Chapter 517: Chapter 360: Whatever is Sought, the Mission Must be Accomplished
Grand Havoc Archipelago, Grand Havoc City.
Although Grand Havoc City’s overall strength was slightly inferior to the three great human forces: the Scarlet Lotus Empire, the Ancient Moon Dynasty, and the Seven Stars Alliance, if one were to speak solely of cities, Grand Havoc City was undisputedly the largest metropolis of the Shattered Sea.
It was said that a being of high status, with immense power, had shifted over a dozen oases and combined them with the central super-oasis to form the magnificent metropolis seen today.
The extent of Grand Havoc City was so vast that an old merchant could talk about it for ten days and nights and still not cover it all.
The entire city was divided into 50 major districts: the first to the tenth districts were the royal areas, the eleventh to the twentieth districts formed the upper city areas, the twenty-first to thirtieth districts comprised the lower city areas, and the rest constituted the outer city areas.
In the eleventh district of Grand Havoc City, there was a large mission hub belonging to the Hidden Assassination Pavilion.
This mission hub had high standards and governed many surrounding hubs. From the Hidden Assassination Pavilion’s assassins and hired killers undertaking missions to the wealthy merchants and nobles placing orders, many flowed through here.
The assassination missions available here were top-grade. Silver and gold badge assassins of the Hidden Assassination Pavilion often undertook missions from such major hubs.
However, today,
"What’s going on, why has all mission acceptance been suspended?"
"Issuing missions has stopped as well."
"Heh heh heh, it all stopped early this morning, haven’t you noticed that the whole hub is in chaos?"
This large mission hub’s above-ground portion was just a small building, but the underground space was vast, with several hundred employees or, shall we say, servants working just at this location.
The staff here had all signed indenture agreements; and not only the Hidden Assassination Pavilion did this but the vast majority of organizations, oases, and nobility owned a large number of bonded servants constrained by various means.
The Shattered Sea was stronger than other Great Domains, but at the same time, its hierarchy was more solidified.
Masters were masters and servants were servants.
The employees at a hub like this one were involved in mission transactions and protecting the hub, occasionally moonlighting as assassins. Most of them had been soul-branded, although the high-ranking individuals in the hub would release these people from their soul-brand contracts upon leaving, following orders.
The contracts that had confined them for years, even decades, shattered suddenly on this day.
Yet, the expression on the majority of their faces was not one of excitement but one of bewilderment and aimlessness. They continued to remain in the hub, following the orders left by the higher-ups and the inertia of their past routines, absent-mindedly. However, whispers from the outside added a layer of anxiety to their confusion.
"What on earth has happened? Is the Hidden Assassination Pavilion not doing business anymore!"
A noble entirely shrouded in a black robe and hood, yet revealing a hint of luxurious jewelry around the collar, incessantly berated a girl at the reception desk who lowered her head and dared not utter a word in response.
That was until a weathered man with two swords at his waist and wearing a black eyepatch intervened.
"No matter how much you ask, these people won’t be able to answer you, they’re probably more befuddled than you are," he said.
The one-eyed man exhaled a ring of smoke and continued, "However, I did hear a bit of news from a friend."
This one-eyed man made no effort to conceal himself, his two swords and eyepatch were distinctive features, and his striking fire-red short hair quickly led people in the underground hall to recognize this strong individual’s true identity.
He was the renowned Six Senses of the Grand Havoc Archipelago region—the One-eyed Sword King!
Titles containing the word "king" allowed even those who did not know him to discern that amid Six Senses, this individual stood out as one of the rare few strongest beings just below mythic stature.
The presence of such a person at a Hidden Assassination Pavilion’s mission hub was not unexpected.
The Hidden Assassination Pavilion was number one among the assassin’s guilds across the whole of the Shattered Sea region. While the One-eyed Sword King, a title-holder, may not need to issue assassination bounties himself, he would occasionally undertake missions, especially when the bounty on a powerful individual rose steeply across multiple offers. When the stakes accumulated to a certain magnitude, even the strongest beings beneath mythic status could be tempted.
The One-eyed Sword King belonged to this category of the strongest.
Furthermore, even though he hailed from a freelance background, he was generous and had a multitude of friends all over the world, including major figures from Six Senses and superforces. This bigshot’s influence was recognized in many Great Oases and super-oases.
Likewise, this bigshot’s information was exceedingly reliable, far more so than those exaggerated rumors that became more outlandish as they spread.
Seeing that this important person was about to reveal something, many looked his way with curiosity and anticipation.
Indeed, the One-eyed Sword King did not disappoint the expectations of the crowd; he paused before continuing,
"Based on the little information I was able to gather, the Hidden Assassination Pavilion has already sold off a major portion of its operations, and this hub is likely one of the parts sold off."
"Sold off? Impossible, how could a superforce like the Hidden Assassination Pavilion commit such self-mutilation?"
"Perhaps, they had no choice but to do so?"
"What could force a colossus like the Hidden Assassination Pavilion into such a corner?"
"Not necessarily, the Hidden Assassination Pavilion is indeed powerful, but compared to the Scarlet Lotus Empire, Grand Havoc City, and the like, it is insignificant."
"Maybe it’s the result of a wager among mythic beings. Think about it, mythic beings using their own forces as pawns. If they lose, they might have to cut off a part. Isn’t that possible?"
A strong figure guessed with a chuckle.
Myth was too far off for them, after all. Even someone like the One-eyed Sword King, heralded among the strongest below mythic rank, could only gaze upon the backs of mythic beings, seldom having the chance to encounter such entities.
