Chapter 134: 49. You’re screwed, let me tell you, Murphy is a petty person_1
The bustling rescue mission continued until the first light of dawn.
The good news was, because Cardman City was shrouded in chaotic Star Realm energy and sunlight was unable to penetrate it, the lady, a traditional vampire like her, could still freely move about. Moreover, last night’s rescue was very successful!
Three consecutive searches resulted in a staggering 409 people being rescued, doubling the population of the survivor’s camp.
The bad news was, the easy stage was now over.
The areas ahead were heavily shrouded in Star Realm shadows, an area little players like Murphy’s referred to as the "monster wilderness". The concentration of Star Realm shadows lurking there was so dense it could even extinguish torches, making it impossible for ordinary people to enter on a large scale.
The worse news was that, based on the lady’s in-depth investigation, she was certain that there were at least 200 signs of life just on the peripheral areas of those densely shadowed zones.
That is, there were still at least 200 more people waiting for external rescue.
And so, a choice was presented to Murphy.
"We’ve already saved plenty of people."
Having not slept all night, Milian was yawning continuously as she softly said to Murphy, who was looking at the map:
"I just spoke with a few appointed militia leaders. The survivors are very grateful for your help. They saw the dangerous Star Realm beasts and Shadow creatures with their own eyes last night.
Going deeper into the city will be dangerous, and there have been reports of many people fleeing into the labyrinth-like sewers, it’s impossible to launch large-scale rescue operations under these circumstances.
So, they can understand the choice you might make.
Even the sister of a nun asked me to tell you not to be too hard on yourself."
"How’s morale?"
Murphy asked, to which Milian nodded vigorously and replied:
"It’s soaring beyond my expectations!
I thought such actions would frighten them even more, but it turns out that rescuing more of their fellows did not unsettle them but instead instilled them with courage, stabilizing everyone’s mentality.
Some young people have even volunteered to join the search and rescue team. They’re the ones who still have family left in the city and are unwilling to give up."
"This proves that our actions are correct, Milian. The initial collective identity has been forged, it would be a pity to abandon it now."
Murphy glanced at the three markers on the map.
These were the locations of the three family warehouses he had learned about from Cui Si. They overlapped highly with the yet-to-be-rescued areas, giving Murphy an idea.
He said to Milian:
"Delegate a few of your militia leaders to select the people with the most resolute combat will. Organize them and hand over to Maxim to officially set up the ’Cardman Self-Rescue Army’.
Rest assured, I will not let them go to their deaths.
I’m planning to use fire to completely eliminate the residual Star Realm shadows in the rescued areas. I need them to establish a defense line outside these areas to assist my warriors in their upcoming blitz operations.
Those people surrounded by monsters are still alive!
We must attempt to rescue them one last time.
Explain the purpose and process of this operation to them and ensure they understand their duties.
If they retreat before my warriors do, they will be executed as deserters! There is no room for negotiation."
He glanced at the crimson hand pistol at Milian’s waist.
The weapon had not been fired last night, but things might be different going forward.
"I understand."
Milian took a deep breath and said:
"I know time is precious, I’ll be ready in two hours. I’ll grab a quick nap first."
"Mmm, go ahead."
Murphy patted Milian on the shoulder to encourage her, then called over Maxim.
This guy had been advancing bravely in the action last night. His cheeks were full of claw marks from Star Realm beasts, and there were scratches on his neck and cheeks. But thanks to his decent martial power and better armor and weapon, he wasn’t in any life-threatening danger.
"Maxim, I need you to command the ’Cardman Self-Rescue Army’ that Milian is organizing, and build a defensive line in front of the already explored areas."
The vampire drew a line on the map and said to the fatigued Maxim:
"You must hold out until my warriors conclude their breakthrough into the ’monster wilderness’ and place all those they rescue on the defensive line until the operation ends."
"Yes, sir!"
Maxim responded with a standard Blood Vulture salute, then raised his eyebrows and said:
"I have no doubt about the determination and courage of your warriors, but they are still lacking in power and with so few people, letting them enter there is practically the same as sending them to their deaths."
"The lady, Adel, and I will be with them."
Murphy waved his hand dismissively and said:
"My warriors are destined to do big things in the future, they must get used to intense battles as soon as possible. I’m also curious to see where their limits lie."
Look, here they come!"
The vampire pointed at the ragged tent where Wumeioge and his students were already getting up.
Their turn had come online, and it was about time for Lumina and her group’s game time to end. This allowed for a perfect shift change.
"Yo, Sister Lumi, what are you doing? Where did these little monkeys come from?"
Wumeioge, carrying his war halberd and rubbing his eyes, sauntered over to where a disheveled Lumina was playing with a group of children.
