Chapter 350: Chapter 297: Rule-Based Mysterious Evil (Two-In-One)
Falling Star Pit, a place where directions couldn’t be discerned.
The gray fog was heavy, the mountain rocks rugged and angular; a few protruding crystal stones were notably striking in the eyes of the caravan.
"We’ve circled back here again, something’s not right, very not right!"
A burly man dressed in navy blue armor, wielding a sword and shield, furrowed his brow, carefully guarding the front of the carriage as it slowly advanced.
Although there were only a handful of Mysterious Evils around, posing no threat, the middle-aged strongman still had an ominous premonition.
Suddenly,
with a dreadful scream, the middle-aged strongman swiftly turned his head, only to find one less figure in his team.
"Where’s Little Five?"
On hearing the captain of the guards’ words, the few guards suddenly widened their eyes,
"Little Five... Little Five is gone!"
"He couldn’t have gone to relieve himself."
"I remember he was just here a moment ago."
The middle-aged man’s frown deepened. Was it only he who had heard that scream just now?
The sense of foreboding in his heart became more pronounced, yet he had no clue where it came from, zero leads to follow—his only choice was to order the group to move on. The chariot too continued to roll forward, and despite the uneven ground beneath, it moved with unbelievable stability; the ground seemed to smooth out wherever the wheels passed.
This was a special Ability, affixed atop the Strange Implement chariot.
At the four corners of the chariot’s top, four candles burned fiercely, their invisible force dispelling the dense fog around them.
However,
the fog seemed to be getting thicker and the Mysterious Evils appeared unaffected by the candlelight, continuously manifesting, making everything seem abnormal.
The middle-aged strongman continually knitted his brows, when suddenly, another scream rang out.
No sooner had the scream arisen than he burst forth, but still, he was too late; before him lay only emptiness, no trace left, only one fewer guard in the team.
The caravan had no choice but to stop.
The burly man approached the front of the carriage, his expression grave, "Your Highness, Princess, the situation is grim—we may be trapped within a kind of perilous place."
Inside the carriage, a girl whose face still bore traces of youthfulness drew back the curtain.
She was dressed in lavish clothes, her earrings shaped like six-pointed stars, and despite her young age, there was a royal majesty in her expression. Her palms were clenched tightly, showing nervousness yet she managed to steady herself.
"This route, our City of Fallen Stars has traveled countless times. One possibility is that we’ve been affected by the fog tide, unknowingly straying from the path, and another is that this route has undergone new changes."
Either possibility wasn’t uncommon in the Ghastly Realm.
Even the most verified, safest route could suddenly become dangerous—that was normal.
This is the Ghastly Realm; danger is the norm!
"Uncle Zel, what should we do now?"
"First, we’ll use the Divination Ritual to see if we can find a way out."
Guard Captain Zel, thinking of this, immediately retrieved some materials from a storage-type Strange Implement and started the arrangement for the ritual—setting up a ritual in such a dangerous environment was risky and time-consuming. But they were at a loss for exit options; to keep moving would not just lead them back to where they started but also continue the mysteriously vanishing of team members.
There was an invisible danger present!
It had to be uncovered.
Zel, along with a few Mages skilled in rituals, fiddled with the setup and started the divination.
Crack—
The divining instrument shattered violently.
It failed.
"We are under the influence of a high-rank entity!"
A Mage proficient in divination murmured, speculated based on the limited information, his face steadily paling, "We... we might be inside the body of a terrifying entity!"
On hearing this interpretation and correlating it with their current experiences, the burly man’s eyes widened, and his face also turned a shade paler.
"There’s a possibility that what we’ve encountered is..."
"A rule-based Mysterious Evil!"
...
"Rule-based Mysterious Evil?"
Most of the guards were still clueless, even the ’well-learned’ Mages in the group frowned in confusion.
Only the Third Princess inside the chariot swayed slightly, unable to keep her face from turning pale.
The burly captain took a deep breath,
"Above the Seven Stars, the Mysterious Evils comparable to mythical entities are divided into three types. The first type is the Nest-type, with a massive, fierce and terrifying form, capable of endlessly breeding lower-tier Mysterious Evils rated beneath itself, almost without limit."
"Such Nest-types, if they wish, could spawn a wave of Mysterious Evils that could destroy an ordinary world, causing an apocalypse."
"The second type is the conventional type—conventional meaning their combat methods and size are somewhat similar to mythical entities, with a theory that they are the higher ranks of those hidden Mysterious Evils among the middle- and low-stars."
"The third type is the rule-based Mysterious Evil, the most fearsome of them all, without a corporeal form, enveloping worlds, and once ensnared, even mythical beings might perish."
"Hiss—"
After learning this information, the guards turned an even paler shade, their legs trembling.
They were elite, yes, but facing a Seven Star Mysterious Evil, especially the most terrifying kind among them, the magnitude of the threat was too much for these minor characters to withstand!
Realizing his words were not good for morale, the burly man hastened to add,
"But we still have hope!"
"If we were facing a Nest-type or conventional Seven Star apocalypse-class Mysterious Evil, we’d definitely have no chance of survival, but since we’re facing a rule-based one, there’s still a gleam of hope."
"Rule-based, as the name implies, kills with rules. Such Mysterious Evils have their own hunting mechanisms and behavioral logic. At the same time, if we can discern this Mysterious Evil’s hunting logic and find its loopholes, we can escape!"
