Chapter 302: Chapter 268: In the Name of the Great Cannon, Tearing Through the Darkness (Vote for Monthly Tickets!)
"The wave is coming!"
At the edge of sight, a black tide surged forth, devouring everything in its path.
Grass and trees withered and decayed in an instant, buildings collapsed, and the tide, like sticky ink, tainted the sky and earth black.
From the far end of the heavens, the clouds grew even more somber.
Surrounding clouds and mist were constantly eroding the Dawn District, seeking to snuff out this lone beacon of hope.
The light dimmed gradually.
As if a storm was on the horizon, clouds gathered over the Dawn District, covering the world beneath. The Pure White Tower at the center of the base city began to flicker with strands of golden light at its pinnacle, contending with the encroaching grey mist from all directions.
The sky was enshrouded with clouds, but still, threads of light pierced through, stubbornly spilling onto the earth.
Casting toward the far end, toward the tumultuous Mysterious Evil tide underneath the grey fog.
Their forms became clearer.
With necks askew and limbs twisted out of shape, but running astonishingly fast, were the head-shaking corpses.
Covered in dreadful white bones, with eyes of deep bone marrow were the Bone Spur Worms and other such creatures, surging forward.
Knocking Child, Iron Fat zombies, Serpent Mother, and the like, these sorts of Mysterious Evils were inconspicuous in such a massive wave, like a single droplet of water.
Only the likes of flesh giants, bone knights, and monstrous birds with human faces, either colossal in stature or capable of flight, stood out slightly as three-star Mysterious Evils.
But still, they were as numerous as ants.
To the naked eye, these three-star Mysterious Evils that only the strong of Blue Star could tackle, were beyond count here!
Matissa’s teeth were chattering with fear.
"Too, too many. How many Mysterious Evils are there, how many three-star Mysterious Evils!"
"Several million, perhaps."
Hearing Shi Yunxi’s still calm tone made Matissa baffled, "Aren’t you afraid? Several million! And how many Awakeners do we have here, what are we to defend with!"
Shi Yunxi just kept watching, silently clenching the scepter in her hand.
"If the mentor says we can hold off, then we can!"
This blind devotion left Matissa speechless, but as she turned to look into the distance at the white-robed figure standing on the high platform, much of the tension and panic in her heart indeed subsided.
Could they hold off?
Could they create a miracle?
She didn’t know, but under such a wave, all they could do was to resist with all their might. Once the defense line shattered, she, a three-time Awakener, feared she would be as insignificant and helpless as a regular person.
...
"F*ck! F*ck! F*ck!"
The envoy from Scorched Flame Oasis had his eyes wide open, regret welling up inside him.
Trembling, he looked into the distance at the rolling black tide coming their way, angrily confronting Red Rock, "This wave, its size is nothing like you described, Ah—!"
"We are also facing such a wave for the first time. Along the way, it has gathered too many Mysterious Evils, the number is..."
Seeing Red Rock also frightened and taken aback.
Flame Owl fell silent.
He rolled up his sleeves, secretly weighing his options.
’Under such a wave, breaking through is simply not possible, it seems we must truly fight for our lives.’
’Damn it—!’
’But why would a normal world like Blue Star trigger such a horrific scale of wave? This is unreasonable!’
...
...
The scale of the tide had been estimated by the Defense Bureau.
But an estimate was one thing, seeing with one’s own eyes was another entirely; those cold, hard numbers couldn’t begin to compare with the sheer terror now bearing down upon them!
When the number surpassed a certain threshold, it was enough to destroy everything!
"Director, we can hold them off, can’t we?"
"We can!"
Huang affirmed forcefully.
His eyes fixated on the distance, unwavering and unblinking, as though he wished to burn those fierce and Mysterious Evil faces into his memory.
In front of him, a few phantoms began to emerge, and in his ears the layered, countless roars of Mysterious Evil resounded.
Under the overwhelming numbers, the assault on their sanity crossed the vast distance, hurtling towards them.
Yet, under the illumination of Dawn’s Light, it quickly melted away like ice and snow.
Huang looked around and saw that the ordinary agents who had not yet awakened showed no anomalies, and he let out a long sigh of relief.
At least, if their sanity remained unaffected, they could unleash their full combat capabilities.
"Report the distance."
"Yes, the vanguard of the tide is only 7.8 kilometers away from our first line of defense."
"7.6 kilometers."
"7.3 kilometers."
Listening to his deputy’s report, Huang’s expression remained unchanged, but after a short wait, he said, "Begin the Thunder Strike tactics!"
Suddenly, on each of the waiting points, drones that were already primed, their wings began to spin, and with a buzzing sound, the silver-white drones ascended into the air, flying towards the black tide in the distance.
The Thunder Strike tactic originated from Dong Huang Research Institute’s "Thunder Talisman" technology.
After receiving the Torch-style equipment, Dong Huang Research Institute didn’t halt the research on various technologies. Based on the Thunder Talisman and combined with drone technology, this tactical weapon was born—the Thunder Strike drone.
On the body of the silver-white drone were engraved blue stripes.
Right before take-off, the Awakeners infused life energy, using it as the ignition point. As the drone flew, the stripes on its body glowed with a deep blue halo.
Buzzing, they pierced into the dark night sky.
Flying towards the forefront of the tide, several kilometers away.
Huang’s eyes were glued to the scene, his hand resting on the protective wall, pressing into it until a faint imprint of his palm appeared. He was oblivious to this, his gaze unblinking, looking into the distance.
They were getting closer!
Thick bone spurs whizzed through the dull sky, penetrating the fragile drone bodies and puncturing them.
Amidst a loud roar, a burst of deep blue lightning exploded in the distant sky.
