Chapter 108: Unexpected Surprise
Chapter 108: Chapter 108: Unexpected Surprise
After the Lizard King was killed, everyone regrouped and took the chance to rest.
Gwen’s mana was almost exhausted after the battle, while Lake, Jayce and Landur were injured.
Out of everyone, Hana could be the one said to come out on top in terms of least tired or injured.
It was also because of this that she was turned into the group’s personal nurse.
"Ow- Hey! Watch where you’re touching!"
"Right now I’m in charge of treating you so just shut up and take it. Aren’t you a man, Landur? This little bit of pain shouldn’t be much to you, right?"
"The pain isn’t the problem. I just feel that you’re doing this intentionally."
"On what evidence?"
"Oh I don’t know, how about- Ow! Hey! You did it again!"
"Alright, that’s enough you two. Hana, go treat Jayce next." Gwen couldn’t watch the two continue to bicker much longer so she sent Hana to treat another.
"Fine." Hana replied as she got up and walked over to Jayce.
"Landur, check and see if the Lizardmen meat is edible."
Watching everyone work together like this, Lake smiled as he silently recovered.
Compared to everyone else, he had the fastest recovery rate using his Mana Heart.
With the mana flowing through his body, his strength continued to recover while he occasionally casted some heal spells to seal up the wounds covering his body.
After they killed the Lizard King, Lake was still vigilant of his surroundings.
Besides the Lizardmen, the Night Wolf was still somewhere in the mountains so Lake didn’t dare let his guard down.
Although he and his team had mostly sustained minor injuries and exhausted their mana, everyone still kept a small portion of mana reserved so that they could escape if needed.
There was also the fact that Lake had constantly kept an eye on the fate of everyone around him. Luckily there wasn’t anything interesting showing in their near future, that alone was enough for Lake as it at least guaranteed that they weren’t in any immediate danger.
Only after considering both of these factors did Lake decide to take the risk and fight the Lizard King despite the Night Wolf’s location being unknown.
"Hey guys, most of the Lizardmen meat is edible, it’s just that the Lizardmen seem to be extremely muscular so tonight’s meal is going to be chewy."
At this point, Landur who was checking out the Lizardmen finally spoke after thoroughly inspecting the body of a Lizardmen.
"What about the Lizard King?" Jayce suddenly asked as he looked at the large corpse of the fallen Lizard King next to them.
"That’s a no go. A regular Lizardmen could already be considered quite muscular and would already be difficult to cook. The Lizard King, who was even stronger than them and had far firmer muscles... I’m afraid it isn’t a matter of if I could cook it, but whether you could even chew it after I do."
"It’s fine. We’ll just eat the regular Lizardmen then." Gwen finally spoke and gave the final decision.
With his orders received, Landur quickly got to work as he started gathering some materials in the nearby surroundings to start a small fire.
Seeing how casually Gwen gave out orders and how everyone moved in a strangely in sync motion, Lake couldn’t help but ask although he knew the answer to it.
"Do you guys do this all the time?"
When everyone heard this, they looked as if they had suddenly realized something as Jayce laughed.
"Sorry, junior. We forgot that you’re new to this. This is how we handle all our post battle operations."
"We check the meat of the creatures we kill. If they’re edible, then we feast! If not, then we starve."
Hearing Jayce’s explanation, Lake nodded his head.
He already knew all of this from observing their fate but he didn’t know anything about their personal thoughts on the matter so he voiced his doubts.
"Honestly junior, when you reach your third year, you’ll come to understand why we’re like this. This is especially true since you’re already strong enough to match up to us even though you’re in your first year."
"Hehe, I feel that he’ll have it much worse than us actually." Landur also chipped in while he picked up some broken branches nearby.
"That’s true!" Hana’s eyes lit up as if she suddenly realized something, "Not only is he already strong enough to match up to us in his first year, he even has a High Rank Martial Warrior in his class. I’m afraid with the way those devils operate, he’ll be suffering more than us before he even reaches his second year!"
