Chapter 1371: 463. Are all the newbies in Transylvania monsters?

"Whoosh whoosh whoosh whoosh whoosh whoosh"

Conical projectiles pierced the air at high speed, emitting a bizarre wail, like strange birds sweeping across the sky.

The racket was immediately caught by the Necromancer leading his team through the swamp to execute an encircling maneuver.

Mounted on a Skeleton War Horse, the Necromancer tilted up his head, his gloomy hood gleaming with a cold blue Spiritual Fire. Despite his withered skin like that of a mummy, the features of his face were faintly discernible.

One could tell from his lofty nose bridge and deep-set eye sockets that this fellow was a Northerner in life.

Unlike the other Necromancers’ desiccated frames, this one’s broad physique was preserved even after his resurrection, which made him look exceptionally odd. Moreover, unlike other Necromancers, this one wore a sharp Bone Knife for close combat at his waist.

This made him seem more like a Netherworld Knight than a Necromancer.

He quickly noticed six peculiar objects from the sky trailing white smoke and descending in perfect parabolic trajectories toward his position. The war-experienced Necromancer instantly realized that something terrible was about to happen.

Although he had rarely seen such strange devices, he could roughly guess their purpose.

The Necromancer raised his Gloomy Rotting Staff and cast a Psionic Shield around himself, while also ordering the Elite Skeleton Army he controlled to brace with their shields.

The boon of an Undead creature’s superb executive function was demonstrated here to its fullest; in the blink of an eye, the entire military formation switched to defensive mode.

At the same time, those strange projectiles began their descent.

The buzzers attached to the missiles activated against the wind. As the trajectory dipped, the piercing scream intensified, as if invisible ghosts were swooping down from the sky to greedily devour the offerings to war.

"Dwarf artillery shells..."

The mounted Necromancer was unimpressed.

Although he had been dead for nearly two hundred years, in the time since his resurrection, he had learned of changes across the Continent.

In his era, Half-body Men and Dwarves had already employed such devices in battle. In the eyes of this Spiritual Energy user, although the weapons were spectacular, their lethality was clearly overestimated.

The notion of using artillery shells to kill the Undead was even more absurd!

The greatest advantage of Undead creatures was being sufficiently cheap and devoid of morale, which minimized the damage and fear inflicted by artillery.

When dealing with the Undead Sea, a proficiently used sword would be more useful than a Half-body Man rapid-fire gun.

Of course, the difference only allowed those daring to attack the Undead Army to choose their own means of death, nothing more.

With this contempt for the Half-body Men’s trinket, the Necromancer unflappably watched as six shells fell into the ranks before him.

It wasn’t that he didn’t want to take more precise action, but there was no need, and moreover, there wasn’t much time left to react.

He had been ambushed.

Regrettably, he wouldn’t be thrown into disarray by this. Now that the attackers had revealed their position, he just needed to dispatch several Skeleton vanguards with Cavalry to...

"Boom"

The eerie noise interrupted the Necromancer’s mental planning of a counterattack. As he watched in astonishment, the shells that hit the ground didn’t blast open stupidly to cause impact damage. Instead, with a muted explosion, they shot out blinding sparks like fireworks in all directions. Any Skeleton Soldier that touched these sparks immediately burst into flames.

These peculiar flames were effective exceedingly fast. In less than ten seconds, the targeting shots had resulted in the Necromancer noticing the loss of at least several dozen Elite Skeleton Warriors.

Their Undead enhancements should have been able to defend against ordinary flames, but against these strange "fireworks," they seemed totally ineffective.

These things...

They just looked like fire!

They were more dangerous than flames; they could cling to bones and burn until everything burnable was completely consumed.

So malicious!

It had to be some form of Alchemical Substance specifically effective against the Undead.

Before the Necromancer could deduce the outcome, a second barrage of six artillery shells was fired over again, the rapid repeat firing completely overturning the Necromancer’s stereotypical impression of artillery as clumsy devices.

This time it took precautions, commanding the Skeleton Army to immediately disperse, but thousands of troops in a forward formation weren’t easy to swiftly deploy in the swamp.

The deathly wail of the second volley of fire was even closer, making the Necromancer feel as if the screeching was unfolding right above his head. He looked up just in time to see a shell dragging white smoke and a strange wail plummeting, impacting only ten meters away, then the white smoke burst, scattering the "fireworks."

This shot was extremely accurate, landing right at the heart of the Necromancer’s formation, allowing him to witness firsthand those searing hot sparks falling like stars onto the precious Mage positions of his Skeletons.

Those with Psionic Shields fared better, while those who hadn’t managed to raise their shields in time began emitting white smoke upon contact with the light points.

The Death-enhanced bones were utterly unable to resist the attachment and burning of the scorching material. They didn’t feel pain, but the destruction of their bodies still posed significant hindrances to the Skeleton Soldiers.

The Necromancer watched as several Skeleton Mages attempted to cast Ice Storm to extinguish the strange flames on their bodies, only to collapse into the mud and water before completing their spell, as their bones were burned through.
