Chapter 1638: 549. Damn! Mice! All mice! Ah, I’m gonna die!_2

Murphy toyed with the Calculating Pearl and shook his head, saying:

"The Blood Fear Clan left the continent two hundred years ago. We, the newer generations of vampires, have little understanding of them. Back then, Lord Paryen not only destroyed the Blood Fear Clan but also filtered out the information concerning them.

It’s natural that you don’t understand Blood Fear. Before I left, Triss specifically explained their combat style to me.

Our marvelous kin have the ability to extract power from their enemies during battles. They call this ability ’Plunder.’ Generally speaking, the power they draw dissipates quickly after a fight, leaving only a trace of insight into its nature.

But Triss also mentioned that within the Blood Fear Clan, certain remarkable ’Power Thieves’ are born.

They are capable of storing the plundered power for extended periods. If a Blood Fear is fortunate enough to encounter a generous strongman, they could indeed gain Golden Power in a short time.

But that is merely an illusion of power.

Miss Claire is clearly one of these rare ’Power Thieves.’ The Golden Power she possesses now is real, but she can only use it for one brief and all-out battle. After that, she’ll return to her previous rank.

I guess Miss Claire’s power comes from the Blood Covenant Knights? Is it the ’Amulet’ Lord Paryen entrusted to your group?"

"Smart little fella! No wonder you’re the Crimson Witch’s offspring."

Deputy Claire didn’t deny it. She donned a dashing pirate eye patch to cover her left eye and said:

"Lady Triss must trust you greatly; otherwise, it’s hard to explain how you’ve survived around her for so long. The Triss I remember was undoubtedly one of the most wicked beings ever birthed in vampire history, someone even my former Clan Leader, Lord Charlemagne, had to yield to.

Lord Paryen permitted me to retain his power as a gesture of goodwill.

I’m more than willing to protect my crew, but the problem is that the hidden mastermind has yet to reveal themselves. I can’t squander it casually.

I’m the captain’s trump card.

I still rely on the power of valor to protect my beloved captain."

"If you want to escape with your captain tonight, then you’ll have to use it now!"

Murphy squinted his eyes and pulled out a pocket watch to check the time.

He said:

"With the temporary addition of the Palano Knights, Transylvania currently has three Golden Ones. I will persuade them to allow you to siphon a portion of their power for self-defense, but for now, you need to use Lord Paryen’s goodwill. If the Ratmen have already started appearing en masse, we can’t afford to linger here for long.

I’ve dealt with the dusk plenty of times, and I believe that in this matter, you should trust my judgment."

"But I’m still unsure if your army is strong enough."

The Bloody Captain drained the drink in his hand and, exhaling heavily, said:

"We only have one chance to break free, Mr. Murphy.

I have faith in my subordinates, but if your side falters, then this Duke of Blood Fear is going to meet his end in this backwater nowhere. Every captain across the Misty Sea will laugh at me for being a pathetic landlubber.

Hmph, you all probably don’t grasp what a death like that means to a pirate."

"I have plenty of confidence in my warriors too, but it will depend on how much you’re willing to invest in this rescue effort."

Murphy turned back and said.

The Bloody Captain raised his eyebrows, pressed his black captain’s hat firmly onto his head, and, with a hint of provocation, said:

"What’s this? Little white face looking to score some gains?"

"No, my point is, though this is our first meeting, I’ve already had enough of your arrogance, so let’s set some ground rules."

Murphy stared at Babro and raised a finger, saying:

"We’ll save you and your clansmen, but moving forward, during the Black Disaster, you and your land forces will follow my orders! Your previous independent actions to shirk responsibility have already led you to a dead end—I won’t allow such things to happen again during the Black Disaster.

Perhaps you and your First Mate care little about the Blood Fear dignity or redemption, and are merely agreeing because you fear Lord Paryen. If so, I won’t bother convincing you with ideals and hopes.

Instead, let’s use a method your pirates enjoy to establish a mutually beneficial collaboration—a gamble. You people love gambling, don’t you? Conveniently, Transylvania has the continent’s best casinos. So, consider this a wager.

If I succeed, until the war ends, you’ll obey me and keep your arrogance in check. I guarantee you’ll profit handsomely.

If I fail, then you’re free to take advantage of the chaos to flee anywhere and do whatever pleases you.

Want to bet on that?"

"Cool! A bold fellow with a demeanor beyond his years; it reminds me of myself over a century ago."

Babro whistled, stretched his neck, and said gravely:

"Alright! A gamble it is! Claire will use that power as you request to ensure we win tonight’s battle, but if your side fails to provide proper support and we have to go above and beyond, then during the subsequent Black Disaster, you, ’Governor,’ better not spew nonsense or give commands.

We’re pirates, and even on land, we remain so!

Defying authority is our tradition.

Transylvania may be a notorious dump, but I’m sure even there I can squeeze out some profit. Just know that my old dogs are nothing like your soldiers—unless they receive fair pay, they won’t lift a finger, not even when it requires risking their lives."
