Chapter 143: Chapter 143: Death Was Impossible With Me There
A bead of sweat trickled down Kate’s forehead as she observed the pack of wolves, their numbers seeming to grow incessantly.
Even after battling for over twenty minutes, she had failed to subdue even half of them. Wolves continued to pour in from the surrounding woods. Her initial estimation of their numbers seemed to be completely wrong.
Judging by the rapidly evolving situation, she estimated there were at least a hundred wolves residing within these hills! The thought sent a chill racing down her spine.
An army of such caliber could easily overpower an average team of Martial Warriors, especially if led by the Alpha Wolf. But that wasn’t the most terrifying realization Kate had come to.
"Why are these wolves so damn intelligent?" Kate cursed under her breath. She had tried to separate and pick them off one by one, but the pack of wolves seemed to have caught onto her tactics and was now making a conscious effort to stick together.
The pressure on Kate and her team had increased dramatically after the wolves figured out her strategy. While Kate could endure due to her vastly superior fitness index, the same couldn’t be said for the rest of the team.
Everyone except Sylph was only marginally superior to a single wolf in terms of overall fitness index, and they were already struggling to subdue the wolves without killing them.
Bramble, who had initially been darting around the battlefield, fighting wolves individually, was now finding it difficult to deal with them as they banded together. His stamina was also being rapidly exhausted as time went on.
In contrast to Martial Artists, the fairies didn’t rely on mana to fight and couldn’t restore their stamina by merely burning their mana.
Iris continued to protect Sylph, but more and more wolves were closing in on them. At this rate, Kate doubted they could hold on much longer without resorting to killing the wolves.
Romero, hidden in a tree, carefully observed the situation. He was ready to intervene at the moment he sensed that the group couldn’t continue, but in his mind, he couldn’t help but marvel at everyone’s strength.
The fairies were still a marvel to him, so he wasn’t too surprised by their combat prowess, but Kate was only a regular human. For her to have achieved the status of a Martial Warrior at her age, not to mention a high-ranking one, was unheard of.
However, even with Kate’s impressive martial achievements, she still couldn’t compare to the "monster" he saw chasing a wolf into the woods. Even from that distance, Romero could hear the alpha wolf’s cries.
"Hm? The screams have ceased..." Romero’s gaze sharpened as he peered into the distant woods.
"Awoooo!" A loud howl reverberated throughout the intense battlefield, startling both Kate and the wolves.
Boom!
Before anyone could react, the Alpha Wolf materialized on the battlefield with a deafening sonic boom. Its once green fur had turned a dark crimson red, and its emerald eyes scanned the battlefield with a sharp glare.
"ROAR!" With a resounding roar, a sonic blast was unleashed from the Alpha Wolf’s mouth.
Kate took a step back in response as everyone gathered around her.
"Where’s Lake?" Sylph inquired with a worried expression after seeing the Alpha Wolf return without Lake.
"Now’s not the time to dwell on that. Prepare to run," Kate replied as her eyes darkened, "We can’t win with the Alpha here."
Despite her own concerns, Kate hadn’t forgotten that she was now responsible for everyone’s lives and wasn’t willing to stick around to fight a Rank Two creature.
After hearing their leader’s command, all the wolves positioned themselves around him as they faced Kate and her team.
"Grrrrr..."
Looking at the large pack of wolves, now fully organized and baring their teeth under the leadership of the Alpha Wolf, Kate’s senses were on high alert, ready to react at a moment’s notice.
At that moment, when all the wolves were aggressively staring down Kate and the fairies, rustling could be heard from some bushes between the two groups.
Kate’s already alert senses caused here to turn almost instinctively as her sharp eyes narrowed. However, when she saw a figure emerge from the shrubbery, her narrowed eyes widened in relief.
"He made it after all..."
....
"Lake!" Sylph shouted in surprise as Lake emerged from the woods.
"What took you so long?" Kate asked.
"What? I thought you could handle at least this much," Lake responded with a sarcastic tone, a smile on his face. "The Alpha Wolf was a lot more stubborn than I expected, so it took a little longer than planned to convince him."
"..? What are you two talking about? You do realize we’re still surrounded right?!" Iris, who was still trying to defend Sylph, was furious when she heard Kate and Lake start to talk casually in front of the enemy.
"Grrr..." As if responding to her outburst, the wolves also stepped forward, ready to attack at a moment’s notice.