Hearing this, Landur and Jayce, who were listening, sucked in a breath of cold air.
"That’s right, besides already having Lake, the first years also have the awakened genius..."
"I’m sorry junior, I didn’t realize just how much you’ll have to go through... You have my condolences."
Seeing how everyone already looked at him with pitiful gaze, Lake couldn’t help but wonder what they would be like if they knew he planned to create a hundred more versions of said genius.
"Alright, that’s enough. Instead of worrying about the future, let’s focus on the present. How did you find your first hunt was, Lake?" Gwen asked.
"Hmm... I guess it was simpler than I expected."
"That’s a reasonable first impression. Most people tend to overthink how hard a hunt could be. In reality, as long as everyone fulfills their roles, hunts normally aren’t that difficult."
"Of course, there are exceptions. For example, the Lizard King’s unexpected appearance caused us quite a lot of trouble and if it wasn’t for your... exceptional scouting abilities, we would have normally ended the hunt right their after finding an unidentified beast."
"Your first exam is coming up, isn’t it? If I remember correctly it should be a team based hunt similar to this one, of course on a much lesser scale and in a controlled environment, however, it should be easy if you follow the general rules of just having everyone fulfill their roles."
Hearing this, Lake nodded his head, "Thank you for the advice. I’ll make sure to keep it in mind in the future."
Gwen only smiled slightly before remembering something, "Oh, and in the future, never pull something as risky as fight a creature above your rank. Although you could match up to a Low Tier Martial Warrior, you’re still only a Martial Apprentice. Taking unnecessary risks like you did tonight can often lead the entire team to being wiped out so refrain from doing so in the future."
Lake smiled slightly, "Alright."
At that time, Landur had just finished lighting the fire using the fire starter he brought.
....
After everyone finished their meals, they all returned to the city.
By the time they arrived at the city, the sun was already rising into the sky.
They were all covered in blood and dirt so everyone desperately wanted to hurry home to clean up. This was especially true for the girls in the team.
Thankfully, there weren’t many people out right now as the sun had only barely risen over the horizon. Otherwise, if anyone saw the blood covered Lake, they would have thought they saw a ghost.
Using their identities as students of the academy, they were able to board a public bus despite their messy appearance.
The bus owner would be compensated by the academy for the trouble so they didn’t care much about it.
Like that, they arrived at the teleport center unhindered.
....
"What do you mean the teleporter isn’t working?"
Everyone stood at the front of the reception desk as Gwen talked to the receptionist who was bowing apologetically.
"I’m sorry miss, but the teleporters are currently out of commission."
"How come?" Landur asked with a surprised expression.
"Due to the large number of visitors coming into the city in the past few days, the teleporter was overloaded and has stopped functioning for a short period of time. I’m sorry if this inconvenienced you in any way." The receptionist apologized again as she kept bowing again and again.
It seems that she was a little wary of the group as they had all walked in covered in blood and dirt.
Although she had seen a few hunters walk in like this before, they normally just left immediately so she never had to interact with them for long.
However, now that the teleporter wasn’t working, she had to deal with these people who normally wouldn’t spare her a glance and what terrified her the most, was the hunter in the back who was covered in blood from head to toe...
If it wasn’t for her professional ethics and training, she really would’ve been shivering in fear from just talking to these bunch of young hunters.
"When will the transfer station be up and running again?" Hana asked with a sudden glimmer in her eyes.
The receptionist saw the slightly excited expression on her face and was a little confused but she answered anyway.
"The teleporter was overloaded this time and repairs are estimated to take a while. For the latest, the repairs would be finished around tomorrow morning, a little after the end of the Moon Bright Festival."
When the receptionist said this, she was prepared to apologize again but instead was given a fright when she heard the excited shouts of the group in front of her.
"Hell yeah!" Jayce and Landur shouted out as they gave each other a high five.
Hana was restraining herself from jumping around as she smiled happily.
Gwen only smiled helplessly as Lake watched on from the back.
It seems that the group had just gotten an unexpected vacation.
