Chapter 129: Magic Pong

Chapter 129: Chapter 129: Magic Pong

Lake and Kate made their way to the training hall, but before they even entered, they could already hear several explosions ringing out from the inside.

Before Lake went on his hunt, he had left an assignment for each of the students.

These assignments were designed to improve their control over mana, which would allow them to perform more complex and more difficult activities that would ultimately speed up their progression.

Since he wasn’t around to guide them personally, he was hoping these assignments would give them the push they needed so that he could speed up the completion of his mission.

He even included a game they could play once they completed the assignments to keep them motivated.

However, hearing the explosions coming from inside the hall, he thought they may have taken his game a little too seriously.

As the training hall’s door swung open, Lake smiled at the sight inside.

BANG!

"Fuck!"

"Haha! Looks like dinner is on you, loser!"

BANG!

"Noooooo!"

"Tsk! Tsk! You dared to challenge me with only this level of skill? Looks like you need some more training, little one."

BANG!

"I won! hahaha!"

"Shit. Just beginner’s luck, come, let’s go again. I can’t have you getting cocky on me now."

BANG!

Among the shouts of victory and defeat echoed throughout the hall, Lake walked in, his presence hidden by the sound of explosions.

No one seemed to be paying attention to him or Kate as they were all focused on either their own matches, or watching an ongoing one.

Lake didn’t wish to make a scene and walked to the sidelines, choosing to observe one of the matches that was about to start.

On a stage a small distance away from him were two Sacred Class students who were about to start a match.

One of the students was one of the boys who usually hung out in the corner of their class.

His name was Conner and he used a spear. He was also one of the boys that had wanted to jump Lake but ultimately decided against it.

The other student was one of the girls in their class. Her name was Fiona and Lake remembered that she specialized in movement skills and used a sword.

However, regardless of whatever weapon they used, they were both currently unarmed and standing on opposite sides of the arena.

Conner held a black metallic ball in his hands as he looked at Fiona with a grin.

"Hehe, I didn’t expect you to agree to my duel."

"Hmph, what’s the big deal? If I lose, it’s just a small little date with you, but if you lose you’re going to have to sponsor the girls’ party. Why wouldn’t I take such an advantageous gamble?" Fiona relied as she smiled mockingly.

"That’s right, you better beat this traitorous scum!"

"Dares to think just because he has a little skill he could get a date before his brothers! Beat his ass!"

"Death to the traitor!"

Offstage, the rest of the boys were shouting out with bloodthirsty eyes.

"Beat him down, sis!"

"Don’t give him a chance to even react!"

"After you win, let’s order the sweets we’ve been eyeing on the menu!"

On the other side, the Sacred Class girls were shouting out.

Lake and Kate who were watching from the sidelines felt slightly amazed at the situation.

On Lake’s side, never did he expect that his little game would be used for something like this.

On Kate’s side, she was questioning the intelligence of the boy who dared to risk his points just for a date with a girl.

’Is her charm just that good? Could I do something like this too?’

Kate pondered as she compared herself to the girl on stage. However, after only a few seconds, her face turned slightly dark.

Although Kate was quite good looking herself, Fiona was definitely a few more points ahead, with long brown hair tied up in a ponytail, gorgeous green eyes and a perfect figure.

Kate instantly regretted trying to compare herself but she quickly recomposed herself.

"Is something wrong?" Lake asked, having noticed Kate’s split second of discomposure.

"No."

"If you say so."

Seeing that Kate was fine, Lake returned his attention to the stage. Conner and Fiona seemed to be ready to start their match.

Both of them silently enveloped their hands in mana as Conner threw the metallic ball up into the sky.

The game Lake created was fairly simple.

It was called Magic Pong and involved two people hitting a ball back and forth between each other with their mana enhanced palms.

Normally, for a Martial Artists, such an activity could be done for hours on end without a clear victor between the two, however, Lake had added a little twist to the game.

The ball used in the game was made out of an extremely heavy metal but was hollow on the inside.

If one used too little mana to enhance their palms, the ball would drop to the ground after flying away with a loud thud.