Lake took a glance at Iris before turning to face the wolves, "There’s no need to worry about the wolves anymore."
Iris was still confused even after hearing Lake’s words, but Bramble, who had been observing quietly all this time, had already spotted some clues as to what was going on.
Looking at the bloody body of the Alpha Wolf and the almost pristine condition of Lake, he had a terrifying guess as to what had happened. For now, however, he continued to watch in silence, curious about what Lake was planning.
Lake’s gaze remained fixed on the Alpha Wolf, as if the pack of ferocious wolves surrounding them were invisible.
"Ruff!" A wolf that couldn’t sit still anymore rushed forward, a few more following behind him.
"BARK!"
However, before those wolves could even move a few steps forward, a thunderous bark from their Alpha stopped them in their tracks.
Lake smiled when he saw this, as he could see the visible agitation in the Alpha Wolf’s eyes.
"Bow." He spoke one word that caused his team to look at him in confusion, but what they saw next left them completely shocked.
"This..." Kate’s eyes widened in astonishment.
Bramble and Iris couldn’t even speak, while Sylph looked on in amazement.
The pack of wolves, initially bewildered by their leader’s order to halt, now gazed at him with vacant expressions.
"...."
The hill fell into a profound silence.
Looking at the Alpha Wolf, who had silently bowed down in a resigned manner, everyone was experiencing different levels of shock.
Kate had long expected it, so she didn’t feel too shocked when she saw Lake take control of the Alpha Wolf, but she was more surprised by how easily the two communicated.
Although she knew that the Alpha Wolf was intelligent, she didn’t expect it to understand Lake’s command so well.
Just one word, and it already bowed down.
Sylph and the rest were also taken aback when they saw Lake control the Alpha Wolf, but were able to quickly recover. They had seen many people with similar abilities in their original world, so Lake’s ability wasn’t anything special in their eyes. It was just surprising for them to see it here.
However, the person who was feeling the most shock out of the current situation was Romero, whose heart rate was rapidly rising.
"No, it can’t be, he’s only a student... The guy in the rift seemed older, but then again, I didn’t see his face, so I can’t say for certain..."
"But the similarities between the two..."
"He was also able to control beasts, and that stealth skill is almost unheard of..."
As these thoughts filled Romero’s head, the figure of Lake seemed to overlap with the one in his mind.
"I’ll have to check to be sure..." Romero’s eyes were now locked on Lake, who was still casually looking at the pack of wolves in front of him.
Lake himself didn’t utter a word, but a simple glance at the Alpha Wolf prompted it to release another commanding bark.
"!"
Surprised by the sudden roar, the wolves looked to their leader, confused by his orders.
However, when they met the bloodshot eyes of their leader, they all shivered before helplessly bowing down as well.
Looking at the army of wolves, all bowing down before him, Lake couldn’t help but remember a line he had heard from a long time ago.
"The Lone King without a Kingdom."
It was what the Spider Empress used to describe him when he made the King’s Pact a while ago. Although he was still far off from creating a Kingdom, the foundations were slowly being built.
If he could establish his Kingdom before the one-year deadline, he would have another trump card up his sleeve to deal with whatever disaster was coming his way.
....
After Lake organized and settled the wolves, everyone quickly surrounded him.
"I had no idea your a Beast Tamer, Lake!" Sylph exclaimed, her smile lighting up her face.
Hearing her words, Lake raised an eyebrow. "Beast Tamer? Was that a profession in your world?"
"Mhm! It was one of the rarer professions among all the races, as not everyone had the ability to control beasts." Sylph nodded as she explained with a light smile.
"Speaking of that, how did you manage to control the Alpha Wolf? You said it was stubborn, so how did you manage to convince it?" Kate suddenly asked, curious about how Lake did it.
"You’re curious about that? Well, it’s not anything special. I just used poison after beating it up a lot."
"...?"
Instead of answering everyone’s confusion, Lake’s answer only made them more confused.
Seeing that they still didn’t understand, Lake explained a little more, "I used some poison I had on me on the Alpha Wolf and convinced it that I had the antidote. Since I beat it up a lot, it didn’t think of resisting."
"Then, couldn’t it have just chosen to die at that point...?" Iris was the one to ask this question as Lake’s method truly baffled her.
As far as she was concerned, most powerful animals would usually fight until the end even if they knew better, as they’d rather die than submit.
"Hmm, let’s just say... death was impossible with me there."
"???"
