Chapter 161: 58. Witch hunter? Why is there a witch hunter? We really are enemies on a narrow road this time!_1
"Mr. Portman, you say that three of the workers who went out to cut wood last night are missing?"
On the fifth day of Cardman City’s special event, Milian received some bad news early in the morning.
She was sipping a strangely flavored tea that was somewhat invigorating, looking at the captain of the camp guards, who was once a policeman in the outer city area of Cardman City. He now commands a total of 30 camp guards.
The somewhat bald and chubby man in front of Milian was wiping sweat from his forehead.
Even though Milian was young enough to be his daughter, his life and newly acquired position hung in her word, filling him with awe.
This emotion was keenly observed by the red-haired girl.
She didn’t mind the feeling of being respected, so she adopted the demeanor of the managers she had observed in her memories and slowed her speech to ask:
"Could there be a mistake in the records? Many of our guards have never done this kind of professional work before. Have you checked it out yourself?"
"I personally went to the tent where the three workers were assigned, and also asked the people around, Madam director."
The chubby captain said earnestly:
"I can confirm they truly disappeared! They did not show up for work today. The team leader who tracks the labor points has not seen these three since last night."
"Could they have escaped?"
Milian’s assistant, a clever and smart maid from a wealthy family, couldn’t help but ask when she saw her superior deep in thought:
"Although most people in the camp have accepted management, some stubborn people are dissatisfied with the order brought by Sir Morphy. We all know this."
"No, that’s not it."
The captain of the guards, Mr. Portman, explained:
"The three lumberjacks were young men rescued by Sir Maxim. They’ve been working very diligently since they were assigned work. Two of them even have families in the camp."
"Those who know them say they are very honest and dedicated. They have no reason, nor the capability to escape at this moment. They didn’t even take any food or clothes with them. How far could they have gotten?"
"Based on my many years of investigative experience, I suspect that they wandered off to relax after work and were taken by wild beasts. The forest nearby has had activity from wolves for quite some time."
"I don’t think the situation is that straightforward."
Milian shook her head and said to Mr. Portman:
"You take a team and search around. Don’t announce it to avoid panic. I need to report this to Sir Morphy. Fortunately, the curfew has been in effect for two days, otherwise we might not have noticed their absence."
A few minutes later, Morphy was informed about the "disappearance of the workers" in the survivor camp through the connection of the Calculating Pearl. He was in the middle of planning the "big burning plan" for retaking the city ruins and didn’t have time to spare. He looked up and saw two young players jovially carrying weapons out of the city.
He remembered these two were schoolmates of Bull Bull, right?
Two athletes!
Perfect for running an errand.
Morphy coughed and said to the two cheerful young players:
"My warriors, come over here. I have an important task for you."
The two players glanced at each other, then excitedly ran over, even mimiccing local customs in saluting Morphy, which they had learned from others.
"We are willing to pledge our loyalty to you, Sir Morphy."
The two boys expressed their loyalty.
But judging from their expressions, they were obviously trying to earn some favorability points.
Morphy, maintaining the demeanor of an NPC, ignored the eagerness on the faces of the two young players. He said in a somber tone:
"Something has happened at the survivor’s camp. Three diligent and reliable workers we were protecting disappeared last night. They might have been victims of a wild beast, but we cannot be careless.
I need you two to help investigate this matter and help Miss Milian resolve the troubles she has encountered."
"Ding"
Task activated, the two players immediately checked their player interfaces:
[Random Event "Trouble in the Camp" Activated.
Task Description: Disturbing changes have taken place in the Survivor’s Camp. In the current state where manpower is scarce, Sir Morphy has decided to dispatch his most loyal and reliable warriors to eliminate potential threats.
Task Goal: Thoroughly search around the camp and look for clues on the missing workers.
Task Reward: Unknown, additional rewards will be given for eliminating hidden dangers.
Task Deadline: Before dusk today.
Note!
Random events are different from tasks, they often have a time limit and offer random rewards. Please complete the event within the time limit.]
"Let’s go! Looking at our dependable Sir Morphy’s favorability should definitely skyrocket once we complete this task."
The two players accepted the task and rushed straight to the stables at the edge of the defense line, where there were gentle old horses available for rent for travel between the camp and the defense line.
But they clearly hadn’t ridden horses before and had to rely on an old horse handler to help them mount their steady steeds. They proceeded toward their task location at a turtle’s pace.
Morphy watched the entire process with a frustrated expression, especially the appalling poses of the two students, who were insistently proud while sprawled on horseback.
He felt it was necessary to train young players on some vehicle skills. After all, in this land teeming with swords and magic, adventurers should at least know how to ride a horse.
