor in the early hours. Her little mouth stayed slightly open, her actions froze, and the words emerging from her lips gradually softened.

"Who, who are you looking for?"

Jing Zi’s eyes were slightly open, her back leg instinctively stepped back, and following Zhao Rong’s gaze down to the flower shovel she was holding, she quickly hid the shovel behind her with a swift motion, batting her eyes at him.

Zhao Rong’s mouth twitched slightly.

Who is he looking for?

Obviously, it was your Teacher; it couldn’t possibly be for you, a little girl.

He spoke softly, "Good morning, Miss. May I ask if Teacher Zhu is in? I had made a prior arrangement with her, and I’ve come to visit today."

"Oh yes, she is," Jing Zi’s expression became solemn, nodding her head as if pounding garlic, "Sir... please follow me."

Her mood, just like her expression, was somewhat uneasy. Without much thought, she stepped aside to make way, and after Zhao Rong entered, she closed the door, hiding the little flower shovel behind her back and scurried ahead of Zhao Rong to lead the way.

The two walked towards the depths of the courtyard.

The scent of flowers grew stronger.

Yet the sight of the short-statured blue-clothed girl and the tall and lean Confucian Scholar walking one after the other, in silence, left the space between them momentarily void of conversation.

Thus, the atmosphere was slightly awkward.

But it made sense, considering that if it wasn’t for the altercation outside the Academy that day, the two of them wouldn’t have much to talk about and probably wouldn’t have crossed paths—so was it true that conflict brings people closer?

After all, what could a little sprite of a girl appreciate in the good looks of a Human Clan man...

As Zhao Rong’s thoughts wandered, he followed Jing Zi straight through the garden where he had seen Zhu Weirui writing when he visited her last time.

The two turned onto a path surrounded by flowers.

Zhao Rong looked around with curiosity, admiring the secluded paths, the sound of trickling water, and the distant, delicately constructed buildings peeking through the foliage.

Perhaps sensing his confusion, or maybe feeling that the atmosphere was indeed a tad awkward,

Jing Zi glanced over the orchids lining both sides of the path as she casually murmured softly, "Teacher is writing in the study, just a bit ahead."

Zhao Rong responded with a smile, "I see."

Soon after, the two reached the end of the flower path. Jing Zi’s brows suddenly knitted, and she halted, stepping off the path to approach a small cluster of orchids by the roadside.

Zhao Rong also stopped and looked over.

The blue-clothed girl walked up to several orchids that looked rather morose, crouched down, took the flower shovel in her hand and carefully stirred the soil, loosening it. She stared at the ground beneath the orchids, her lips pursed in silence.

After a short while, Jing Zi exhaled gently, put away the flower shovel, stood up and returned to the path. Without looking at Zhao Rong, she lowered her head slightly and continued forward, "Sorry for the wait, Sir. Please follow me."

Zhao Rong glanced at her and then at the orchids, "No problem."

The two carried on, but as they passed several clusters of wilting flowers, Jing Zi’s steps would slow slightly every time. However, she did not stop again; instead, she quickened her pace, focusing on leading the way for Zhao Rong. The little girl’s brows were furrowed, her eyes scanning around, as if contemplating something.

Zhao Rong had been observing all this from behind. As they passed another group of poorly growing orchids, he thought for a moment before speaking to the small figure leading the way.

"These are epiphytic roots... well, they need air to breathe, to be in contact with the air to thrive."

Jing Zi paused slightly but did not turn around. She nodded and moved her hands, which were hidden behind her, as if to show the flower shovel she held.

Zhao Rong looked around, "I reckon taking such pains to aerate the soil for each one isn’t the solution, the problem should be addressed at its root."
