Chapter 131: Chapter 131: Am I likeable?
In the woods behind the arena, Lake was currently setting up the Mana Gathering Formation.
When he first analyzed the land, he had come up with the most optimal formation he could create with the materials he had.
Various beast parts were being crushed and melted under Lake’s magical spells before being forged into unique parts and pieces that were scattered around the area.
It was currently two in the morning and Lake was still working on the formation.
Setting up a proper large scale formation took a significant amount of time and would normally bore any other mage to death but Lake enjoyed the process.
He already had the qualities of an excellent mage with a burning passion for magic instilled in his mind so spending more than eight hours straight working on the formation was more of a joy than a chore to him.
"Elemental negation set, non-magical filter set, mana calibrators are at optimal conditions, geographical coverage has reached the maximum distance, illusion and invisibility sub formations are ready..."
"Good. Everything is in order."
Lake sighed to himself after double checking everything.
Although he enjoyed the process and gained a few RP points from it, Lake still felt exhausted after everything was done.
If it wasn’t for his Mana Heart constantly replenishing his mana, it would have taken him several days to finish everything he did in one night.
After stretching a bit, he returned to the center of the training grounds.
The grounds were currently pitch black. He was far away from the academy’s main buildings so there wasn’t any light to illuminate the area.
The moon was hidden behind clouds with only a few beams of light cascading down onto the world.
Luckily, Lake’s night vision had improved tremendously after upgrading his Sixth Sense, so the darkness didn’t affect him.
Crouching down, Lake placed his palms on the grounds.
Vroom!
The dark surroundings were suddenly illuminated by a bright blue light as mana flared out from Lake’s body.
Most of the mana was flowing into the ground spreading through thin lines hidden underneath the earth’s surface.
Whoosh!
As the mana continued to travel through the underground channels, multiple beams of dazzling blue light were lighting up one after another surrounding Lake.
The lights spread out in a spiral with Lake at the center, bringing an illustrious brightness to the dark woods for more than a few miles.
Luckily it was the middle of the night and Lake had already checked the surroundings to make sure that there was no one nearby.
Vroom!
His mana was draining faster than his Mana Heart could recover as the formation continued to light up.
Just when he felt his mana was about to run dry, the last part of the formation lit up in the distance with a bright light.
Thud!
Lake collapsed on the ground as he gasped for air.
The lights in the distances slowly started to fade away as the darkness of the night quietly returned to the surroundings.
"Phew..."
Lake breathed out as he felt a subtle change in the environment.
The mana density and purity still felt the same without any noticeable difference, however, Lake could sense a strong flow, almost like a current, rushing through the ground and covering the sky.
Mana was slowly being lured in before flowing along it.
As the mana moved across the current, it passed through several barriers before being released again into the surroundings.
Lake couldn’t get an accurate feel on the mana yet but seeing that the current was working as intended, he knew that the formation had been successfully activated.
If he wanted to see a noticeable change, he would have to return later in the evening.
With another sigh, Lake jumped back up to his feet.
His Mana Heart had already absorbed enough mana for him to move around again in that short time.
If Lake let it run for a few more minutes, he would be fully recovered.
However, expending and rapidly recovering mana drained Lake more mentally than physically.
Feeling tired, he made sure that the invisibility formation that hid everything was working properly before returning to his dorm.
....
The next day, Lake woke up after four hours of sleep.
Although he was still exhausted, he still had classes to attend.
The sound of his wristwatch was ringing out notification after notification had also helped in forcing him out of bed.
Before their hunt, Landur had added Lake to their group chat since he was going to be a part of the team.
They originally didn’t message each other that much since they were busy preparing for their hunt, but now that they had returned and had a few days to rest before their next hunt, they had started to use the group chat again.
After reading through a few messages and realizing that it was mostly random information, Lake didn’t bother to continue reading and muted the chat.
When he had time he would go through them in case there was some important announcement, like when their next hunt was, but for now he left it alone.
Entering their bustling classroom, Lake saw that everyone was still as noisy as ever.
It had been almost a month since Lake started attending the academy and a lot had happened in that short period of time.
There was the arrival of the fairies, the sudden quest, the training program he created to complete the quest, the Lizardmen hunt, and the terrorist attack by Prestige.
Thinking of all these events, Lake felt even more exhausted and sat down and placed his head on the desk.
Closing his eyes, he wanted to rest a bit more before class started.
Flutter!
However, it didn’t seem like he would be given that chance...
Lazily raising his head, Lake looked at the curious face of the annoying fairy in front of him.
Her wings were fluttering behind her back making a soft noise that prevented Lake from resting in peace.
If it was anyone else, Lake would’ve just ignored them, but the group of fairies were considered a special existence in the academy. Lake couldn’t do anything that would cause them to be upset unless he wanted to have the teachers calling him out.
