Chapter 68: Instructor’s Challenge
Chapter 68: Chapter 68: Instructor’s Challenge
A few minutes later Kate collapsed onto the floor, exhausted. She was panting and wheezing as she resisted the urge to throw up. Her throat felt like it was on fire as she desperately gasped for air.
Following her eyes you could see that she was staring at the extended fist that was merely inches away from crushing her head.
Even now she still had a lingering fear when she saw that fist.
Just then, Lake’s fist was flying towards her. She wanted to dodge but her body had finally given up on her after pushing it so much.
She went limp and couldn’t muster any strength at all. Lake’s fist was still approaching and was about to smash into her face but stopped right before it hit her, throwing a gust of wind into her face, pushing her powerless body onto the floor.
As she laid on the floor, sweat continued to drip from her pale white skin, forming a small puddle beneath her.
At this point Kate had already realized what had happened.
She wasn’t an idiot and has also experienced limit training a few times before so she knew the effects of it well.
Lake’s attacks were relentless and quick, giving her no time to think before so she wasn’t able to fully understand what was going on.
Once she had collapsed on the floor and had the chance to catch her breath, she had plenty of time to think about what just happened.
Although she herself felt that it was unbelievable for a student like Lake to conduct limit training on her, the results spoke for themselves.
Feeling what little remained of her mana, Kate could sense a slightly purer force emanating from it. If her senses weren’t lying to her, battling with Lake seemed to have increased the strength of her mana by a decent amount, which was one of the benefits of limit training that Kate knew of.
However, from what Kate could feel, the level that her mana strength had increased by seems to surpass any previous training sessions she had gone through before.
The other piece of evidence to support her guess was the severe pain her body was currently going through.
Limit training puts a lot of stress on the body, which often resulted in collapsing after a five minute session, yet, from her estimation, at least 15 minutes had passed since she started her spar with Lake.
Wait, spar?
"Right, this was supposed to be a spar between students. Why the hell did it turn into a limit training session?"
Kate suddenly realized a problem.
Just now she was still a little disorientated and had actually forgotten that she was in the academy. When she thought about it deeper, she realized that there was a big flaw in her previous logic.
If Lake was limit training her, why did he do it?
This sudden realization made Kate turn her eyes to Lake but in the instant that both of their eyes met, Kate froze as an almost instinctive fear rose up inside her.
It seems that the killing intent she felt from Lake’s attacks had left a deep impact on both her mind and body, making her feel a slight fear whenever she faced Lake.
Looking into Lake’s cold blue eyes, Kate had the illusion of being a mere rabbit staring into the eyes of a wolf as she shivered subconsciously.
...
Lake retracted his fist as he stared at the exhausted Kate on the floor.
Naturally, he didn’t decide to limit train Kate out of the kindness of his heart. He wasn’t even sure if such a thing existed.
The reason he decided to help her was because he needed allies within the academy.
Everyone already had a negative opinion of him thanks to the increase in the amount of points to graduate.
Lake felt that if it were to continue it would cause some problems later down.
Originally, he wanted to take it slow and slowly reconcile with everyone, but who knew that he would get such a good opportunity to mend the situation here.
Across the past two days Lake had played the role of a spectator amongst his peers and quietly observed the entire class, figuring out their dynamics, interests, influences and backgrounds and from that he quickly learned that it was Kate who held the most power in the class.
In fact, Lake was impressed at how fast Kate was able to seize power in the class but didn’t find it too surprising.
Lake had gone through her fate on multiple occasions and knew that she had an entire guild backing her up, so it wasn’t surprising for people to flock to her on their own.
What’s even more impressive was the fact that Kate had taken the time to research and memorize all the information about her classmates that she gathered from investigations she had conducted on them.
Using this information in combination with her background, she was able to play her cards right and quickly seize a position of influence in her class within only two days.
Lake even knew that she was also secretly investigating him and that her parents seem to strongly reject the idea of her doing it, but he didn’t care to interfere and in fact was more curious about what she would find out if she did continue her investigation.
After all, Kate’s parents were both hunters who stood at the top of the world ranking in the top ten guilds with Kate’s father being one of the few practitioners that made it to the Martial Lord Realm. For someone like that to not want to investigate his background, Lake wondered if there was something more to it than that.
However, whether there really was or not was of no concern to Lake at this point. Everything would eventually be revealed through Kate’s fate in the future so there was no need to rush things.
For now, Lake should just focus on better increasing his standing in the academy.
"You managed to survive close to fifteen minutes under limit training. Congratulations."
Lake spoke as he looked at Kate with a calm expression.
Kate flinched slightly when she heard Lake suddenly talk as she was still deep in thought, but when she heard his words she felt slightly better about herself.
"It’s okay, everything is fine. At least I managed to benefit from this torture- no training, its training. Think positively and all the pain will slowly fade. Although his method may have been extremely overbearing, it seems like he didn’t mean anything bad by it... I think."
Kate slowly recovered as she thought to herself.
In fact, she wanted to respond to Lake but found that she had no energy to even speak so she just slightly nodded her head to show her acknowledgement.
Kate had already calmed down and her body had relaxed from its previous tension. As she relaxed, a sudden wave of drowsiness washed over her, causing her heavy breathing to slightly even out and her eyelids to feel heavy.
