Chapter 776: Chapter 439: A Bunch of Newbies Have Emerged (6K)
After more than a month of preparation, which caused ripples throughout the entire Yunhui Great Domain, the academy-wide recruitment of Torchfire Academy officially began.
In the Yunhui Great Domain, Torchfire established recruitment selection venues in 64 Tier-One cities—that is, huge cities with access to Level 7 Oasis and above.
Of course, the Yunhui Great Domain has more than sixty-four Level 7 Oases, but capital cities like this generally do not open to outsiders, and Torchfire could not spare enough manpower to set up additional selection venues.
To facilitate the recruitment, Torchfire Academy spent a significant sum renting venue spaces... Little Illusion grumbled that expenditures had already exceeded income and they must make a profit in the subsequent phase.
Expenditures were not limited to venue rentals but also included preparation of materials and hiring of security.
Torchfire’s headquarters had only a few thousand official staff, with even fewer stationed at the academy; thus, at each selection venue, only three or four, perhaps six or seven people were arranged. These ’senior predecessors’ led a group of prospective and formal students to host the selection events, but still, manpower was insufficient, necessitating the hiring of reputable mercenary groups and bounty hunters to maintain order at the venue and to remain vigilant against potential disruptors.
After revealing its ’true power,’ it was implausible for the Seven Nations to oppose Torchfire Academy openly, and there was no need to do so in secret... They were more likely to adopt a wait-and-see approach, observing whether Torchfire would leave after a few years, and whether disasters related to the Evil God were truly increasing.
But the Seven Nations were vast, and their choice to observe did not mean that the myths and powerful within these nations lacked other intentions. Moreover, the powerful forces in the entire Yunhui Great Domain were not limited to the Seven Nations.
If unexpected situations or violent conflicts arose during recruitment selection, Torchfire Academy might well become the butt of jokes.
"This first academy-wide recruitment event must be flawless!"
...
Although called academy-wide recruitment, in reality, the coverage was limited to 64 Tier-One cities such as Torrent Port, Grandmap City, and Liusha Fortress, and even within those large cities, not everyone was aware of Torchfire Academy’s recruitment drive.
Only a few within the city had heard some news about it.
After all, the ’academy’s name’ was initially circulated only within High-Tier Awakener circles, and even though it had spread, it was hard to reach the ears of ordinary people.
Ordinary and impoverished people, even if they had heard of this event, would merely regard it as a distant rumor. In their eyes, the notion of leaping through the dragon’s gate was far too remote and ethereal. Only an extremely small number had the courage to risk it all in pursuit of dreams as illusory as soap bubbles.
Even for Awakeners, the majority did not wish to leave their homes behind; or to put it differently, at their core, they did not believe that they, scrambling in the mire like wild chickens, could become phoenixes.
"Pies don’t fall from the sky. This Torchfire Academy claims to recruit everyone, but without a doubt, I know that only those children of the privileged can pass the selection. For us poor folks, going there would mean nothing but humiliation, serving merely to highlight the so-called excellence of the wealthy geniuses."
"You’re right. Even assuming Torchfire Academy’s recruitment is fair and unbiased, how could we ever compete with those who have enjoyed superior resources since birth... After all, aren’t geniuses just made with money?"
"Only geniuses can enter Torchfire Academy, but without money, you can’t become a genius... Alas, it seems the world truly lacks such fairy-tale transformations."
"Rather than daydream about getting into Torchfire Academy, it’s better to consider whether my eldest son can manage to work for a great noble family. If we can find connections to get him in, that would already be like leaping through the dragon’s gate."
People’s ideologies do not always align, and the vast majority regarded Torchfire Academy’s global recruitment merely as a topic of casual conversation after meals. They might be envious, but it was merely envy.
Only a handful packed their bags and embarked on their journey two days before the recruitment day, heading for the vicinity of the selection venue.
These were the locals living in Tier-One cities.
In the surrounding oases outside the Tier-One cities, even fewer residents knew of this news, and they rarely had the means to traverse the wildlands to other cities.
However, even if only a very few were moved to action and arrived at the recruitment site, the assembled crowd of applicants was still massive.
Outside the venue, the crowd was dense, teeming with people; however, under the oppressive presence of High-Tier Awakeners, a basic sense of order was maintained.
A formal student approached the crowd, and after a brief moment of gathering his thoughts, his voice rang out like a tolling bell.
"Those who intend to sign up for Torchfire Academy’s preliminary selection should proceed to Area One for identity registration and then follow the guided steps to continue orderly."
"Remember! Anyone interfering with the recruitment selection process will be severely punished by our academy!"
Soon, long lines formed in front of several registration booths.
In most queues, there were roughly dressed mercenaries and idle Awakeners with sharp swords at their sides, occasionally interspersed with genuine commoners in coarse linen clothing and anxious expressions.
A few of the registrants stood out clearly from the rest of the crowd; they wore luxurious robes and were surrounded by dozens of servants, occupying a large space by themselves and keeping other applicants at bay.
Still, quite a few of these wealthy young men and women frowned.
"This Torchfire Academy actually makes us stand in line with these lowly commoners, outrageous!"
The speaker looked with disgust toward a boy not far away dressed in patched-up clothes, "This commoner also deludes himself with hopes of entering Torchfire Academy, hmph, it truly lowers our standards! These people should just stay in their place, so as not to sully our vision."