"...Good day to you, Miss Sylph."
"Mhn! Good day to you too, Mr. Lake!"
"Any reason why you’re suddenly calling me Mr. Lake?"
"It’s because you keep calling me Miss Sylph!"
"Doesn’t everyone else call you Miss Sylph too?"
"Not anymore. After I got to know them, most people just call me Sylph."
"Is that so? So what do you want, Miss Sylph."
"Hmph!" Sylph pouted her cheeks as she turned away.
Lake saw this but honestly didn’t care.
"If there is nothing else, would you mind allowing me to rest in peace, Miss Sylph?"
"...."
Sylph didn’t say anything and only continued to look the other way in front of him.
Lake sighed when he saw this.
"Is there anything you need, Sylph?"
This time Sylph turned back to look at him.
’What a needy child.’ Lake silently thought.
"...No, not really, I just wanted to say hi."
Lake’s mouth twitched slightly but he didn’t complain and was about to send her off but suddenly thought of something.
"Miss- Sylph, since you’re here, there was something that I was curious about."
Lake almost messed up again but quickly corrected himself.
When Sylph heard that Lake wanted to ask something of her, she was extremely curious about what it was.
"Sure, I’ll answer it if I can." Sylph nodded her head.
"Did the fairies always speak our continent’s language."
Hearing his question, Sylph nodded her head knowingly. It wasn’t the first time that someone asked her that question so she already had the answer.
"No. My people and I spoke the Elvish Language before we met the humans."
"Hmm? Elvish? Were there elves where you came from by chance?"
"Yes. The elves and my people originally shared a close bond but we were unfortunately separated by the rifts."
"I see..." Lake had a thoughtful expression on his face, "But you certainly speak our language fluently for someone who wouldn’t have known about it until a few months ago."
"Hehe, that’s because we Fairies received the blessing of language, allowing us to understand and speak any language in the world."
"Huh?"
This time Lake was completely shocked.
"You could speak any language? Regardless of which world it originates from?"
"That’s right!" Sylph said as she patted her chest with a confident smile.
Lake leaned back in his chair with a stunned expression. He had thought it was weird that Sylph and the other fairies seemed so proficient in his world’s language, but he didn’t think much of it at the time.
It was only after he met the demons did he start to consider the factor of language barriers.
"...Then, this blessing of language, how does it work?" Lake asked with a gleam in his eyes.
"Fufu, interested now are you?"
Sylph seemed slightly pleased that Lake was finally interested in talking.
"The blessing of language is just that, a blessing that allows the Fairies to communicate with other races."
"When the humans first found us inside the rift, it was thanks to this blessing that we were able to communicate so easily and get on friendly terms."
"So that’s how it was. Then what about the acquisition? Can anyone get it or is it only unique to the fairies?"
"That’s... a bit complicated. Other races can indeed get the blessing of language but like, it is way~ too difficult of a feat to accomplish." Sylph said as she made an exaggerated motion with her hands.
"How’s that so? What do they need in order to get it?"
"Well, that is also complicated to explain. If I had to say exactly what you would need to get it... it would be that you need to be... likable?"
Sylph spoke with a frown as if she was trying to figure it out herself.
"Well then... am I likable?" At this point Lake didn’t know what he was saying anymore.
Every time he talked to Sylph, he felt his intelligence being seriously questioned.
He even started to wonder if stupidity was contagious.
"I... guess?"
"???"
Sylph’s answer left Lake even more dumbfounded.
"Then, can I get the blessing?"
"...I don’t know."
Lake’s mouth twitched at the slightly familiar answer.
"Being well liked is only the basic requirements. The others are more whimsical and depend more on the fate of the individual."
When he heard her words, Lake felt like a bolt of lightning had struck him.
"Did you just say... fate?"
"Yeah, it’s kind of like the blessing comes to those that are fated kind of thing!"
Sylph seemed to have recovered her mood as she went back to smiling as if she just found the answer she was looking for and didn’t have to worry about it anymore.
"Then... I am fated?"
Lake felt the last strand of his intelligence disappear in an instance as he said something completely nonsensical.
He knew he was being optimistic, but he was the Master of Fate and had absolute control over it. However, he was also someone who existed outside of fate, uncontrolled and free from its restraint.
When he said he was fated, he was just trying to see if he could possibly activate the condition by just saying he was fated.
Normally he would never entertain such a dumb and wishful idea, but with Sylph next to him, he felt like his intelligence had gone on vacation, allowing himself to open up to the realm of infinite stupid possibilities.
Click!
"Hm? Did you hear something?"
"No?"
Sylph tilted her head as she looked at Lake.
Lake on the other hand was starting to question his sanity after questioning his intelligence.
’I must have heard something from afar... Damn, I really need to separate myself from this nuclear weapon. She even throws off my senses.’
