Chapter 78: Pulse Rupture in action
BANG!
Riley walked towards the door, blasting it open with a swift kick.
The wooden double doors were immediately flung off their hinges, the force from the kick sending a slight shockwave across the room.
The interior was wide and adorned with different furniture, paintings, along some strange markings inscribed on the walls.
At the far end of the room was a large throne carved from wood and bone, its arms covered in red silk.
Seated atop it was a fat man with an enormous belly, draped in velvet robes that barely concealed the wads of fat on his stomach.
The moment his eyes landed on Riley, he gasped, his body stiffening in shock.
"H-hiiiek!" he exclaimed, his body shivering in terror.
Around the room stood roughly ten guards, four of them standing by the sides of the throne.
A few workers and attendants were present too, all of whom froze in stunned silence at Riley’s sudden intrusion.
No one moved.
Their gazes flicked between Riley and the two corpses outside the door. The blood trail was still visible.
"Wh-what effrontery!" the chief suddenly shrieked, his flabby finger pointing straight at him.
His voice cracked slightly. "K-kill him! KILL HIM!"
That shout snapped the guards out of their daze.
They charged towards Riley with roars, drawing swords, spears, and short-bladed axes.
However, Riley simply scoffed, watching as the guards rapidly neared him.
"Well, this is no way to welcome your village champion, is it?" he muttered, clicking his tongue.
He suddenly dashed towards them also, barely making a sound.
The speed at which he moved made it seem like he had teleported, and the guards staggered, thrown off by his sudden disappearance.
"Huh?!"
"Where did he—?!"
He had been in front of them one moment, and in the next, he was nowhere to be found.
"Behind—?"
Before they could even react—
Splurt!
One of them dropped to the floor with a loud thud, blood spraying from the gash across his throat.
Before the rest could even react, two more guards fell to the ground, their necks slashed open by Riley’s daggers.
With his high attributes and Epic-grade weapon, they never stood a chance against him—even if there were ten more of them.
He suddenly reappeared behind one of them, the red veins on his daggers glowing with power.
Without hesitating, he stabbed one of the daggers into the side of the man’s neck, sending a sharp shock through his body.
"G-guhk—!" the unfortunate guard grunted in pain, his body spasming and convulsing.
Foam poured out in waves from his mouth, and he soon dropped to the ground, shaking violently as someone struck him with a naked wire.
"W-what did he do to him!?" The other guards were shocked, watching as their comrade kept spasming violently for a few more seconds before his body finally went still.
Life was completely gone from his eyes, however, a little bit of foam kept pouring from his mouth.
Riley stood above him, watching with a slight smirk on his face.
’Pulse Rupture...’ he thought, the smirk on his face widening slightly. ’As expected of an Epic-grade weapon.
The veins had been stacking from the time he killed those two guards outside, and it finally reached the max after killing three more in the castle.
He then turned back to the other guards, who immediately shrank back in fear.
The confidence they had mere seconds ago had already been completely shattered after what just happened, and a few of them had started pondering whether to just run away.
However, Riley sided plan on giving them that luxury, as he suddenly vanished from his position once more, charging at the remaining seven.
All they could do was grunt and shout in confusion, as their bodies dropped dead to the ground like flies.
One more guard fell under the painful strike of Pulse Rupture, sending chills down the spine of the few left.
But then, they followed soon enough, their necks slit open under the cruel blade of Riley.
In less than ten seconds, it was over.
The floor was soaked red, the guards’ lifeless forms sprawled across it like broken dolls.
Blood trickled toward the throne, forming a thin stream that touched the tip of the chief’s boot.
"No..." the chief muttered in shock, his face completely drained of colour.
His massive belly quivered with each breath, buckets of sweat dripping down his forehead.
His lips quivered. "M-m-m-m..."
Riley suddenly reappeared in front of him, the sharp tip of his dagger resting just below his chin.
The man’s entire body jolted in terror, and he slowly looked up.
His gaze met with Riley’s, who was staring down at him with a cold expression.
