"But don’t worry..."
The vampire lady stepped forward, placing her hand gently on Lisa’s delicate cheek.
Just like when they were children, she stroked Lisa’s cheek and her oddly colored hair.
She gazed into Lisa’s eyes, which carried a hint of resistance and fear, and pressed her forehead firmly against Lisa’s.
She spoke softly:
"I won’t take your leader’s throne, my poor childhood companion imprisoned by power. As long as you’re willing, you’re still the mistress of Shadow Valley. But I don’t think this title is more prestigious than the official recognition of ’Valley Baron’ by Transylvania.
You are studying the part of your bloodline that belongs to the Shadow Elves, unlocking your potential in this area.
That’s good.
But when you learn, you must learn thoroughly, Lisa.
The Shadow Elves will never pledge loyalty to a weak Matriarch. To become the true leader of a family, there’s still so much you need to learn.
But don’t be afraid, I will teach you.
Just like when we were little, I’m willing to teach you everything you don’t know.
Now I’ll go rescue the missing Weaver of Destiny.
If the Shadow Elves are yearning to rebuild their family, then my master will generously give them a chance, and Transylvania won’t reject their integration—provided they’re willing to follow the laws of that land."
Faced with Adel’s pressing "persuasion," Lisa initially wanted to refute her, but the more she listened, the quieter she became, unable to find a single reason to oppose the person in front of her.
It was evident that compared to Adel’s three decades of experience and growth in the outside world, Lisa, who had been trapped in the Dark Valley, was far too immature, almost completely overpowered by Adel.
Finally, when Adel released her grip, Lisa spoke in a weary and regretful tone:
"When you left, I thought I could escape your shadow, just like when we played games as children. I always tried so hard to be the kids’ leader, but even though you were so silent, the children of the valley always listened to your guidance.
I once thought it was because of Lady Mona’s aura, that you were merely basking in the glow of your good lineage.
But now I realize that’s not the case at all.
You’re more suited than Lady Mona to lead us, Adel. Perhaps this position was meant for you from the start. If you’re willing to come back, I’ll give up the throne of leadership."
"No, keep it, Lisa. Feel no guilt. This is something you earned for yourself."
Adel reached out to embrace her weary friend, indifferent to the jealousy and faint resentment hidden in Lisa’s words. She patted Lisa on the back and said:
"You still need to lead our people, while I will make everything that Mother left behind truly flourish—but not for the sake of power.
I’ll assist you in becoming a true half-elf leader, spreading your influence across Transylvania and even the Dark Mountain Range. I only hope that when I need you, you’ll stand by my side.
I’ll be your shadow, and the reward I long for won’t come from you.
You’re right.
We were born to stand together."
Adel let go of Lisa and very childishly held out her little finger.
The initially sorrowful Lisa couldn’t help but burst into laughter when she saw this gesture. She cast a helpless glance at Adel and extended her own little finger to lock with hers, like little girls making a promise.
"You and I will convince the elders to take the old, weak, and women to live in Transylvania, giving them the stable lives they’ve always yearned for. Meanwhile, you and the young ones eager to make a difference will stay in the valley.
Together, we’ll face the Black Disaster!"
Adel said:
"You don’t need the support of the elderly to be strong. You can share the power I bring. This will be your first gift to the Governor of Transylvania. I believe that once you see the warriors’ might firsthand, you’ll willingly offer your loyalty to my master."
"Is he really only your master, Adel?"
Lisa muttered softly:
"Why do I feel that your feelings for him are... complicated? Are you still alone now?"
"I don’t want to talk about it, not because I don’t want to tell you."
Adel sighed, turning to gaze at her mother’s stone coffin. Memories of that night—Lady Shui’s cursed temptation and their conversation—flashed through her mind, eerily mirroring this exchange with Lisa.
A woman crumbling under the weight of another woman’s presence.
After several moments of silence, Adel finally said:
"I... honestly don’t know the answer, either."
---
"Lisa is collaborating with the Shadow Elves? Damn it!"