Huang’s grip tightened even more.
The flying speed of the drones wasn’t fast enough to dodge long-range attacks from the likes of the Bone Spur Worm or Gui Lanterns—it was nearly impossible.
But, Mysterious Evil was chaotic, creatures without intelligence!
They would only kill any living being by instinct; the drones, however, were lifeless, merely objects.
A few were brought down by attacks, crashing mid-air, but many more still reached their intended destination.
"Crash strike!"
"Crash strike!"
"Crash strike!"
Drones buzzed, the blue halos etched on their bodies grew brighter, screaming as they plunged into the surging black tide.
Thunderlight burst forth.
The dazzling azure brilliance was still visible for miles, shining like fireworks under the night sky.
Huang held his binoculars tightly, staring as one Mysterious Evil after another, fierce and ferocious, was incinerated under the azure thunderlight.
One-star Mysterious Evils turned to smoke and vanished.
Two-star Mysterious Evils darkened and fell.
This lethality was much stronger than the initial Thunder Talismans! The thunder-strike drones had been proven effective, and countless Mysterious Evils were slain under thunder-strike tactics.
However,
Huang Hongtian saw that the gap blasted open by the azure thunderlight in the tide was filled by surrounding Mysterious Evils in just over a dozen seconds.
The black tide continued to roll in, undiminished.
The number was too overwhelming; the bright thunderlight, though dazzling, was engulfed by darkness in an instant.
...
"How can this be!"
Flame Owl’s eyes widened.
When the miraculous drones took to the sky, when the brilliant thunderlight blossomed, hope had ignited in his eyes, but it quickly faded.
He turned, looking towards Red Rock, "Quick, keep going! Send more of those drones!"
Red Rock’s smile was bitter, "These thunder-strike drones are expensive to produce and the process is intricate. They simply cannot be mass-produced on assembly lines and on top of that, they’re disposable goods."
It wasn’t that the thunder-strike drones weren’t powerful.
It was that the numbers of the tide were far beyond imagination.
At this moment,
At the forefront of the tide, some flying Mysterious Evils left behind the main force, flapping their wings towards the human gathering area.
Two-star Mysterious Evil flesh birds.
Three-star Mysterious Evil human-faced strange birds.
They were like a few droplets scattered ahead of the tide.
To be dealt with by the front-line Awakeners.
"Swoosh—"
Matissa, wielding her sword, unleashed a brilliant burst of sword light as a human-faced strange bird swooped down. With one thrust, she pierced the creature’s eye sockets, then elegantly dodged the inertially plunging corpse.
She executed a Sword Flower maneuver and continued to attack the incoming Mysterious Evils.
A few dozen seconds later, the battle ended, and the bodies of the ugly, ferocious Mysterious Evils gradually turned to smoke under the sunlight.
Matissa sheathed her sword.
There were no wounds on her body and she controlled her energy expenditure, keeping it to a minimum.
However, there was no relief on her face, only a mounting heaviness.
"What we’re encountering is merely an insignificant part of the forefront of the tide. What will happen when the entire tide washes over us?"
She couldn’t see any possibility of resistance!
Desperation set in.
She then looked toward Shi Yunxi, whose expression was grave, but seemingly still within a normal range.
"Do you have any plan?"
"Yes."
Shi Yunxi said, "The mentor has already devised a strategy. What we have to do is to hold our positions on the defense line and protect this stronghold!"
Her mission was called ’Protect the Great Cannon Stronghold’.
It was of utmost importance.
Shi Yunxi perhaps knew why as she looked back toward the gigantic object on the hill behind them, then refocused her gaze.
Determinedly, she faced the oncoming tide.
No matter who it was, no creature could cross over their defense!
The tide was drawing nearer.
The ground roared and trembled without a pause, the world grew darker, and the monstrous figures within the distant tide were now clearly visible.
The oppressive force bearing down on them made it nearly impossible for everyone to breathe.
They relied solely on their last faith and will to hold on tenaciously.
The emissary from Scorched Flame Oasis had turned pale.
Matissa’s teeth chattered as she looked at Shi Yunxi.
Huang still watched the front, expressionless.
Not far from him, a figure in a black coat, carrying a broad war blade on his back, suddenly spoke with an icy firmness, "The time has come, prepare to fire!"
"Prepare to fire!"
"Prepare to fire!"
"Taste the power of Old Wang’s Great Cannon!"
...
In front of the defensive line.
Matissa once again cut down a Mysterious Evil with her sword; she couldn’t remember how many she had killed and was gasping for breath.
But the Mysterious Evils she had killed were but a drop in the ocean compared to the distant roiling tide.
The hand holding the sword was trembling slightly.
And the ferocious visages in her eyes kept magnifying.
Suddenly,
Boom!
An azure beam of light appeared, bursting forth overhead, directly targeting the surging tide – the area densest with Mysterious Evils.
The colossal noise was deafening, the radiant blue light filling everyone’s field of vision.
The fierce wind tossed Matissa’s hair as she struggled to keep her eyes open.
In her view, bathed in the splendid blue light, those gruesome-faced Mysterious Evils dissolved like ice and snow.
One after another.
Even the giant, towering several dozen meters in the distance, wailed as its form twisted and broke apart under the same radiant blue light.
Gales, heatwaves, and shockwaves surged one after the other.
The warriors took shelter from the shockwaves, and when the resounding booms faded, they emerged to find a vast arc-shaped ravine in their view, a chunk of the black tide having been bisected.
Farther away, the dark and heavy clouds looming over the sky also frayed in the dazzling column of light.
A massive gap had been ripped open.
Through it, sunlight poured down.