Though he didn’t say anything, the chief found it extremely difficult to breathe, his body trembling more with each second.
He subconsciously glanced down at the dagger pointed at his neck, and felt another chill crawl down his spine at the sight of the slightly glowing red veins.
Though they weren’t thrumming as much as they did seconds ago, the mere sight of them was still terrifying.
Riley’s cold gaze didn’t waver.
But for a brief second, his eyes shifted above the chief’s head, where a few translucent tabs hovered in the air.
[Novice Village Chief]
[Level: 16]
[H/P: 1300]
’Not exactly weak,’ Riley thought.
At least, not by the current standards of the game.
A level 16 boss in the village was supposed to be formidable. With over a thousand health, the only players at this point of the game who could take down the chief were he and Terry.
The rest could only try, but they would only be defeated. The only way they would even stand a chance was if they formed a party of well-experienced players to fight him, however, the chances would still be slim.
And yet... that same chief was trembling before him like a cornered rat, unable to even lift a finger.
Not because he was bound.
Not because he was injured.
But because of fear.
A thick, suffocating dread gripped every inch of his body, weighing down his limbs and clouding his mind.
The moment Riley’s dagger touched his skin, his will had crumbled completely.
And that fear was further amplified by [Fear-Monger], the second effect of Riley’s title—[Hungry Demon].
The effect was always active against those who had even the tiniest bit of fear against him, rendering them powerless before the fight even began.
The chief was no exception.
His breath came out in short, shaky bursts. His jaw kept trying to move, but it refused to open completely.
And it wasn’t just him.
The few remaining people in the room, such as his maids and other attendants were stood frozen also.
None dared to even run.
They couldn’t even if they tried, as their knees kept shaking, their legs glued to the ground.
Then, finally, the chief managed to speak.
"Wh-what do you w-want...?" he stammered, his voice barely louder than a squeak. "J-just ask... I’ll—I’ll give you anything. M-money... wom—"
He didn’t even finish the word.
Riley’s eyes narrowed, his tone cutting sharp through the air like a blade.
"What do you plan to do with Burus’ farm?"
The question was quiet... but it was deadly.
It hung in the air like an axe suspended above the chief’s neck.
He flinched, pupils shrinking as he tried to process what Riley had just asked. His mouth opened once—twice—but nothing came out.
"B-Burus...?" he weakly muttered, a bit taken aback by the question.
’C-could it be... that the idiot farmer sent him... to me?’ he thought, gnashing his teeth.
"Answer the question, and don’t try to dodge." Riley’s voice jolted him out of his daze, and his gaze jerked back up.
"F-fine... I’ll tell you, I’ll say it... the truth," he muttered, panting heavily.
"A few days ago, a man approached me... he said to..." the chief said, pausing for a second.
"Continue," Riley said, his eyes shining with curiosity.
"He didn’t give me a choice okay, I—ghhck!" The chief suddenly clutched his chest, spitting out black blood.
Riley’s eyes widened in shock, and he subconsciously shifted away from the man.
He didn’t understand what that black blood was, but he was sure it didn’t mean anything good.
The chief kept coughing, his body spasming uncontrollably as he fell from his seat.
"Help... me..." he muttered, subconsciously stretching a trembling hand at Riley.
However, the latter didn’t bother to come close, only watching from a distance.
’What... the hell is that?’ he thought, staring at the thick black blood oozing out from the man’s mouth.
The chief’s body kept spasming for a few more seconds, before stopping, life fully gone from his eyes.
The attendants around glanced at Riley, then back at their dead chief.
Many of them, especially the maids started sobbing softly, their bodies shaking in horror.
They thought Riley was the one who did that to their chief, however, Riley himself had no idea about what was going on.
Author’s Note: I edited a few things in Chapter 76, but you don’t necessarily have to go back and read it. While writing the Chapter, I forgot to include his dagger’s vein stacks activating, so I only included that. Thanks for all the support so far, I really appreciate it. You can also drop comments about what you feel about the story’s progression so far... whether it’s good or not. :)
