Chapter 311: Chapter 275: Shocking All Parties (Seeking Monthly Pass)
The Shui Ze base city, once shrouded in dark clouds above its forest of skyscrapers, now basked in strands of warm sunlight falling from the heavens and onto the somewhat disheveled city below.
From various underground shelters, residents gradually emerged, looking up at the sky and displaying expressions of relief at having survived the ordeal.
"Gosh, there’s so much broken glass; the battle must have been incredibly fierce!"
"Look over there; the building is cracked too. But from what I can see, the monsters didn’t reach inside our base city. These damages are likely just the aftermath of the battle!"
"Aftermath, you mean that kind of wave that could shatter the surrounding land and mountains? Yikes—!"
In truth, nobody had ever witnessed such a high-end scenario.
But just because they hadn’t seen it, didn’t mean they couldn’t use their imagination, right? Aside from that, they’d acquired plenty of theoretical knowledge from novels, movies, and animations—which were more or less accurate.
With just a bit of imagination, they were absolutely astounded.
"The siege waves must be terrifying; I wonder if our frontline warriors are alright."
At that moment, everyone fell silent.
They had survived the disaster by a narrow margin, but this was because, out of sight, there were people who had defended the last glimmers of dawn for them.
Those who ventured into the darkness clad in black trench coats.
Among the emerging crowd, a young man with an ordinary appearance was looking around in surprise, his observations much more meticulous than the average person’s—lingering on the shattered glass and cracked walls before gazing off into the distance.
The sky was a brilliant blue, dotted with white clouds.
Limited by the high-rise buildings within the city, the spy had a restricted field of vision and couldn’t see the far ends, only able to analyze based on existing clues.
"Looking at it, it seems Dong Huang has managed to fend off the siege wave—unbelievable!"
"But a wave is still a wave; Dong Huang’s victory, if there was one, must have come at a grim cost. The extent of the damage on the outskirts of the base city alone provides some insight."
"There was also a very intense earthquake and loud bangs previously."
The spy pondered and felt quite certain.
What remained was to find an opportunity to scout the outer defense line and gather more detailed intelligence—which, for a professional spy like him, wasn’t difficult.
...
In the Sunset Country,
Yul and other high-ranking officials of the Night Walkers organization were constantly monitoring Dong Huang’s situation. However, after the arrival of the Tide of Gray Mist, communication blockages and unstable signals had become increasingly severe, making it difficult for them to obtain news from distant Dong Huang.
But still, they waited.
This battle could very likely affect the future world order.
"From what we currently see, the scale of the super wave is far more frightening than we anticipated. This time, even the Phoenix might have miscalculated!"
On the screen in the meeting room, a photo was projected.
It was a shot taken from afar of the waves bearing down on the defensive line. Even though it was taken from a great distance and the image was unclear, the sight made Yul and the others gasp.
There’s no stopping it!
It seemed utterly unstoppable!
"Dong Huang is finished, and so is the Phoenix."
"Yes, if they lose a large number of Awakeners in this battle, their future will be difficult... With such an overwhelming scale of the wave, even attempting a breakout would be impossible, right?"
The loss, that was for the Phoenix, for Dong Huang.
The Sunset Country didn’t suffer much; at most, it was the loss of Princess Anna, Iris, and others.
Yet, even the mighty Phoenix seemed insignificant under the super wave and couldn’t resist the tide’s erosion. This made Yul and the others unavoidably feel a mix of sorrow and sympathy.
The meeting room fell into silence.
Time ticked away anxiously.
"It’s been three hours since the wave nearly reached the city walls, right?"
"Hmm, the battle has probably ended by now... at least, the result should be out."
"But there’s still no news."
One possibility was that the message was delayed.
The other possibility, that no message could be delivered, wasn’t spoken aloud, but the thought crossed everyone’s mind.
Just then, bang—
The doors to the meeting room burst open, and a well-known expert known by the code name ’Black Knight’ from the Night Walkers organization hurried in.
"There’s news!"
"It’s from the Iris Knight, the latest update on the wave siege battle!"
Noticing the shock and excitement on the Black Knight’s face and hearing the words ’Iris,’ the few high officials also raised their eyebrows in surprise.
"Could it be..."
"Dong Huang withstood the super wave? Hisss—!"
"The power of Dong Huang, even if it’s stronger than our Sunset Country, couldn’t be that much stronger. This must be the Phoenix’s doing, but how did they do it!"
They couldn’t understand, and even by exhausting their imaginations, they could not conceive how that small number of Awakeners could have held off the Mysterious Evil’s wave.
The Non-human Realm? Before the countless waves, the beings of the Non-human Realm could at most protect themselves.
No, not even self-protection was possible—within such a terrifying scale of the wave, there were bound to be numerous Calamity Level Mysterious Evils.
With an incredulous tremble in his voice, Yul asked, "Did they really win? Iris survived, but what about Princess Anna and the others from our Sunset Country?"
Perhaps feeling that the question was too narrow, he continued, "What’s the situation in Shui Ze base city now, and what cost did Dong Huang and the Phoenix pay to defeat the Mysterious Evil wave?"
