Chapter 1640: 550. The Undead Burner has been renamed to "Rat Rat Burner" today.

The Bloody Captain trapped in the valley hasn’t exactly given up. He and his pirate vampires have already figured out the pattern of these peculiar Ratman attacks and made targeted defenses accordingly. Moreover, the accumulated war fog over the entire valley prevent sunlight, ensuring that the combat power of these vampire pirates doesn’t wane over time.

They seem to be badly beaten, but due to their general slyness and unsatisfied greed, their casualties are actually not that high.

As another dusk approaches, those lazy guys jumped into the reinforced trenches early. Murphy noticed that they place a strange sacred emblem every few meters within the trench, which is definitely not something good!

Because it exudes quite a filthy aura, and approaching it, you can smell a nauseating fishy scent.

Murphy didn’t know where the pirates got these filthy emblems from, but their "poison to fight poison" tactic is undoubtedly effective. With these emblems buried in the trenches, the massive number of ratmen traversing underground seemed to be shocked by the bizarre aura, making it impossible for them to approach here, naturally hindering their malicious tunneling offensive.

They can only rush out from underground hundreds of meters away from the trench, chaotically charging forward with reckless abandon, then crashing like a noisy black wave against the rock-solid wall of gunfire.

The vampire pirates cursed with filthy sea slang, saying things like landlubber and bilge rat, with some drunkenly shouting obscenities about wanting intimate relations with the direct female relatives of these ratmen—their vulgar descriptions so vivid that Murphy couldn’t help but marvel at the extreme tastes of these pirates.

However, their marksmen skills are excellent.

No boasting, every bullet fired by these guys can claim the life of a ratman, their accuracy almost rivals the Blood Vulture Clan’s midnight hunters. They’ve set up a few small naval cannons on higher ground that, with each shot, can churn up disgusting blood and meat mud in the ratmen’s charge formation.

This deadly precision benefits from the Sin’s Blood bonus from the Blood Fear Clan, as since ancient times, the Blood Fear Clan has been known throughout the continent for producing the deadliest hunters under the midnight sky, contrasting with the Thorn Clan’s close-combat prowess. The two clans have been at odds since their inception.

The continuous skirmishing over several days has allowed these vampire pirates to accumulate ample experience in combating ratmen. Whenever the charging ratmen breach the death net of gunfire and cannon fire, old sea dogs would shout and roll explosive barrels out, then Sharpshooters from the Blood Fear Clan would shoot them from a safe distance to detonate them.

The massive flames would often incinerate all the ratmen in an area, with scorching light flying everywhere, inflicting continuous burning agony on those overly hairy beasts.

They also seem to fear the sound, as the explosion of each powder barrel frightens away the charging ratmen, and their screeching retreats always draw raucous, cackling laughter from the vampire pirates entrenched.

These veteran sailors’ morale seems wholly dependent on the enemy’s reaction.

The weaker the enemy, the higher their morale, truly living up to the reputation of only fighting favorable battles.

"Those emblems..."

Murphy initially wanted to join the fight but soon realized that the Blood Fear Clan’s positions were quite solid. Those crafty old sea dogs’ land combat skills weren’t bad either, and being vampires, they had ample endurance to keep exchanging offensive and defensive blows with these ratmen until midnight.

Thus, the Vampire Lord stood atop the pirate fort, while surveying the battlefield below, he turned and asked Babro, who remained casually composed:

"You haven’t taken up belief in some odd cult during your exile on the Misty Sea, have you? Why are you carrying so many sacred emblems of an evil god? If you’ve actually become heretics, I’ll have to urge Lord Paryen to perform a humane wipeout of you all."

"You dare not speak nonsense, Lord Morphy, we are the pitiable ’faith insulators,’ vampire, what evil god would want to accept us?

You see the Wave Fishman’s Daguan Sacred Emblems. Every time we battle with those fools, we find lots of these things. Even rookie pirates know that the fishmen’s god is genuinely an evil god, unless truly desperate at sea, no one would worship it."

Babro was unwilling to answer the question.

Under usual circumstances, it didn’t matter, but now on the battlefield, he had to maintain the Bloody Captain’s cold authority, so Deputy Claire answered the question.

Supporting the pirate sword at his waist, Claire softly explained to the two guests who were not among the maritime norms:

"We used to destroy these emblems, but soon we realized that they actually have their uses. The fishmen’s Evil God Daguan is greedy and irate, foolish, and regards the place where his emblems are found as his territory on earth, allowing no life other than fishmen there.

In these circumstances, pouring some fishman blood onto the sacred emblems and tossing them out can trigger a ’Divine Power Field,’ forcing those ratmen to fear the evil god’s aura, refraining from underground maneuvers, and only able to attempt to overwhelm us in direct confrontation.
