Chapter 73: Chapter 41: Rookie Convenience Store Robber (Part 3)

What is this place?

The boss lady faces a robbery like facing a customer, and customers facing a robbery just see another customer.

"I will shoot." The young man’s heartbeat gets faster, and the situation here is different from the movies. The good thing is that they do not seem to intend to call the police.

"Every robber I’ve encountered says that, and I’m still alive." Kim is very calm, still looking at her phone.

"I really will shoot."

Kim raises her head, placing the phone on the counter, "Kid, you’re a rookie."

"WHAT?" The young man wants to scream.

"Because your hands are shaking, rookie, and you came in looking at the cameras."

"Is it a mistake to look at the cameras?" If recorded, the police would catch you, the young man is somewhat bewildered.

"Kenny, won’t you teach the rookie a thing or two?" Kim is in a bad mood and starts eating instant noodles from the table.

Fack!

The young man looks at the noodle-eating boss lady, then at me, could you both cooperate a little?

"Kid, the angle of the camera makes it hard to get a clear shot of your facial features; if it’s not direct on, it won’t scan your face to confirm your identity."

"But it’s like that in TV shows," the young man exclaims.

"That’s TV, the cameras in TV shows are different from reality, color, perception, reflection, clarity, and visible range, all different.

No supermarket uses high-definition dynamic cameras inside, they’re too expensive.

Also, when robbing, what you need to cover are tattoos on your arms and thighs, chains on your neck, and the watch you’re wearing, those are the identifiable features that confirm your identity quickly. And also, don’t wear limited edition sneakers again.

Don’t buy a handgun from a gun shop, you got this one legally, right? So, you’re still a rookie, you need a weapon without a serial number."

As I speak, I also browse through the merchandise, this kid is truly a rookie.

"Son of a beach! My friend tricked me, he said robbing convenience stores and gas stations is easy." The young man is stunned, I just told him many things that can’t be learned from TV.

"Nothing is easy, you might come across different bosses, like a guy with an M870 shotgun under the counter who’ll blow you away. Or a guy with a Magnum in the drawer, or a guy carrying a Desert Eagle on him, or even someone with a Skorpion submachine gun in their bag.

Your first time meeting Kim, you’re lucky, at least you won’t get shot full of holes."

I walk over to the counter with a cup of instant noodles, unwrap it, and soak the noodles in hot water.

The young man is shocked again.

What’s this? A rookie robbery tutorial for convenience stores?

The young man’s mouth is open, and his body is trembling, Kim isn’t scared, neither am I, it’s as if robbery is a common event.

"Then what should I do?"

I look down at the noodles, pull out a cigarette, light it, and blow a puff of white smoke at the young man.

"Understand, this is the Upper East Side of Miami. The number one city for crime in the nation is Chicago, second is New York, third is Los Angeles, and fourth is Miami.

The city with the most gangs in the nation is Los Angeles first, New York second, and Miami third.

The city with the highest violent crime rates is Chicago first, Miami second, and Los Angeles third. Know why?"

The young man shakes his head, how the hell would I know!

"Because Miami is the largest drug smuggling route and transit point in the U.S.

Though San Diego in California is near Tijuana, Mexico, the city is smaller in scale.

The Everglades here in Miami are filled with drugs and dead bodies.

You’ve got drug lords here from all over Central and South America."

Fack! The young man listens intently, he was nervous before, now he’s even more tense.

"Our Upper East Side crime rate isn’t as high as downtown, but it’s surpassed Wynwood, and now because of the graffiti district and art center’s internet fame, Wynwood’s security has improved a lot. As the second most chaotic area in Miami, Kim faces robberies as if she’s seeing handsome guys."

"Fack!" The young man turns to look at the boss.

Kim eats instant noodles, scrolling on her phone, "Kid, I encounter fifty robberies a year. None of these bastards actually dare to shoot me."

That’s right, it’s rare for a robbery to shoot the store owner, killing someone over tens or hundreds of dollars and committing a serious felony, spending years in prison, no one’s willing to do it.

I lean against the freezer behind me, eating the noodles, this tonkotsu ramen tastes very plain.

"If you talk like this, Kim won’t be scared and won’t give you a single cent."

I swallow the noodles.

Kim looks at me, "Do you want him to rob me?"

"I’m trying to tell him if he’s not resolute, he should leave now. There isn’t much cash in convenience stores, supermarkets, or gas stations, there’s more in bars, and even more in clubs."

"But clubs have lots of gunmen, your guys will shoot him like a sieve."

I sip the soup, nodding, "Exactly, so without resolve, don’t rob. Kid, you’ll get hurt."

This guy has underlings?

The young man’s legs are trembling.

I check my watch, "You’ve got twenty-three minutes before a patrol car passes by. Kim is a good boss, please don’t hurt her, she didn’t call the police when you came in."

"You’re not planning to pay?" Kim drinks the noodle soup, wipes her mouth, and looks at me interestingly. Kim didn’t call the police, because involving the police often makes things worse.

Some people will say, it’s impossible.

No, this is reality, not a movie or TV show.

In reality, convenience store robberies have small losses, a few tens or a hundred US dollars.

If encountered by the police at that moment, it can turn into a shootout instead.

If someone gets caught, they might come back for revenge after being released.

Kim’s approach is different from the mainstream, but it’s a way to survive in high-crime areas.

She’s acquainted with most gang members in the Upper East Side, everyone knows she’s a good person.

So, she only gets robbed by rookies, because everyone else wouldn’t allow it.

"I’ll pay when he leaves, everyone has to queue, follow the order. He came first."

"Haha. Thank you, thank you, Kenny kid."

Kim knows I’m protecting him, I could leave, yet I’m sitting here with noodles, waiting on the robber.

A police car stops by the roadside, the female cop Stella is planning to get a cup of coffee, it’s another night shift for her.

Unlike the day, the night shift is understaffed, she has no partner.

Lately, the Haitians and Cubans are still fighting, the battle has spread from Little Havana to downtown, there’s a severe shortage of police power.

Click, the convenience store door opens. For a moment, Stella is confused, what is this?

In her sight, a young man in a hoodie is pointing a gun at boss Kim, Kim is lying on the counter looking at her phone, and beside her, asshole Kenny Clark is eating noodles.

The scene is so strange, oh God, are you going to tell me this is a robbery?

"my GOD!" I place the noodles down in depression.

Kim helplessly puts down her phone.

The young man sees Stella, his hand freezes in fear, bang!

A shot hits the wall behind Kim.

"MPD!"
