Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Beggars Can’t Be Choosers

The power of public opinion is immense; just look at how certain celebrities’ careers have plummeted to rock bottom because of a single scandal breaking on social media.

Although she wasn’t a public figure and didn’t wield that much influence, as the woman standing beside the multinational CEO Fu Chenlie, her every move was destined to be scrutinized under a magnifying glass.

She definitely didn’t want to hear Fu Group employees whispering about her private relationship with the president every day when she went to work.

Who knows what kind of nasty remarks could reach her ears.

Fu Chenlie’s displeased questioning voice penetrated her hearing, "Wen Ran, what do you mean? I kindly offer you the privilege of sharing an elevator ride with me, and you turn it down?"

Seeing his stubborn insistence, she knew she had to make things clear to him or he would not let her go.

Wen Ran met his captivating eyes and bravely spoke up, "Let’s put it this way, I don’t want to be seen with you too much at the company. I’m afraid it could affect your reputation."

"What reputation?" he asked.

"The reputation of being devoted and pure."

Although she had only been at Fu Group for two days, she had heard the employees discussing him in private.

Everyone knew he had once been perfectly matched with Jiang Wan Ning, and after Jiang Wan Ning disappeared without a trace, no other woman ever appeared by his side.

Therefore, he was given the accolades of being "devoted" and "pure."

However—

Even after Wen Ran had said that, Fu Chenlie still didn’t let her off the hook, "Does it matter what others say? Get in!"

She had no choice but to argue again, "Boss, have you forgotten? You told me not to tell anyone about our relationship."

"So?"

"At the company, I’m just a lowly driver and you are the formidable CEO. If I go to the staff canteen with you, people will suspect you, the boss, of not being picky when you are hungry, taking advantage of a small driver under an unwritten rule. This will not only be bad for your reputation, but I will also be targeted by the male and female employees who secretly admire you. Please show mercy and spare me."

Fu Chenlie’s lips curled into a profound smile, and without a second word, he stepped out of the elevator and pulled her in.

As the elevator doors slowly closed, a still-dumbfounded Wen Ran heard Fu Chenlie’s heart-piercing words, "I would welcome it if you were targeted by others."

Her nerves tensed instantly

and her heart sunk rapidly.

Wen Ran had initially thought that his willingness to teach her to drive meant he had started to change his opinion of her.

It wasn’t until that moment, with his single sentence that plunged her into an ice cellar, that she realized he had never looked up to her.

In his heart, she was still the person who would stop at nothing to use marriage as a transaction for money.

Wen Ran stood awkwardly in the corner of the elevator, her face visibly filled with disappointment and sadness.

Fu Chenlie glanced at her, and upon seeing the girl’s aggrieved demeanor, an unexpected twinge of pity arose within him. But, almost immediately, that sympathy was overcome by rationality.

She was merely a woman his Grandma had forced upon him, a scheming woman who fancifully thought she could climb the social ladder and transform into a phoenix.

There was nothing to pity.

Ding—

The elevator reached the floor of the staff canteen.

Fu Chenlie exited first.

Wen Ran, with her head down, followed him off the elevator at a leisurely pace.

The staff canteen was bustling.

Everyone was initially eating, chatting, and discussing work and life, but someone must have been the first to see Fu Chenlie descending from the elevator and exclaimed, "Mr. Fu is here."

After that, the noisy staff canteen suddenly fell silent.