If one used too much mana, the hollow structure of the ball would cause it to crack and explode with a loud boom.

The idea of the game was to keep perfect control of the mana on the palm while not over using your mana as to not run out of it midway through the match.

Without control, one would lose the game.

As for where he got the resources to create the almost endless supply of metal balls, he had originally gotten the support of the academy for his training program. Paired with the benefits of the game, it wasn’t that hard to convince them to lend some assistance.

Lake’s original goal was for the students to improve their control further through competition against each other.

He came up with this method after understanding exactly how the teachers of the Academy kept their students motivated, and from what he was seeing, it seemed to be working just as intended.

Boom!

With a solid slap, Conner sent the ball flying towards Fiona.

To prevent people from just aiming the ball too far away from the opponent to where they simply couldn’t reach it, one of the rules of the game was to always aim within five feet of the opponent.

Lake saw that to implement this rule better, the students had set up miniature goal posts behind each side of the stage.

If the ball passed through the goal post, it would be considered the loss of the defender.

Boom!

With a flick of her wrist, Fiona sent the ball flying back towards Conner.

They were sending the ball back and forth between each other, causing small explosions to sound out repeatedly.

Although they may have made it look easy, the ball they were hitting was still made out of metal and if the two of them weren’t martial artists and didn’t have mana surrounding their palms, one would be considered lucky to walk away from this game with only a broken palm.

As the match went on, Conner seemed to be the one taking the upper hand as he had a relatively more relaxed control of his mana.

Fiona had to combine both her movement techniques and her palm strikes to keep up.

Everyone watched on in silent excitement, too worried to make a noise causing one of them to slip up and fail... Well, all except for one particular group of boys who would shout out whenever the ball came flying towards Conner’s side.

"AHHH!"

"BOO!"

"Drop the ball already, trash!"

Lake could see veins popping up on Conner’s forehead but he was still holding on despite his "brothers" taunts.

As the two continued the match however, Conner was the first to slip up.

He was fine with the taunts at first until one of the boys offstage dared to start talking about an embarrassing story from his past.

In that small moment of agitation, he accidently hit the ball back with too much force, causing a loud boom as one side of the ball caved in slightly with cracks appearing on the other end.

However, the ball still hadn’t shattered completely so he was still in the match.

That one slip up seemed to have left him flustered however, as he was panicking slightly on the inside.

Fiona seemed to notice this as an idea appeared in her mind.

With a beautiful smile, she looked at Conner before mouthing something with a flirtatious gaze.

Conner who saw this was momentarily stunned, allowing Fiona to send the metal ball flying right past him and into the goal post.

BANG!

Just like that, Fiona claimed victory in this short yet meaningful match.

Conner dropped to his knees knowing that he had lost.

Fiona walked up to him before crouching down with a smile on her face.

Conner still had a stunned look on his face as he looked at Fiona’s radiant smile.

"D-did you mean what you just said?"

"Who knows? Just make sure to show up to buy our food tonight."

With a light giggle, Fiona left after whispering in Conner’s ears.

"Haha! We told you that you were overreaching by aiming for a girlfriend before your bros."

"Tsk! You should have listened to us when we were explaining to you, bro. You could have avoided losing all these points."

"Yeah bro, don’t you know how valuable points are?"

Hearing the "caring" words of his brothers, Conner slowly got up.

He walked with slumped shoulders and his head down as he sighed.

He looked quite down, causing the rest of the boys to feel a little bad as they watched Conner walk towards a certain corner of the training hall.

"Hey, bro, listen to us, you can get her next time!"

"That’s right bro, we’ll support you in your endeavors."

"Yeah, we’ll even put up some of our points for the party... Hey wait! What are you doing with that spear?!"

"Put the spear down bro, let’s talk this out like civilized men!"

"Conner! Conner! Listen to us, calm down boy, calm down!"

Conner hearing the cries of his brothers laughed slightly with an evil gaze in his eyes.

"You fuckers are dead."

"Shit, he’s gone mad! Run for it!"

As the group of boys continued with their antics, Lake and Kate had already left the training hall.
