Chapter 126: What do we do next?

Chen Li’s lips parted, her expression venomous, but before she could unleash whatever fury was boiling inside her, the door swung open with a sharp creak.

Xia Lin stepped inside, eyes darting between the two women.

Hua Ling, had already left so Xia Lin did not get to see the imprint on her face, Chen Li stood rigid, her fists clenched so tightly that her nails dug into her palms.

And then there was Hua Jing—unbothered, smirking, as if she had just watched an entertaining street performance.

Xia Lin’s gaze sharpened, immediately sensing something was off.

She narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "What happened here?"

Chen Li huffed, her nostrils flaring, but she knew better than to make a scene now. The wedding banquet was still in full swing, and she had guests to impress.

Without another word, she stormed out, her silken robes billowing behind her like a dark cloud.

As soon as the door shut behind her, Xia Lin bolted toward Hua Jing, grabbing her shoulders and inspecting her from head to toe with dramatic urgency.

She looked quite worried especially considering the way Chen Li had walked out

"Did she hurt you?! Where did she touch you?! Are you still intact?! Blink twice if you’re in distress!"

Chen Li was quite used to punishing Hua Jing. Xia Lin could not accept it!

Hua Jing let out an exaggerated sigh, placing a hand over her forehead as if she were some tragic heroine. "Oh, Xia Lin, the horrors I have witnessed today..."

Xia Lin gasped. "What horrors?! Did she try to poison you? Did she threaten you?!"

Hua Jing shook her head solemnly. "Worse. She—" Hua Jing placed a dramatic pause here, her eyes darkening as she leaned in closer.

Xia Lin leaned in as well, her breath hitched in suspense.

Hua Jing exhaled. "She slapped her own daughter."

Silence.

Xia Lin blinked. "She... what?"

Hua Jing sighed again, clutching her chest as if the weight of this tragedy was too much to bear. "Oh, Xia Lin, if only you had seen it. The sheer force, the unexpected betrayal, the slow-motion impact—it was the most brutal mother-daughter attack in history."

Xia Lin’s jaw dropped. She glanced at the door as if expecting Chen Li and Hua Ling to come back fighting. "Wait, wait, wait—you’re telling me she slapped Hua Ling?"

Hua Jing nodded gravely. "Right across the face. And let me tell you, it was loud. I wouldn’t be surprised if half the guests outside heard it. Hua Ling’s makeup? Completely ruined. That perfect bridal glow? Gone. Smudged. Just like that." She snapped her fingers for effect.

Xia Lin covered her mouth, suppressing a laugh. "No way. You’re lying."

Hua Jing gasped, offended. "Xia Lin, would I ever lie to you about something this important?"

Xia Lin gave her a deadpan look. "Yes. Every day."

Hua Jing waved a hand dismissively. "Alright, fine, I might embellish some details, but the slap was very real. And oh, the irony! That slap was meant for me, but alas—" she spread her arms dramatically, "—fate had other plans!"

Xia Lin finally burst out laughing. "Oh gods, I wish I had seen it."

Hua Jing grinned. "Oh, it was glorious."

Xia Lin wiped at her eyes, still giggling, then gave Hua Jing a once-over. "Well, at least you came out unscathed. But now what? What do we do next?"

Hua Jing’s smirk returned, sharper than ever. "Now?" She stepped toward the door, her emerald-green dress swaying as she walked.

Hua Jing let out an exaggerated groan, stretching her arms dramatically. "I need air, Xia Lin. This wedding is suffocating me."

Xia Lin tilted her head. "You do look a little pale. Should I fetch some tea?"

Hua Jing scoffed. "No, no. I need space, not tea. Let’s take a walk."

Xia Lin brightened immediately. "Then let me show you around, my lady!"

And just like that, the two of them skipped—yes, skipped—their way out of the main hall like two carefree children on an adventure.

Hua Jing couldn’t help but marvel at the grandness of the estate. The Hua Manor was enormous, much larger than she had expected, with sweeping courtyards, elaborate pavilions, and stone bridges arching over serene koi ponds. The pathways were lined with ornate lanterns, their soft golden glow illuminating the manicured gardens.

"Wow," Hua Jing murmured, pausing to admire a particularly extravagant water fountain. "No wonder my dear father kept me locked up all these years. He didn’t want me realizing just how much he was favoring those two idiots over me."

Xia Lin clicked her tongue in agreement. "The resources he spent on them while keeping you hidden away... it’s infuriating."

Hua Jing sighed, shaking her head. "If only favoritism were a crime."

They continued strolling, their footsteps light as they made their way through the estate.

But then—

Hua Jing slowed her pace, her eyes locking onto a lone figure standing near the entrance to one of the side courtyards.

A young woman.

She wore plain clothes, nothing extravagant, yet her features were striking—high cheekbones, delicate brows, and a quiet elegance that set her apart. But it wasn’t just her beauty that caught Hua Jing’s attention.

It was her hesitance.

The woman stood there, her fingers twisting together nervously as she stared toward the wedding hall. She took a small step forward, as if about to enter—then hesitated, retreating slightly.

She repeated this uncertain movement again.

And again.

Hua Jing narrowed her eyes. Suspicious.

She looked towards the wedding hall herself and felt as if she already understood what was going to happen next.

Could it be...

A small smirk appeared perfectly on her plump lips.

I wanted to cause trouble yet trouble is already bringing itself without me lifting a finger!

How lucky! Haha! How fortunate!

Xia Lin on the other hand looked at hayang Madame and wondered what it was that was going on inside that head of hers.

With that expression, probably nothing good!

She was just about to march over and interrogate the poor girl when she turned to Xia Lin instead.

"Who is that?"
