Chapter 1443: 486. Transylvania’s First Snow_2

"Governor, shall we go directly to where you reside, or would you like to take a turn around the city first?"

The Governor’s carriage was already waiting at the end of the tree-lined pathway, and Norman, the veteran who now served as Milian’s head of the Guard, routinely asked.

He still wore a mask to cover his severely injured face, but the black uniform he wore signified that he was no longer part of the Witch Hunters and had officially taken a position in the executive protection division, becoming an honored Transylvania civil servant.

This was Norman’s own choice.

In his words, he had grown weary of participating in wars for reasons he couldn’t understand; he lost much during the ten years of war, and now he simply wanted to live out the rest of his life in peace.

President Natalie was somewhat reluctant about this choice, but she did not hold back the veterans’ retirement applications.

Not just Norman, the veteran Porter also chose to leave the Witch Hunters.

It is said that he joined the pioneering team in the Dark Baron Territory, served as the captain of the militia there, adopted two orphans, and planned to cultivate his own farm in southern Transylvania.

It’s hard to imagine that this choice would come from the impetuous old Witch Hunter whose veins ran with fire. Although the war ended only four months ago, many people’s fates had undergone significant turns and changes.

"Just like before, take a round in the city then escort me home; you can also get off work earlier."

Milian climbed into the carriage and softly told her guards:

"In a few days, the Holy Blood festival will be celebrated, and I will give you a few days off."

"We have holidays, Governor, but safeguarding your security is our duty"

Norman responded solemnly, making Milian somewhat helpless.

She wanted to argue a bit, but before she could open her mouth, a sudden chill appeared at her nose, which made her look up in surprise to see snowflakes falling from the gloomy sky.

"It’s snowing! This year’s first snow is a bit late, but it has finally arrived."

The Governor sighed in relief, feeling an odd sense of relaxation inside.

It was as if a sign she had been waiting for had finally appeared, indicating that the rules of this land still operated as she remembered and hadn’t been affected by the dramatic changes of the past few months, meaning the purple rift hanging in the sky hadn’t impacted the deeper laws of this place.

"No need to go to the city, head to the grain storage outside the city."

Milian boarded the carriage, telling her guards:

"Based on my experience, after the first snow of the year, Transylvania’s climate will quickly turn cold, and in just half a month, the temperature will drop to quite a bad level, the hardest days of the year are approaching.

We need to make sure no one freezes or starves to death in our city this year."

"Forgive me for speaking frankly, Governor, but perhaps that concern may not exist."

Guard Norman, as he started the carriage, one hand on the handle of his waist, and another hand pulling the reins vigilantly looking around, responded:

"The executive office was already prepared for winter by autumn, and now all city residents have moved into gray houses, and blacksmiths have brought many boilers for heating water.

Although I don’t quite understand how the ’central heating’ designed for each building works, their confident demeanor means that our people will have a much better winter this year than before.

The storage outside the city is also full of grain, and the current functioning labor credit system should ensure that those willing to work can eat and dress warmly.

The city should thank them, and the city should also thank you."

"Norman, your honest praise makes me blush."

Milian sighed in the carriage:

"But it’s not my credit, I didn’t even participate in building a single house; I just sat in the office, looking at documents and making decisions.

It’s the people of this city who have rebuilt it by hand.

If they really are grateful to anyone, they only need to thank themselves and our Otherworldly Warriors, who brought us this not-so-small miracle."

Norman did not reply.

But from his posture, it seemed he might agree with that answer as well.

Although his old friend died in the battle of Morlan village, leaving him not enthusiastic about the Otherworldly Warriors, perhaps witnessing the changes they brought could lessen much of the old soldier’s resistance and regret.

The first snow in Transylvania was not gentle.

After Milian inspected the storage and was on her way home, heavy snow covered the entire sky, blanketing the still-rebuilding city in white frost.

The carriage rolled over the road leaving behind two tracks, and the Governor, feeling a bit of fatigue, looked through the window at the residential buildings along the roadside.

In those square, unattractive houses, lights had been turned on, their fluorescent glow gathered together illuminating the snowy night, like numerous fires dispelling the desolation of the cold.

Who could imagine that just three months ago this place was an irredeemable ruin?

"I did it!"

Inside the carriage, the Governor clenched her fists, whispering to herself in a voice only she could hear:

"I can make this city safely through this winter; I have not disappointed Murphy, Triss, or the warriors’ trust in me, the projects listed on the plan will be realized one by one, and when my statue stands in the most conspicuous place in this city, I shall face it without any guilt."
