"Uh, nothing."
Niu Niu coughed as he was questioned, and he said with all seriousness,
"I’m not a scout like you, I’m just here to protect you as your guard, so of course I wouldn’t understand all that. But seeing you so confident, I guess you must have come to some foolproof conclusion, so, can we leave now?"
At this point, Niu Niu shifted his shoulders uncomfortably and complained,
"Life in the swamp is awful; I’ve had enough of this damned environment. Even though not bathing doesn’t really cause any harm, I’m starting to stink.
If I can’t stand it, I really don’t know how a girl like you can bear it."
"What’s the big deal?"
Ambo laughed at Niu Niu’s "Brother Fu speech," and while packing up her gear into her backpack, she said,
"In the early stages of the ten-year war, we were sent to fight with the Mountain People in the forests of the Saxon Region. Although that was a forest, the environment was hardly better than the Polluted Swamp.
I remember squeezing into a cave with Natalie and somehow surviving two months there. After getting out of the forest alive, I felt like I had transcended.
You, who’ve been pampered all your life, will never understand that kind of harshness. You even consider not being able to bathe as torture. Niu Niu, you might be getting stronger, but your attitude hasn’t changed.
You’re still a rich boy in my eyes, not much different from a spoiled brat."
"Huh? Am I still considered a rich boy?"
Niu Niu huffed and stood up to help Ambo take down the surveillance equipment from the low branches, whispering,
"I’m already considered a rough guy back where I come from; if you let Little Wei Ming or ’Lady Shui’ live in the swamp for ten days without bathing, they’d probably go insane."
"That’s why I can never understand the kind of fairy-tale life you all live in your world."
Ambo sighed.
A few seconds later, she asked,
"So, Niu Niu, if I had been born in your world, what kind of life would I be leading now?"
"Let me think."
Niu Niu shouldered his pack and hopped down from the low branch, his combat boots sinking into the mud.
He naturally reached out to grab Ambo’s wrist and helped her down from the tree, even though Ambo was agile enough not to need Niu Niu’s help.
The two trudged through the mud towards the evacuation site to meet up with the other six teams of scouts scattered throughout the swamp and prepare to leave.
The swamp’s environment was, of course, atrocious, but it was quiet here; due to the presence of Plague Town nearby, the local swamp beasts had long since fled, and even the sounds of birds were lacking.
To avoid detection, Niu Niu and Ambo had to tread as lightly as possible, and after pondering for a dozen seconds, Niu Niu spoke to Ambo,
"If you were in our world, from the moment you were born, you would receive the safest protection from your parents, regular check-ups by professional pediatricians, and grow up in a warm home until you were three years old before starting your general education in kindergarten. Then elementary school, middle school, high school, university.
You could keep studying until your twenties when you could choose to further your education according to your interests and strengths, delve into the academic world, or choose to enter society and find a job to support yourself and your family.
Maybe you would encounter a dishonest boss, maybe due to mediocrity, you wouldn’t find opportunities to climb higher, but the basics of food and shelter would always be ensured.
Even a mediocre life could be lived in a way you wanted and that fit within reality.
You would find a husband who loves you.
You would start a family with him and have children of your own, caring for them the way your parents cared for you until they reached adulthood until you retired and enjoyed the twilight of your life, until your last journey is walked amid the mourning of family and friends.
Actually, there’s not much difference between there and here."
Niu Niu scratched his head and said,
"I can’t tell you what it feels like to live a lifetime there, after all, I haven’t even finished the first stage of my life yet, I’m still a poor student.
Don’t laugh, but I’m really confused about the future.
Part of my resistance towards my sister comes from her exceptionally impressive credentials; I feel that I will most likely not be able to reach my sister’s level in this lifetime.
So my grandfather wasn’t wrong when he called me rotten wood.
I feel like I’ve tried hard, but talent is something you just can’t do anything about."
Ambo didn’t respond.
She simply listened patiently, and only after Niu Niu expressed his concerns did Ambo burst out laughing, shaking her head and saying,
"Do you really think there’s no difference between the lives in the two worlds? Such a naive view, my warrior. My life here is completely different from what you imagine.
I’m an orphan.
I grew up at Hunter Camp No. 16 in the Emerald Green Forest of Antani. The villagers took good care of me, probably because my father died defending the village from a wild bear.
Though I don’t have many memories of hunger, a full meal wasn’t easy to come by when I was a child.
I recall at the age of four I could adeptly gather fruits and mushrooms in the forest, and playing wildly in the woods with He Lu and the other kids is my fondest childhood memory.
No pediatricians, no warm home, and none of the general education you dislike. I only learned to write my own name at the age of twelve under the Priest of Avalon, and since then I had always been helping out and doing chores at the Sanctuary of Avalon Church."
