Chapter 59: Massive Gains!

Chapter 59: Chapter 59: Massive Gains!

As the Wolf King’s vitality finally expired, Lake walked forward and grabbed its fate.

[Detected that the Host has come in contact with a Leader’s fate. Beginning the absorption process...]

Lake was surprised as he read the system’s notification. It seems that the Empress wasn’t completely correct with her opinion of the Wolf King.

Although it was true he didn’t have the requirement to be a King, he was already destined to be a leader.

[Absorption complete.]

[+1000 RP Points]

[RP Points = 2023.510]

When Lake saw the successive system notification, he was filled with immense joy. Although he didn’t manage to get his hands on the Fruit of Evolution, just the large amount of RP points he had gathered from this trip to the rift was enough to satisfy him.

It seemed that if Lake wanted to continue upgrading his skills in the future, he would have to spend a lot of his time hunting in rifts, especially with the way the skill upgrades had been eating through his RP stockpile.

It was at that moment a loud sound, akin to glass shattering, echoed throughout the Garden as the entire rift began to shake violently.

"It seems the rift has entered the Destruction Phase..." Lake thought to himself as he looked at the blue sky that had started cracking open. As Lake peered beyond the sky he saw an unending darkness that he could only assume to be the void.

Without hesitation, Lake immediately hopped onto the Skylark before ordering it to fly south.

He had already collected everything he needed from the Facility including the storage device for Bloom. All he needed to do now was to collect his last set of "luggage".

...

In another area of the Garden, Romero and the rest were currently looking up at the cracked sky with a look of pleasant surprise on their face.

A few hours ago they followed the direction their wraith-like savior gave them and eventually found the mana fruits that the ghostly figure spoke of.

When they first arrived they were deeply disturbed by the bloody sight of the mutilated ape corpses strewn about but they soon adapted to it, not because they felt that this was normal, but that they were simply too tired to care.

After eating some of the fruits, their mana began to recover at an incredible rate.

Due to the injuries she received before, Harper decided to take the chance to rest. Compared to when she had just fallen down the cliff, she was in a much better state now that she had a well of mana to boost her recovery.

As the group rested however, the sounds of the battle coming from the center of the rift had kept them completely entranced. Every now and then they would hear the loud shriek of a bird before the flash of lighting assaulted their eyes which was swiftly followed by the sound of thunder slamming against their eardrums.

At some point in the battle the lightning had stopped. When they were finally starting to think that the battle must have ended, the sounds of thunder came again, this time even louder than before with less time between each strike.

Eventually however, the lightning and thunder calmed down and silence had returned once more but only a few minutes after another incredible change had taken place.

The loud sound of something shattering rang out as cracks began to appear in the sky.

Romero and the others were all knowledgeable hunters and after hearing the noise of the battle die down, they could put two and two together and knew that the rift had entered the Destruction Phase.

In a few minutes, portals were going to start appearing which would be their exit out of this hellhole. These portals would be appearing near the center of the rift so if they wished to get out of here, they would have to start moving now.

Romero was about to give the order for everyone to start moving but had noticed something strange out of the corner of his eyes.

Flying in the sky a long distance away was the silhouette of a large bird-like creature that was flying towards their direction.

Romero still remembered the sounds of a bird shrieking coming from the sounds of battle towards the center of the rift and after seeing the direction the silhouette was coming from, Romero immediately had a bad feeling.

"Prepare to run!"

He shouted at the others slightly startling them but they still followed his orders and got up. Professor Sun and Eliza were helping up Harper who couldn’t move on her own.

Although they were not sure why Romero wanted them to run, they knew he wouldn’t say so for nothing.

It was at that moment, the silhouette in the distance as if sensing their intent to flee, flapped its wings as it suddenly sped up, breaking the sound barrier in the process. In less than a second the bird had crossed several kilometers as it fasted approached Romero and his group.

Before any of them could even begin to dash off, the silhouette that was tens of kilometers away arrived in front of Romero and the rest, revealing its majestic figure for them to see clearly.

"Run!"

Romero shouted as he stepped forward to block the bird from going after the rest.

However, Romero was quick to notice some oddities when he stared at the large body of the bird. There were wounds all over its body, blood was flowing from a deep gouge in the creature’s throat. Its eyes were also staring at him with a dull and lifeless look as if it was a living corpse.

When Romero noticed these oddities he suddenly heard a voice coming from the bird that startled him deeply as a figure slowly revealed itself to be standing on the back of the large bird.

"What are you all doing?" Lake asked as he looked at Romero and the rest who still had not left.

"..."

For a few seconds, the area went dead silent as everyone stared with mouths wide open at the figure dressed in black at the top of the bird.

Lake smiled at their reaction as he spoke, "Hurry up and get on, the rift is going to collapse soon and it would take up to much time for you all to reach the central area if you had to carry one of your companions the entire way there."

