Chapter 299 Mutual Probing

Chapter 299: Chapter 299 Mutual Probing

"What in the world happened? I demand to know the whole truth!"

Nan Shi trembled all over in his urgency, his voice raised in anger.

"Your Majesty, someone had set an ambush in the hunting ground ahead of time, all the guards were slain. Furthermore, the beasts in the depths of the forest were disturbed, making the hunting ground treacherously dangerous. Most importantly, there are many assassins inside!"

"Assassins?"

"Yes, these assassins were likely targeting Princess Chu Baihan. Your humble servant discovered the bodies of the assassins, which is why I followed them. Those assassins are highly skilled in martial arts and are numerous. They came prepared. Although General Shi and Pavilion Master Tang tried to protect the Princess, in the end, they were forced to the edge of a cliff..."

"At first, the Princess was ambushed and fell off the cliff, afterwards, General Shi jumped down after her in an attempt to save her."

Lun Chengran answered with a sorrowful tone.

Nan Shi’s eyes reddened.

Hanhan was in trouble, no, it couldn’t be possible, Hanhan couldn’t be in trouble!

She was so clever, how could she allow herself to be driven to jump off a cliff?

"And Tang Ze? Why didn’t he protect Hanhan!" Nan Shi asked furiously.

Lun Chengran was startled for a moment...

Wasn’t it the Emperor who wanted Pavilion Master Tang to stay away from the Princess? And now he wanted Pavilion Master Tang to protect her?

No wonder the Princess looked so disappointed when she mentioned the Emperor.

To be honest, even he was beginning to lose respect for the Emperor.

But then again, he was no better.

He had no right to despise others.

Suppressing his emotions, Lun Chengran replied seriously, "Your Majesty, Pavilion Master Tang was indeed protecting the Princess. However, he was entangled with several fierce beasts and thus was unable to free himself."

"A fine excuse for being unable to free himself. He clearly could have protected Hanhan well." Nan Shi now harbored deep resentment towards Yan Lin.

"Quick, search below the cliff!" Nan Shi ordered, gasping for breath.

"Yes, Your Majesty."

Immediately, another group of the Imperial Army went to search.

"Father, please take care of yourself. I’ll support you and you can rest," said Nan Leshi, stepping forward at this moment, speaking with concern.

Nan Shi’s face was stern as he shook his head, "Without finding Hanhan, I won’t be at ease."

"Your Majesty, so many people are searching for the Princess, we will surely find her. It’s more crucial that you take care of yourself. You are the Emperor, you cannot fall. I will support you to rest, and once there is news of the Princess, I will inform you," Nan Leshi continued to speak gently.

"But..."

"Father, if the Princess returns, she wouldn’t want to see you having compromised your health because of worry," Nan Leshi continued in a softer voice.

Her words seemed to have persuaded Nan Shi.

He frowned but went back to his tent to rest nonetheless.

Soon, only Nan Xu’s people were left here.

Nan Xu had all the servants sent away, leaving only Nan Leshi, Nan Leqin, Kong Cheng, and Lun Chengran.

"Kong Lang, you had a hard time with today’s events," Nan Leshi said as she walked over and took Kong Cheng’s hand with a smile.

She had been competing with Chu Baihan for so long, and today, she finally heard news of that wretched woman’s death.

"This matter isn’t really my achievement. When it comes down to it, it’s all thanks to Brother Chengran," Kong Cheng said with a sour tone.

"Lun Chengran, did Chu Baihan truly fall off the cliff?"

Nan Xu squinted his eyes, his voice sharp as he questioned Lun Chengran.

The cliff was so high; if Chu Baihan really fell, that would be for the best, as she would either die or be injured.

What he was worried about now was whether Lun Chengran might deceive him.

"Prince Xu, please be assured, Princess Chu Baihan won’t be stirring up any trouble now, she definitely won’t spoil your plans," Lun Chengran said in a heavy voice.

His words were too ambiguous.

Nan Xu felt uneasy and angrily said, "You better explain to this prince clearly, what exactly is going on?"

"Prince Xu, I have some matters I would like to discuss with the Seventh Princess, please grant me an opportunity."

Lun Chengran spoke with stubborn determination.

He’s got some nerve, daring to negotiate terms with this prince?

Nan Xu wished he could strangle Lun Chengran right there and then.

But, considering the other party might still have information on Chu Baihan, he had no choice but to suppress the anger in his heart.

"Fine, then you may speak with the Seventh Princess first. But afterwards, you must explain everything about Nan Baihan to this prince, and if you lie, I will kill you!"

Nan Xu spoke coldly, his gaze at Lun Chengran resembling that of a venomous snake.

Having said that, he flicked his sleeve and stormed off in a rage.

"Fifth Princess, Vice Minister Kong, you may leave as well," Lun Chengran glanced at Nan Leshi and Kong Cheng, then continued with an expressionless face.

He sure carries himself with quite the air of importance!

Nan Leshi felt irritated.

But remembering how even Prince Xu had just made concessions, she decided to bite her tongue for now.

Before leaving, she glanced at Nan Leqin and said with sarcasm, "Seventh Princess, you are truly fortunate, to think that someone is still so devoted to you even now."

Nan Leqin seemed to be immune to all poisons.

She laughed, then said nonchalantly, "Thank you for the compliment, Fifth Sister."

Once Nan Leshi and Kong Cheng had left, Nan Leqin immediately turned to Lun Chengran with a smile, "General Lun, what did you wish to discuss with this princess?"

"Fifth Princess, if the Eldest Princess were to die, would you be sad?"

Hearing Lun Chengran’s words, Nan Leqin almost burst into laughter.

Sad?

She would rather seek out monks to curse that wench to never find peace in death, how could she possibly be sad?

However, she did not want to reveal her ruthlessness in front of Lun Chengran just yet.

She quickly lowered her head and said despondently, "The Eldest Princess is still my sister, if something were to happen to her, of course, I would be sad."

Seeing Nan Leqin like this, Lun Chengran’s expression was complicated.

Before entering the Hunting Ground, the Seventh Princess had been the same—teary-eyed, saying she bore no grudge against the Eldest Princess.

At the time, he thought she was kind-hearted.

But for some reason, after what the Eldest Princess had said, he now found the Seventh Princess’s demeanor... very fake.

He spoke with an impassive face, "In that case, I should release the Eldest Princess."

"Release her? What do you mean?" Nan Leqin suddenly looked up.

Her face still wore that feigned concern, which seemed quite comical.

"Actually, the Eldest Princess is not dead; I’ve detained her. Locked in a place where they all are unable to find her for the time being. Because I wanted to let you, the Seventh Princess, deal with her personally, as she has caused you much suffering..."

"But now, hearing your words, it seems you care deeply about the safety of the Eldest Princess. Thus, I should just let her go, to spare you the worry."

Lun Chengran sighed and turned to leave.

Upon hearing this, desperation filled Nan Leqin’s heart.

She shouted, "Wait a moment!"

"Seventh Princess, is something the matter?" Lun Chengran looked at her, feigning confusion.

Nan Leqin hesitated for a long while in her mind, but finally decided to stop pretending.

She gritted her teeth and said loudly, "I lied to you, I hate the Eldest Princess, I want to tear her to pieces. Where is she? Take me to her. I want to kill her with my own hands!"
