Chapter 1625: 546. Tardy Aid - The Embarrassing Moments of Visitors from Exotic Lands
"Master, currently, two-thirds of the Blood Vulture Clan members registered have arrived. The remaining ones are rushing over as quickly as possible. In three hours, your Blood race army will be ready."
This battle will involve 400 vampires, making it the largest operation by the Blood Vulture Clan since the disaster in Cardman City."
At the entrance to Shadow Valley, Adel quietly emerged from the shadows atop a rocky ledge. Folding her wings, she placed her hands on her abdomen with the poise of the finest steward while reporting to Murphy, who stood gazing at the chaotic camp below:
"Including the servant troops, this battle will scale up to over 800 individuals. I recently spoke with a few elders from Shadow Valley. While they are unwilling to send their precious soldiers into battle, they are willing to provide a ranger squad of 50 to offer us firepower support.
Please forgive my clumsiness, but persuading them to wholeheartedly serve you will require just a bit more time."
"I hardly see that as a failure, Adel. You managed to enlist them into our ranks within a single night, and that’s already extraordinary. After all, this isn’t a strategy game where you can achieve 100% loyalty with a single mouse click.
We live in reality, where loyalty is always a rare and elusive treasure."
Murphy waved his hand, motioning for Adel not to be so self-effacing.
Afterward, he withdrew his gaze and turned to face his "former Blood Descendant," saying:
"You no longer need to call me ’Master,’ for you are now free. That which Sin’s Blood desires most has been obtained by your own hand, Adel. Your actions make me proud. So, I must ask—how does it feel to reclaim your freedom?"
"I’d like to tell you everything is perfect so I can feign gratitude for your kindness, but the truth is, it’s awful."
Adel shook her head with deliberate frankness, saying:
"It feels like being a ship adrift without a guiding lighthouse, navigating a stormy sea called free will. Each wave threatens to mislead me with the siren call of freedom—or worse, to shipwreck through unrestrained indulgence absent the constraints of any rules.
Freedom is wonderful, Master.
But not everyone needs it.
If you truly wanted to grant me freedom, then you should not interfere with how I lay out my own life. After all, my decision to become your loyal servant was also an expression of that freedom, wasn’t it?"
"Sophistry!"
Murphy snorted, saying:
"It seems you’ve picked up some bad habits from the taverns of these different world people. You know exactly why I had to do this, Adel. Before, I couldn’t speak plainly because of our relationship. But now, I think we can talk candidly about this awkward topic during the warriors’ assembly.
About those twisted, inappropriate feelings you have for me..."
"How could you say such things in front of a lady!"
Adel’s cheeks flushed red, a rare sight for a vampire.
Flustered, she rebuked:
"I don’t think we should be discussing my personal affairs under these circumstances! Master, isn’t there a battle coming up? Shouldn’t we be focusing on how to save our compatriots? Is your mind truly suited to dwell on matters like this?"
"I’m merely doing my part. Considering the greed, cunning, and lack of self-control the Blood Fear Clan has exhibited recently, I believe letting them fend for themselves wouldn’t warrant criticism— not even if Lord Paryen himself intervened.
It’s their own foolish actions that have landed them in this awkward situation. It has nothing to do with us!
I am not the Clan Leader of the Blood Fear Clan. Why should I bother with their concerns?"
Murphy didn’t bother disguising his irritation as he spoke to Adel, showing a trace of annoyance while curling his lips:
"If not for the Black Disaster looming, which requires us to unite every available force, I would’ve rushed to the Blood Fear Clan’s slaughter site just to laugh loudly at those idiots. Fine, I admit that this topic might’ve come up too abruptly.
If you don’t want to discuss it now, we can postpone it—or I could arrange a consultation with a foreign psychologist for you, if you’d like some counseling."
With that, Murphy made a graceful gesture of farewell like a gentleman and unfurled his wings, preparing to mingle among the players.
Yet, as he hovered into the air, Adel lifted her head.
Though visibly embarrassed, she didn’t shy away from the matter.
She brushed aside her hair and said to Murphy:
"I admit, Master, that over the past while, the influence of the Blood Covenant has led me to harbor some improper ’feelings’ toward you. I cannot deny that.
But now, after drinking the Source Blood, those peculiar emotions have vanished.
I can now approach our relationship with rationality. I must tell you, I did sense your anxiety about this issue, perhaps because you’ve already seen the Grand Duke of Triss as your lifelong partner.
You wish to avoid being burdened by misplaced emotions.
Rest assured, under present circumstances, I shall not become your burden."
"Ah, hearing such a definitive response from you is a relief."
Murphy let out a long breath.
He folded his wings and landed back on the rock, telling Adel:
"I’m truly glad to see you stepping away from that twisted dynamic. Just like my story with Triss—influenced by the Blood Covenant, I almost became a servile fool at her feet."
