Chapter 42: The Spy.
Chapter 42: The Spy.
The sun edged itself over the horizon, threatening to rob light from the world itself, but the streets in the Capitol just began brimming with life and excitement. Shops closed, vendors packed their belongings and fled for fear of losing their merchandise.
While the pubs and bar opened in full swing, men rushed in packs as they told each other of their stories, the problems they encountered and the politics of the nation itself.
Amongst the clamor, three figures walked in silence, their heads lay down as they walked tiredly through the streets.
Shadow looked about, his feet were bruised from waking two days non stop, the frozen bundle in his arms had made them sore from carrying it all day. The other two girls didn’t fare much better but more than anything.
He has been on constant guard. Someone had been following them for the past two days. He wasn’t sure who they were or why. His guess was that they were from the cult itself and we’re tracking him down.
If that was the case then he had to confront the spy very soon, but not at the expense of Eryn and Liora.
’Just like that I have two women to take care of’ he sighed inwardly.
How did it even come to this?
"Hungryyyyy...." He heard a familiar voice call out to him. Obviously it was Liora’s. She looked like she was at Death’s door. The sight made Shadow crack a smile.he turned to look at Eryn, she seemed more composed.
"Fret not young Urchin. Soon we shall feast" he added. They faced forward and kept on at it. Soon enough, they arrived at the Silver Blade guild.
Shadow calming walked into the bar and headed straight towards the counter. The burly man up ahead spotted Shadow and flashed him a wide smile.
"Good Good. You made it back alive. I trust you finished the job Aye?" He hunched over the counter eyeing the bundle that Shadow held close to him, then eyed the two girls by his side.
"Who’s the new girl?" Ben asked, pointing at Eryn. Shadow turned towards the girls and nodded towards a nearby table, telling them to sit down while food came their way. Liora rushed to the nearest seat and waited eagerly while a maid offered her some juice to quench her thirst. Eryn followed her.
"I think we’re gonna have to keep this one private" Shadow hefted the bundle in his arms. Ben eyed it for a bit then gestured for Shadow to follow him.
With a sigh, Shadow followed the burly man behind the counter, a door was opened and Sharow followed after, before he passed, he saw two plates being served to both his women. He smiled and followed after Ben.
He was led into a private room, there were no windows or other entrances, if anything the places seemed suffocating. Shadow smiled, he could feel the presence of a barrier being put in place to prevent sound from escaping. Although he wasn’t sure how exactly they did it.
"Alright, tell me what you got" Ben asked eagerly.
Shadow dropped the bundle on the top before him and unwrapped what lay beneath.
A second passed.
Another passed.
A chair fell, Ben stood up and backed up against the wall. He looked at what was placed on his table, his face was white with shock.
"What the hell is that?" Ben asked, taking a few steps away from whatever it was on the table.
"Ooh calm down. It’s just a demon’s head. There’s nothing much to it " he sighed. He rested on the arms on the chair, feeling completely exhausted. He looked at the wine placed on the table and poured himself a bit and drank it happily.
Delicious!
"A... what?" Ben’s voice seemed unstable. If Shadow wasn’t so tired, he might have laughed as hard as he could but right now, he could only muster a smile.
"Mission accomplished I guess. But they didn’t make it" Shadow sighed. He tried his best to not feel so down, that he had defeated a demon and saved the lives of numerous other humans for the future to come.
"How did you? Where? When?" Ben seemed overwhelmed. It seemed as though he had never seen a demon till this very day. Granted Shadow guessed no one had seen a demon in the past hundred years.
"Calm down Ben. It’s really dead and frozen still" Shadow smiled slyly.
Ben took a step forward and another, out of curiosity, poked at the head as it rolled across the table and landed on the floor. The nice held strong keeping the head intact.
"See. Doesn’t bite" Shadow laughed.
"Well, sure your ass down, I’ll tell you everything that happened and I hope I get paid for this because God knows I nearly died for this" he cursed.
Over the next hour, Shadow took his time explaining everything that may have happened, he decided what to keep a secret about himself and told everything else about what had happened.
Ben listened eagerly, sometimes a shocked unbelievable expression crossed his face. Shadow believed that if he didn’t bring the demon’s head, Ben wouldn’t have believed a word he said.
By the time he was done, the Jug of wine was empty and Shadow had begun feeling like himself once more. He stretched and stood up.
"So? Do I get paid. And just to boot, I’m not dumb enough to tell anyone else about this. Just you and me with the girls know about this. I don’t know what else to do so I came to you" Shadow confessed. He truly didn’t know anyone else in power.
Ben finally heaved, his chest dropping as he sighed deeply, he looked at Shadow and stood up. "You did good my friend. You’ll get a handsome reward but your cooperation will be needed with the guild master if that’s fine?" Ben extended out a hand.
Shadow took it. "Naturally I intend to help..." Shadow noticed someone move, not in the room or in the building. The spy who had been following him had finally revealed himself in the courtyard.
"Hey Ben, I’ll be right back" Shadow said without a second to waste and melted into the shadows.
***
Ooh in the courtyard, a man could be seen walking I to the Guild, his weapon rested on his shoulder, he looked around suspiciously as if just noticing something.
"Looking for someone" Shadow asked as he emerged from the shadows cast by the wall.
