Chapter 179: Chapter 179: First Mission (2)
A few minutes later, Lake entered the transfer station, now fully suited and equipped. As he walked, he adjusted the various pieces of equipment hidden all over his body.
He wore a sleek, form-fitting black suit that seemed to blend into the shadows. The high collar transitioned into a full-face mask with a hood over it, leaving only his eyes exposed. A streamlined, reinforced vest hugged his chest and shoulders, with concealed compartments and integrated holsters. He had two specialized pistols in his holsters and several throwing knives and blades hidden all over his body.
His gloves and boots were also seemingly designed for silent movement and quick, lethal strikes. The entire outfit exuded an aura of lethal efficiency, which started to give Lake an idea of his purpose here.
As Lake walked up to the teleporter in the center of the station, he saw Liam, who was looking at him with an appraising glance.
Lake couldn’t help but ask, looking into his gaze, "Did you prepare this because of what Gwen told you?"
"Mhm." Liam nodded with an appreciative look on his face, almost as if he were pleased to see how well everything fitted Lake.
"Does this have anything to do with what I’ve been called here for?"
"Yep."
"Almost all of these weapons aren’t suited for hunting beasts, so can I assume that I’ll be fighting something else?" Lake looked at Liam with a calm yet questioning gaze.
"You’re quick to catch on, aren’t you?" Liam smiled like a fox as he beckoned Lake up to the teleporter. "Come on, we don’t have that much time, so I’ll explain more on the move."
Lake sighed before walking up to the teleporter as the nearby guard started operating it.
"I’ll let you know now, but I’m not that good with these sort of things," Lake said as his face darkened. He was already bracing himself for what was to come.
"Hm? What do you mean?" Liam turned over inquisitively, but before Lake could reply, they had already been transferred away.

"BAHAHAHA!"
The loud laughter of Liam sounded out in a small alleyway outside of the West Gate City transfer station.
Lake, who was leaning on the wall with his face pale, felt his eyes twitch when he heard Liam’s laughter. He had just vomited out his life, yet here Liam was, having the time of his life, reveling in his misery.
’This is why I hate transfer stations...’ Lake thought to himself as he suddenly realized something. ’Would you look at that? I think this might be the first time I genuinely hated something that wasn’t related to a role. I guess I’m still chang-’
"Hurp!" Lake’s thinking was interrupted by another wave of nausea.
As Liam watched Lake struggle to recover, he couldn’t help but speak as he wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes. "Haha, I must say, Lake, you’ve certainly surprised me tonight!"
"Pfft-" Even as Liam spoke, he couldn’t help but struggle to restrain his laughter. "But you better hurry up and recover, we still have to make a move."
Lake gave Liam the side-eye from his bent-over position. Taking a deep breath, he somehow managed to cast a recovery spell on himself, despite the pain.
Seeing Lake get up from his position, Liam smiled brighter than ever before as he spoke, "Are you ready to move?"
"Yes," Lake replied, half-exhausted, as he wiped the saliva from the corner of his mouth. "Where are we even going?"
"Up." Liam pointed a finger to the sky as he smiled. In the next instance, his figure vanished out of Lake’s view, causing his nausea to flare up again.
"Hah, don’t tell me you’re getting sick on me again?" Liam’s voice came from atop the roof of the building next to them.
Lake looked up for a moment as his expression continued to darken.
’I have a feeling I’m not going to enjoy tonight...’
****
In the center of the city, two figures streaked through the night sky across the tall rooftops.
"Hah, are you going to start explaining to me what we’re doing here now?" Lake asked as he relied on his Parkour Skill to keep up with Liam’s speed. Thankfully, he managed to get over the initial rift sickness, but the thought of having to go through that process again when they had to return plagued his mind.
"Hm, tell me, Lake, how much do you know about the inner workings of our law system?" Liam asked as his expression became more somber.
"I know that it’s managed by the security bureau, who’s responsible for dealing with all kinds of crimes committed inside a city."
"Then do you know how we treat criminals?"
"They’re usually sent to jail." Lake frowned as he replied. He didn’t know where Liam was trying to go with this conversation.
"Then, do you know what we do with martial artists? After all, no prison or building in the world is equipped to house such dangerous individuals yet."
Suddenly, Lake seemed to understand something as his expression became tranquil. He finally figured out what all the equipment he had been given was for.
"They’re eliminated." Liam didn’t wait for Lake to reply, answering the question himself.
Lake sighed as he heard this, but quickly moved on. "Then why am I being brought here?"
Liam stopped as he heard Lake’s words. In front of them stood a towering skyscraper in the center of the city. At a glance, it seemed to be a hotel.
"Let me ask you something, Lake. How much do you know about assassins?" Liam spoke slowly, his narrowed eyes scanning the building.
"...I know that they’re a rarity. Only one in a thousand, as most hunters specialize in using bigger weapons and increasing their power and defense to hunt bigger monsters."
"That’s right, assassins aren’t suited to hunting big monsters in most cases. Our weapons and attack styles are more suited toward targeting smaller prey." Liam spoke calmly as he turned to look at Lake. His usually narrowed eyes now opened as they stared at him.
"Lake, I’ve seen your entrance exam video. I’ve lived a long time—a lot longer than you’d expect—and during that time, I’ve seen many different types of people and martial artists. Some are proud, others are humble, and the majority of them are hotblooded. It’s the calm and composed ones that you rarely see. You, however, Lake, are even more unique and different than any of them. In the video, you exhibited traits of composure that were on the level of being inhumane. You were calm, cold, calculative, and manipulative. You showed the mindset and talents of a perfect assassin—no, a perfect killer."
"..." Lake didn’t speak. He knew exactly what Liam meant if he was bringing up word of his entrance exam video, and he wouldn’t be the first to notice...
"That’s why I want to test you today. Are you really just a talented assassin, or are you perhaps something more dangerous?" As Liam spoke, he pointed a finger towards a certain floor near the top of the skyscraper. "Inside that building is a wanted criminal. During a recent arrest attempt, it was revealed that he is a martial artist. He has a track record of seven murders, two counts of assault, and over twenty confirmed cases of armed robbery. The police have tried multiple times to capture him but have failed thus far, so he has now fallen under our jurisdiction: the Execution Department."
"As part of your punishment and as a test, I want you to go in and neutralize the threat." Liam said seriously, his gem-like blue eyes seemingly staring right through Lake.