Feeling herself falling asleep, Kate wanted to resist the urge to pass out but soon found a finger had been placed on her forehead.
She suddenly felt an extremely cold energy flow out of the finger and into her body, quickly spreading through her entire body making her feel extremely comfortable.
"What is this? So comfortable. I feel like I just had a cold shower after a hard day of training. When was the last time I ever felt this relaxed? Ah, what does it matter? This is amazing, I should just take the chance to enjoy this while it lasts."
With the addition of the extremely comfortable cold energy, Kate’s mind slowly turned to clouds as she quickly forgot her previous intentions of wanting to stay awake.
The drowsiness had intensified once more as she slowly drifted to sleep.
"Rest well."
Before she completely fell asleep, she heard Lake’s voice once more as her consciousness slowly drifted away.
Looking at the relaxed expression on Kate’s face, Lake slowly got up as he watched as Instructor Bane quickly entered the arena and rushed towards the unconscious Kate.
Dropping to a knee, he grabbed her wrist before quickly observing her condition.
After confirming she had just fallen asleep, he sighed before looking at Lake with serious yet curious eyes.
"Rank 1 Candidate Lake Egoven, do you mind explaining your intentions by attacking your classmate so fiercely during a light sparring match?"
"Reporting to the Instructor, I saw an opportunity to help a fellow student advance in their practice and took the chance to assist them. If I didn’t attack as strongly as I did, I fear that the effect of the training would have been too little and wouldn’t have achieved as much otherwise."
Hearing Lake’s response, Instructor Bane only nodded his head. He also understood Lake’s intention from the start and only asked to confirm it.
The other student’s also heard Lake’s words as the door to the walled off arena was opened and they were all martial arts practitioners with mana flowing through them. Their senses have long been enhanced to the point of being superhuman.
When everyone heard Lake’s words, no matter how much they disliked Lake they couldn’t help but sigh. It was true that Lake had greatly helped Kate in terms of her practice with this training session so they couldn’t find fault with him with some even wondering if they could also ask for a spar.
However, when they thought about the ruthless attacks Lake had employed on Kate they quickly halted those trains of thought.
"Since you were trying to help your classmate in their practice, I won’t pursue this matter."
Instructor Bane spoke as he picked up the unconscious Kate, motioning for one of the other staff in the hall to come over and carry her away to the infirmary.
Injury in the sparring hall is common so there was always staff on standby.
Watching the nurse take Kate away, Lake nodded his head as he responded to Instructor Bane.
"Thank you for your understanding, sir!"
"Don’t think this matter is over however," Bane suddenly spoke as he smiled mysteriously.
Suddenly, Lake had a bad premonition when he looked at Bane’s smile.
"After observing your spar with your classmate, I noticed that your Fitness Index greatly surpassed the rest of your peers. From what you just showed you should be somewhere around Mid-Rank Martial Apprentice which would already be considered a phenomenal achievement for a first year who just entered the academy, but after observing further I found that you were still holding back a lot of your full strength."
As Bane spoke he took off his coat as he threw it to the ground before stretching a bit, cracking sounds resonating through the stage. Lake could see the various scars across his body that covered him like tattoos.
Bane’s fate wasn’t protected so Lake could still read through it which was why he knew that all those scars came from countless life or death battles with thousands of dangerous beasts inside rifts.
"If my student isn’t reaching their maximum potential it shows that I have failed my role as an instructor. That’s why, starting now, I want you to go all out and attack me and don’t you dare try to hold back. I’ve had decades worth of experience fighting and training countless students, I can see through your tricks like glass."
Once Instructor Bane’s words fell, everyone’s mouth felt dry.
Fight an instructor? Is this for real? What was that about being a Mid Rank Martial Apprentice? Possibly stronger too? Does that make sense?
Everyone was in a state of disbelief as they just looked at the scene with a stunned expression on their face.
Bradford also watched Lake’s reaction as he thought to himself, "How are you going to get out of this one now, Lake?"
He knew a bit about Instructor Bane’s past and knew that Lake wasn’t in any trouble with this spar against the instructor so long as he didn’t hold back. However, what would happen afterwards would be the problem.
If Lake was truly hiding his strength, then that means he would be a much stronger force in the following battle, possibly High Rank Martial Apprentice which, if it were a few years ago, would be on the same level as the third year students. Now however there were a lot of monsters in the third year including the Princess of the Royal Family.
Most of the third years were already Martial Warriors which was already a terrifying prospect as there were at least a hundred of them, each of them being only around twenty years old. Their future achievements once they graduate would be hard to describe.
The problem with the current situation is, if Lake was truly holding back and his strength surpassed the group of instructors expectations again, the chances of them upping the difficulty of the following assignment for the first years would be very high.
Bradford wondered, if that happened, would even 5% of the first years be able to successfully graduate by the end of the year?
It wasn’t only Bradford who thought of this, but many students in the crowd had also come to the same conclusion.
Most of them were praying for Lake to just take the beating now and hold back his strength for the sake of their future. Otherwise, they could already imagine how tragic the following years were going to be.
At this point, Lake was standing quietly on the stage.