When Romero heard his words he was jolted back to reality as he looked at Lake with slight suspicion.

"Is that bird... obeying your command?"

"hmm? This thing? After I found it beaten half to death I kind of just beat it up some more until it listened to me. It was actually pretty intelligent and followed my commands pretty well."

Lake came up with a simple story as to why the Skylark was listening to him. It seems like Romero still wasn’t convinced but he didn’t continue asking further.

"What happened at the center of the rift?" Romero decided to ask a question that was on his mind for a while now.

"There was a battle between some powerhouse creatures. Two of them died causing the rift to enter the Destruction Phase ahead of time. This one was the only survivor but that’s not the point, hurry up and get on before the rift collapses and kills us all."

Hearing Lake’s answer, Romero only nodded before helping Harper and the rest atop the back of the Skylark. He still wasn’t completely convinced about Lake’s story but he at least knew that Lake captured the Skylark to come help them in their escape.

Romero wasn’t an ungrateful person so he decided to not question Lake’s story in light of his kind action.

When everyone was settled down, Lake told them to hold on tight before ordering the Skylark fly up.

With a flap of its wings, the Skylark rose high into the sky as wind crashed against everyone’s face. Luckily they were all decently high Martial Artists and were able to endure the intense wind current without being thrown off.

When the Skylark had stabilized in the air and started to fly straight, the current state of the garden was revealed for all of them to see.

Towards the center of the rift, the once magnificent Golden White Tree whose golden leaves left a brilliant shine to the Garden had all but withered away as they floated in the wind leaving only the sad figure of the massive white tree behind.

Far out towards the barrier of the Garden, the rift had already started to show signs of collapsing as the land near the edges had started to crumble away, slowly being consumed by an approaching void.

Paired with the cracks in the sky, the once beautiful Garden now looked like the site of an apocalypse.

...

After flying for a few minutes, the group eventually found a portal leading to the outside world.

After everyone had dismounted from the Skylark, Lake looked at everyone else before pointing to the Skylark and saying, "You guy’s leave first, I have some business to take care of."

When the group heard his words and saw that he was pointing at the Skylark, they immediately understood. Although Lake had seemingly tamed the Skylark, that was only because it was injured and didn’t dare to fight back against him.

If he were to release the Skylark into the outside world and it were to heal, the chances of it still obeying Lake was slim. To prevent future tragedy, it was better to finish it off now.

Romero nodded to Lake before leading everyone outside the rift. Right now, all they wanted to do was escape this nightmare and return to civilization.

After watching the last of them exit the rift through the portal, Lake turned his cold gaze towards the Skylark as he unsheathed his sword.

Although Romero and the rest were right in assuming that Lake was going to kill the Skylark, they were wrong when it came to his intention for doing so.

In the eyes of Lake, the Skylark wasn’t a threat to humanity or anything as it was already under his control. Instead, all Lake could see was a large pile of RP waiting to be harvested.

"Don’t resist or move." Lake coldly ordered as he walked towards the Skylark that had completely submitted to Lake who controlled Bloom.

Lake didn’t wish to waste time since the rift had already started to collapse. With swift movements, he laid his sword across the gouge in the Skylark’s throat and whipped it straight through the bird’s neck.

Since the Skylark was ordered to not resist, it didn’t use any mana to protect its body and simply allowed the sword to pass right through.

Blood dripped from the Skylark’s throat and beak, as its already dim eyes hazed over. During all of this the Skylark still didn’t make a noise or move, the orders of its master was absolute and it simply didn’t disobey as if this was the natural way of the world.

The head of the Skylark slowly slid off of its body, causing blood to spray out like a fountain.

As the Skylark’s life quickly faded away from its eyes, it still didn’t utter a single cry or showed any signs of resistance. The once mighty ruler of the Garden had finally fallen.

Lake didn’t think much of it and simply grabbed the strand of fate above its head.

With the sound of the system notification going off, Lake looked forward to receiving another wave of points.

[Detected that the Host has come in contact with an Overlord’s fate. Beginning the absorption process...]

[Absorption complete.]

[+2000 RP Points]

[RP Points = 4023.567]

When the system message appeared in front of him, Lake was slightly stunned by the amount of RP he had gained.

Compared to the Wolf King who was only around the middle levels of Rank Three, the Skylark was a creature that had already entered the Peak level of Rank Three and was even a step away from reaching Rank Four.

With that kind of power it was reasonable for the Skylark to be worth far more than any normal Rank Three creature like the Wolf King.

Either way, Lake was still extremely happy with his harvest.

Since he didn’t have anything left to do in the rift, Lake turned around ready to walk through the portal. However, to his surprise, another set of system notifications came up, catching him completely off guard.