The Black Knight, who had rushed in, had an odd expression as if struggling with which question to answer first.
"Princess Anna is fine, and so are the others for the most part," he said.
"Oh?"
"The Shui Ze base city has sustained some damage, but overall, the destruction isn’t significant,"
the Black Knight said, pausing briefly and choosing his words carefully. "As for how much was sacrificed by Ember, the Iris Knight probably doesn’t know, only that the casualties were... very minor."
"Very minor?"
Yule was stunned, repeating it twice to confirm that the Black Knight wasn’t joking.
He widened his eyes.
One of the higher-ups couldn’t help but ask, "How minor is very minor, thousands, or hundreds?"
In his view, it would have been a remarkable miracle to hold the city with the sacrifice of thousands or even hundreds of Awakeners against the super wave attack, so saying minor wasn’t an exaggeration.
But the Black Knight’s expression turned strange again.
"The specific number, the Iris Knight isn’t clear about that either, but it’s estimated that it wouldn’t exceed two digits," he noted.
"After all, Mysterious Evil never managed to break through the defense line throughout the entire defense battle—it was all blocked and annihilated before that sprawling defensive line."
Accompanying this information were several post-battle photographs.
Limbs and body parts scattered everywhere.
Deep and wide trenches stretching into the distance, and terrifyingly large craters, all testifying to the ferocity of the battle and the horror of the super wave.
But was this war really not the pyrrhic victory they had imagined, but a complete triumph?
"Impossible!"
"With that few Awakeners, how could they possibly hold off millions of Mysterious Evil, and even achieve a complete victory!"
Even with the evidence before him, it was hard to believe.
No, impossible to believe!
"What about the more detailed process? What did the Iris Knight report exactly, what means did Ember use?"
Yule inquired.
One after another, the high-ranking officials leaned forward, with shock and intense curiosity.
But a hint of embarrassment appeared on the Black Knight’s face. "About that question..."
He paused, "The Iris Knight only reported the complete victory, and these photos were taken by other Wandering Knights, but they... they also only took these few pictures, glossing over the details of the battle without much elaboration."
Driven by curiosity yet unable to gain knowledge, stunned yet clueless.
Yule and the other high-ranking officials couldn’t help but feel frantic, but, to inquire the Iris Knight for details, was not something they could bring themselves to do.
Equally unable to swallow their pride and equally frantic was the Envoy of the White Tower hidden in a small cabin within the City of Mist.
He paced back and forth.
"What exactly was the outcome of that battle?"
"How did the people of Blue Star manage to control the colossus forged from the crucible, and for how long could they do so?"
"And that azure column of light, the bizarre wood sprouts..."
The doubts and shocks his mind harboured were far too numerous, driving him to near insanity.
However, he no longer possessed the Eye of the White Tower, unless he turned to the Wandering Knight Organization for information, but as an Envoy of the White Tower, he couldn’t bring himself to do it.
And he didn’t believe that the Wandering Knights would inform him of the events in Dong Huang.
The Envoy of the White Tower was torn with indecision.
Yet, he never imagined that a certain Wandering Knight organization not far away knew even less about the Tide of War—much less, in fact.
...
White-headed Eagle Federation.
A leader in a black leather coat was also waiting, awaiting the news. He sat in a silver-white reception room filled with technological style, lazily stirring his coffee upfront, emanating a calm and composed air.
Not far off, on another silver and white streamlined chair, sat an envoy from the Wave City-State dressed in blue robes.
He gazed at the white container in front of him and the viscous liquid inside with a hint of curiosity.
This Blue Star beverage known as coffee provided him with a very unique experience, one that he savored, but compared to this exotic drink, the blue-robed envoy was more concerned about the situation in the kingdom called Dong Huang.
Even if the outcome was already expected.
"It’s been about five hours since the Tide of War besieged the city," he mused.
The leader in the black coat nodded slightly, still very composed, "No news has come yet; let’s wait a bit longer, I’ve already had people looking into it."
"Moreover, no news isn’t necessarily bad news."
"Your Excellency is right,"
the Wave Envoy agreed, while internally shaking his head slightly.
In his opinion, there was no doubt about the potential of the Blue Star world—it was very high, producing many inherently talented individuals early on and achieving tier three Awakening due to Blue Star’s prior technological foundation. The research into the mystical and the development in mysticism were progressing rapidly.
However, Blue Star had a fatal flaw.
This small world was crammed with various political powers and countless nations. He assessed that the potential of just the White-headed Eagle Federation alone could surpass many worlds, and across the ocean lay Dong Huang, which was not a bit inferior to the White-headed Eagle Federation.
If these political entities were unified, Blue Star’s potential would be immeasurable.
But they were not, and there were even conflicts of interest.
However, this was not necessarily a bad thing for their Wave City-State.
He was just very curious about which Great Oasis force was cooperating with Dong Huang.
Knock, knock, knock—
The urgent knocking sounded, and the deputy quickly entered the room, his steps somewhat hasty, losing the usual composure.
"Leader, news about the Tide of War siege battle is in!"