In the player camp, Meckel, the ranger captain who had just beaten Little Wei Ming in an archery contest, stood with an Iron Hammer Guard on his back in front of Mrs. Bernice. He didn’t despise her for being undead.
On the contrary, he maintained the respect he had for her since childhood, sharing his wife’s current predicament with his undead mother-in-law in full honesty.
This respect and openness stemmed partly from their current relationship, but also from "childhood trauma." Mrs. Bernice had personally trained him as a child, often whipping him during lessons.
This was a "tradition" of Shadow Valley—every half-elf in the valley shared a similar inner conflict like Adel’s. They resisted all things related to Shadow Elves but paradoxically adopted elements of their system to shape their identity upon reaching independence.
For instance, Shadow Elves had a penchant for using whips to ’instill wisdom’ in their apprentices.
"My daughter was never the wisest one. She’s been played like a fiddle by the Shadow Elves. How could she turn into someone who betrays her people for power? Ah, perhaps this is all my fault. If only I had been there for her as she grew..."
Mrs. Bernice was deeply remorseful.
But the coldness of the undead allowed her regret to carry the weight of judgment. Clearly, she was unhappy with her daughter’s current state, which worried Meckel.
He tried to explain his wife’s actions, but before he could speak, Mrs. Bernice sprang to her feet.
"Take me back. I want to teach her a lesson!"
The Netherworld Knight scolded:
"Before she foolishly angers Adel, I must pull her back on the right path. The half-elves of Shadow Valley must never walk alongside Shadow Elves! Such acts betray our sacrifices."
In a rare display of undead fury, she stormed out of the tent. But just as Mrs. Bernice set off, she saw massive Blood Wings unfurl against the night sky—Adel returning. Moments later, the wings descended into the camp.
The Shadow Female Baron released her grip, allowing the pale-faced Lisa—weak-kneed from high-speed flight—to stand shakily. Raising her head, Lisa saw the tall figure of the approaching Netherworld Knight.
"Mom?"
"Smack!"
The response to her call was a loud slap across her face, leaving Lisa clutching her cheek with an expression of sheer embarrassment—a "mom, love me once more" kind of look. Seeing Mrs. Bernice raise her hand for another strike, Adel stepped forward and grabbed her wrist.
She said:
"Lisa made mistakes, but I’ve already pulled her back on the right path. Aunt Bernice, she has recognized her errors and brought us crucial information.
The Governor’s will is taking root in the Dark Valley, but first, we need to complete a prelude task."
"What task?"
Bernice asked sharply. Adel shrugged in response, and amidst the chiming of the Core Bead issuing its instructions, she said to the Netherworld Knight:
"We need to rescue a Shadow Elf’s Weaver in Goat Man territory. It will likely be dangerous. As the Pioneering Group’s elite force, I am entrusting you to lead the warriors on this mission while I return to the valley to negotiate with the elders regarding sending envoys to Transylvania."
"Alright, I’ll prepare and set off immediately."
Bernice did not refuse.
She accepted the command with the decisive efficiency expected of a Netherworld Knight, while the surrounding players, upon receiving the "Rescue the Weaver" mission, eagerly got up, noisily gathering their companions in anticipation of "killing monsters and leveling up."
Watching this scene, Meckel’s expression turned peculiar. If he remembered correctly, hadn’t his mother-in-law just emphasized that half-elves of Shadow Valley must never ally with Shadow Elves?
Hey, mother-in-law!
What exactly are you planning to do here?
Oh, so when your daughter and son-in-law associate with the Shadow Elves, they get slapped, but when you go to rescue a bigwig among the Shadow Elves, it’s perfectly fine?
How is this not double standards, huh? Is this your lesson from Death itself? This Death clearly isn’t being very serious, is it?
"What are you looking at?"
Mrs. Bernice glared at her son-in-law and barked:
"Gather your things and come with me! Since you’ve already tricked my daughter into marrying you, you’ll have to take responsibility for it!"
