Chapter 71: He’s lost it...

Riley’s eyes shifted back to the floating notifications in front of him, each one blinking continuously.

A small red coin then materialised in front of him, slowly spinning in the air.

Riley raised a brow, grabbing the coin with one hand.

"Took you long enough," he muttered, staring at it for a few seconds, before turning it over.

It was smooth and perfectly round, no larger than a small button.

But etched on both sides was a detailed engraving of the Crimson Blood Scorpion’s long, thick tail, as well as the pitch black stinger at the tip.

The tail was curved along the edges of the coin, with a dim red mist slowly oozing from thr stinger.

The marking kept pulsing with a dim red light, proof that it was the real deal.

[Novice Champion Token (Rare)]

[Token given to the player who slays the notorious village boss. Take this token to the village chief to receive more rewards.]

A slight smirk tugged at the corner of his lips as he read through the description, and he quickly placed the coin in his storage ring.

Suddenly, two more items materialised beside him, before dropping on the huge dent on the monster boss’ head.

One of them was a blood red chest plate armour, and the other a long sword with black hilt, its blade concealed in a blood red sheath.

Riley stretched his hand at them, and both items vanished also, stored away in his ring with a thought.

Yano and Terry watched the entire thing in silence.

Yano’s hands twitched slightly at his sides, his staff still trembling faintly in his grasp. His eyes, however, were locked on Riley’s every action, wide with rage and envy.

’He’s taking it... he’s taking everything... everything that’s supposed to be mine!’ he thought, the grip around his staff tightening.

As if Riley could read his thoughts, he flashed a smirk at him, before jumping down from the corpse.

Thud!

He landed softly, boots hitting the earth without even stirring a pebble.

The moment he touched down, the players nearby flinched.

Some of them took an instinctive step back. A few others shuffled nervously, unsure whether to cheer, speak, or stay silent.

Nonetheless, Riley ignored them completely.

He rested a hand on the scorpion’s corpse behind him, tapping its side lightly.

Then he turned to face the crowd again, his gaze sweeping briefly across them before settling directly on the two people standing in the center.

"I’m taking this with me," he said. "You don’t have a problem with that... do you?"

He raised a single brow, but his attention seemed to be focused squarely on Yano in particular.

Like he was daring him to say or even do something.

Yano gnashed his teeth, his expression getting worse with each passing second. His knuckles turned white due to hard he was gripping his staff, veins bulging visibly across his neck and temples.

Terry, who was standing beside him quickly noticed his worsening countenance, and a sharp glint flashed across his eyes.

He parted his lips slightly, as though he wanted to say something—but no words came out.

Instead, he turned to the dark-haired figure still standing calmly beside the scorpion’s corpse.

"You killed the monster..." he said. "It’s only right you do whatever you want with it."

Though he spoke with a calm tone, he couldn’t help but feel a pang in his chest as he said it.

After all, he too had aimed to be the one who defeated the boss and led the players into the first city.

However, things didn’t always turn out the way one expected—that was one fact he had learnt to accept.

But Yano wasn’t nearly as calm.

"No!" he barked suddenly, voice sharp and fierce.

Everyone’s attention snapped to him.

"You can’t!" he snarled, pointing the tip of his red staff directly at Riley. "I planned a lot for this day... sacrificed much... I won’t just let you take it away from me!"

The players around gasped softly, some even stepping farther back.

Terry immediately turned to him, his face squeezing into a frown.

"Yano..." he said, placing a hand on the other boy’s shoulder, "Don’t do something stupid."

But Yano quickly shrugged his hand off, his glare burning hotter than ever.

"Don’t advise me," he hissed. "Coward wannabe hero."

Terry’s brows twitched, but he didn’t respond.

Yano stepped forward instead, his crooked smirk twisting wider with every step.

"I’m sure of it now..." he said, eyes flashing. "Whatever skill you used in killing that boss monster... it has a long cooldown, doesn’t it?"

Riley narrowed his eyes slightly in confusion.

’What the hell is he talking about?’

Yano caught the expression and grinned even wider, feeling that his theory was just confirmed.

"That’s why you’re just standing there, acting all calm and arrogant..." he continued. "You’re bluffing. You can’t use it again so soon, can you?"

Riley clicked his tongue, watching him carefully.

’He’s lost it...’

There wasn’t even a trace of common sense behind those eyes anymore, just raw obsession.

It seemed like losing his team to the Hungry Demon—which was actually him, just yesterday, then his plan to trap Terry and kill the monster boss failing had taken more of a toll on Yano than he’d expected.

After today, Riley was sure the Noble Lions Guild’s influence within would drop drastically, at least for a while.

However, he wasn’t sure whether that was supposed to be a good or bad thing.

In his past life, none of these had happened, but then, his actions within the game were changing a lot more things than he expected.

Nonetheless, he didn’t really have a choice, since he knew what kind of fate would befall the world if he let things happen like they were meant to.
