"Truth be told, they’re quite open-minded about this sort of thing."
"That’s easy to say..."
Wumeioge, still cautious, expressed some worry as he said,
"I’ll report this situation first. You go ahead and eat, then rest for a bit. I’ll call you if there’s any news. By the way, are you sure your First Embrace was successful before you logged off? Do you now have your own Descendant?"
"Hey, it probably worked out."
Happy Stick put the last spoonful of porridge into his mouth, contentedly rubbed his belly, wiped his mouth cheerfully, and paid the bill. As he swaggered back to the residential area, he said to the curious Meow,
"That quest didn’t have a trigger prompt, so I don’t know if it was completed. But just before I was killed, I could clearly feel that something new had appeared in the character interface. I just didn’t have time to take a closer look before I was kicked offline."
"Do you think, if this really is a bug, the development team might take back my Descendant’s subplot?"
"Those two sisters are no ordinary people."
"They’re the daughters of Grey Claw, the previous crime boss Colando, who died at our hands. They come from a significant background."
"So, they have a vendetta against you for killing their father?"
There was a strange tone in Meow’s voice as he said,
"I don’t understand your vampire’s twisted way of doing things, but I feel if they truly have such an identity, you better take it easy, lest they slit your throat in your sleep."
"Pssh, what’s there to be afraid of; a life every three days, right!"
Stick Brother laughed heartily and chatted a few more sentences with Meow before hanging up. After returning home, he planned to take a short nap.
He had been playing the game day and night for some time now. Though the gaming helmet’s functionality prevented him from losing his Perception of night and day, this extended period of living in the virtual world still made it somewhat difficult for Stick Brother to adjust back to reality.
It was like dealing with jet lag after flying to a distant place. Stick Brother felt he also needed a short but fulfilling sleep to readjust his Perception of the real world.
After pouring himself a glass of yogurt, he sat on the sofa to watch a sports program on TV but ended up dozing off with his head lolling to the side on the sofa, snoring away in no time.
He was sleeping soundly.
But the problem was that he started dreaming almost as soon as he fell asleep, and the dreams were extremely bizarre.
Happy Stick felt as if he had been transported into a woman’s body, vaguely watching a black and white silent movie of someone else’s life through a first-person perspective.
In his view, he saw "himself" born into a medieval "Godfather family."
Her father was the Underground Big Boss of a bustling small town, constantly scheming and vying for territory with his rivals, while her mother hadn’t been with her father out of love but was simply an ’extra gain’ from a robbery her father had committed years ago.
Yet, to be fair, even though her father didn’t harbor much affection for her mother, he indeed fulfilled his duties as a husband and father.
Although the family often had to migrate to avoid their enemies, traveling back and forth on country roads in an unsettling night by carriage,
as soon as he got the chance, her father would put aside his work to teach her and her sister how to read, write, and practice swordsmanship.
Such a life continued until she was twenty when one day her father’s "business" suffered a significant setback. The newly crowned King began to crack down on the shadows to consolidate his rule, and her father nearly got killed in the street by Soldiers. Her family also fell into a state akin to that of drifters.
She clearly remembered one evening when her injured and disabled father left the bridge hideout alone. When he returned at midnight, he was a completely changed man.
Not only had his disabilities healed, but in the dark of the night, she could see the bloodlight flickering in his Eye.
Her father told her he had sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for their family’s return to the glory of old days. She didn’t understand what he meant at that time. However, soon their family life not only returned to its former prosperity but even went beyond it.
In less than five years, her father became the Underground godfather of several surrounding cities, and it wasn’t until then that she heard the name "Wolf Poison" for the first time from her father.
The dream reached that point, and Happy Stick began to feel that something was amiss.
He struggled continuously in the dream, trying to shake off the unsettling "memories", which also affected the continuity of the dreamscape. The progress of time within it sped up rapidly, condensing decades of life into freeze-frame images flashing before Stick Brother’s eyes.
The final image stopped in a desolate night scene, where "herself," blind and helpless, lay on the ground awaiting death, while a tall, blood-mouthed man knelt next to her.
That was clearly the scene from two hours earlier when Happy Stick completed the First Embrace.
This directly scared Happy Stick to the point where his hair stood on end.
The six-foot-tall man jumped up from his sofa, even knocking over the yogurt cup on the table corner, splashing the milky liquid everywhere.
"Shit! Shit! What the hell was that?"
Stick Brother, still in a state of shock, stood in the living room holding his head with bare feet.
The TV continued to play a rerun of a soccer match, and sunlight still shone brightly outside the window, but none of it could soothe his heart’s nervous unease.
He was certain there was something wrong with the dream he had just had!
It wasn’t a dream!
