Chapter 85: Victory
Chapter 85: Chapter 85: Victory
Standing with the sword in his hand, Lake stood still as he observed his surroundings.
Kate was still guarding against him while the remaining students had slowly surrounded him.
After thinking for a bit, Lake waved his arm once more, a small formation forming in front of him as he manipulated his mana to cast a projectile spell towards Kate.
Seeing the small ball of mana flying towards her, Kate was secretly shocked but still reacted and swung her sword, cleaving the ball into two with her astral mana.
When she turned to look at Lake, he had already disappeared from his previous spot.
Swinging his sword, he directly knocked the weapon out of a student’s hand before slashing him across a non vital spot, leaving him bleeding and temporarily disabled.
Alec swooped forward and picked up the student before rushing back to the temporary infirmary on the side.
When he passed Lake, he was also secretly shocked by the fact that Lake could release mana from his body. However, he was even more shocked that even after standing so close to Lake, he still couldn’t sense even a hint of his existence!
Stretching out his mana, he had wanted to observe Lake’s internal structure and figure out if he was also a Martial Warrior like Kate despite the odds being highly unlikely but even after he covered the entire area, he couldn’t get a lock on Lake at all!
There was no mana, sound or smell and if it wasn’t for the fact that he had been watching this entire time, he would have thought Lake had vanished from the field!
Kate realized that Lake was trying to pick off the remaining students and rushed forward, trying to engage in close combat again.
That feeling of dominating after being dominated all this time was simply too addicting to Kate and she wanted to get a taste of it again.
Unfortunately, Lake didn’t plan to give Kate the chance. With another wave of his hand he cast a second low level spell.
Smoke Screen!
Soon a cloud of thick white fog appeared around him, blocking all sight within the fog and covering the entire field.
Kate’s pupils constricted upon realizing that she had lost track of Lake.
Spreading out her mana into the surrounding, she found traces of the remaining students but soon discovered that they were being defeated one by one as she felt them being dragged out of the field presuming by the instructors after confirming that they had fallen.
Suddenly Kate thought of something and poured mana into her blade causing a brilliant starlight to illuminate the fog filled field.
With a wave of her sword, a large gust of wind was blown up into the surrounding area, dispersing the fog around her.
After the fog dissipated, Kate realized that Lake had vanished and the remaining students had all been defeated.
Realizing that she was the only one left, she hurriedly tried to find Lake but no matter how hard she looked, she couldn’t find him.
This left her confused until she looked at the crowd of spectating students who were all watching with dumbfounded expression. Looking over to the side where the injured students had been taken, she could even see that Alec and Bane had strange expressions.
Feeling that something wasn’t right, Kate was about to spread out her mana when she heard a shout from the spectating crowd.
"Watch out behind you!"
The person who shouted, naturally, was Zeke who could clearly see what was going on to his disbelief.
When Kate heard his words, she immediately turned around as she raised her sword but there was still nothing there.
As confusion slowly filled her heart, Kate suddenly felt a sharp pain in her back.
Slice!
The sound of flesh being cut sounded out as a long cut wound appeared on her back.
Since she had a low mana supply and hadn’t had much time to accustom herself to her newfound powers, she didn’t consciously keep up her mana enhancement all the time. Only having it up whenever she was facing an enemy.
However, since Lake had disappeared from her sight, she had subconsciously let down her guard for a brief moment which allowed an attack that normally, wouldn’t be able to do much damage, to leave her severely injured!
After all, without actively using mana to strengthen her body, Kate’s physical prowess was only barely on the same level as a Mid Tier Martial Apprentice after going through the nourishment of her astral mana.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t even be on the same level as a Low Tier Martial Apprentice!
With the wound on her back, Kate dashed forward with the speed of a High Level Martial Warrior! At her current speed, unless one was also a High Tier Martial Warrior, it was impossible to stay hidden behind her.
Just as she thought, as soon as she turned around, she saw Lake standing behind her silently with a bloody longsword in his hand.
Kate gritted her teeth as she felt the searing pain on her back as blood continued to flow profusely. That slash seemed to have cut one of her major arteries! If she didn’t seek medical attention soon, she would continue to get weaker and weaker until she eventually died of blood loss!
Usually one could use mana to delay this type of injury but Kate’s mana supply wasn’t that high to begin with. After going through such a fight, her mana reserves had been used up by a fair bit due to her novice skills in manipulating mana, resulting in a great amount of mana being wasted by each of her attacks.
When Kate thought of this, she gritted her teeth.
She could guess that Lake had realized that he couldn’t win in a head on fight so he aimed for a sneak attack to disable her in one blow. By disappearing from sight and all senses, he made her subconsciously let down her guard before attacking immediately after!
When she thought of this, she suddenly remembered that Lake’s whole character during the entrance exam was an assassin who would do anything and everything in order to win!
Manipulating his opponents both mentally and physically leaving them helpless before his final attack.
"Absolutely despicable!" Kate shouted internally.
She realized that she had already lost from the moment she let her guard down.
It seems that this time, even with her overwhelming power advantage, Lake still found a way to play around with her and achieve victory through outsmarting her!
As she realized what happened, Kate felt horrible.
She could admit defeat if the opponent was stronger than her as there was nothing she could do about it, but when it came to admitting that they were smarter than her, she couldn’t accept it!
The spectators were in even more disbelief. They had seen the whole thing from a third person perspective and could see exactly how Lake played around with Kate’s senses and mind in such a short time.
Such an expert level of mental manipulation was simply too high for them to believe that Lake was a student. You’ll have an easier time convincing them that he was a devil sent from hell to rain terror down on the world than that!
Zeke wanted to rush up upon seeing Kate’s injuries but he had been attending this academy for a year longer than both Kate and Lake. That’s why he knew how strict the rules were within a martial match like this with an instructor overseeing it.
He didn’t dare to go against the academy’s rules as he could risk getting punished, even with his background, or worse, he could have his points reduced.
Gwen’s eyes had been wide open throughout the entire match.
From the moment Lake went berserk to the moment he went "invisible", she had been watching carefully and was truly shocked by what she had seen.
The Silverveil Royal Family had many secret techniques they had developed over the years as the number one acknowledged martial arts family.
Among the skills and battle techniques Lake had deployed just now, several of them were on the same level with some of their top techniques while a few even surpassed them!
Especially that technique where Lake shot mana out of his body and created a fog out of thin air. It was very similar to the illustration in one of the secret scrolls that their family had recovered from several rifts over the last century.
Unfortunately, due to the scrolls being written in an unrecognizable language, they had never had the chance to understand the meaning of the scrolls and could only make assumptions from the illustrations inside them.
If it was possible that Lake had managed to uncover something similar to the contents of the scrolls or even somehow managed to decipher the language within them, she felt that she needed to get in contact with this seemingly mysterious first year student.
As various thoughts flashed through her mind, she watched as the man in the field stabbed his sword into the ground as he casually folded his arms.
"It’s my win."
