Chapter 1275: 431. Failure in another world, Man!

Bernel City, the capital of the Kafuhoka region, was an important eastern stronghold of the already vanished nation when it was still part of the Posya Confederation.

It wasn’t known for its commerce but was very much in line with the characteristics of the Kafuhoka region, being the heart of grain distribution and trade throughout the Continent, with a massive amount of grain transported monthly to various regions of the Continent.

Even during the most difficult moments of the decade-long war, the grain trade of Bernel City was never interrupted.

After all, before the northerners had sent their troops, this place was a major rear area supporting the war.

Many important figures from the Posya Confederation took refuge here. However, the sudden betrayal and entry into the war by the Nordtov Kingdom disrupted the local order to some extent, an impact that still hadn’t wholly dissipated to this day.

When the Winter Wolf Army had just taken over Bernel City, the grain trade here was completely halted at one point, but just before the grain stored in the warehouses expired, a "good samaritan" appeared to relieve Her Majesty, the Wolf Queen, of all her troubles.

That good samaritan was Murphy.

Now, a massive amount of grain from Bernel City was being transported to Transia at a rate of twice a week, fulfilling part of the "rescue agreement" reached with the officials of the Nordtov Kingdom and the Governor’s District of Transia.

Thanks to this large-scale trade, the traditional trade of Bernel City had regained its vitality. The city wasn’t as prosperous as in its heyday, but for the newbies who came from Transia to ’see the world,’ it was much, much better than the wreck that was Transia.

"Wow, walking around this city reminds me of my travel to Budapest last year."

On the streets of Bernel City, the Star Soul Eagle, disguised with a hooded cape and carrying a bunch of purchased groceries, spoke to Brother Cat, who walked beside him with a sword on his back, constantly vigilant and scanning their surroundings:

"It resembles Eastern European style in culture, environment, and even architectural style—it’s definitely a city designed by the developers based on that region. And they didn’t just replicate a city from reality.

Because of the city’s need to transport grain, the streets here are wider and straighter, even the alleys are broader than those in other cities.

The overall design of the city is pretty simple though—just a residential zone and a trade zone. I’ve heard that outside the city, the road extends all the way to the docks upstream of the Kaderman River, and a significant part of the grain sent to Transia takes this water route.

If we weren’t short on time, we could have taken the water route back to enjoy the scenery along the way.

Although it can’t compare to the scale and development of modern cities, with a medieval backdrop, this would definitely be considered a super metropolis.

I bet even Cardman City at its most prosperous didn’t reach this level."

"Of course, I’ve read some books about local features at the Crimson Castle. During the Posya Confederation era, this city took on the task of transporting the entire nation’s grain with its resources.

It became the heart of the Posya Confederation because it possessed the abundant resources of the Kafuhoka region, while Westerburg was of course the brain of that decaying giant. As for Cardman City... perhaps it was once where the Posya Confederation hid its filth...

Well, its straight gut, anyway."

Brother Cat’s gaze continuously swept over the crowds coming and going on both sides of the street. Watching the street vendors pushing their wares and the not-so-many people haggling, he said in a low voice to the Star Soul Eagle, who was curious about everything:

"Don’t look back, we’re being followed. Three guys have been tailing us for two streets now. They’re taking turns following us, but I can sense their presence."

"Hm?"

Star Soul Eagle immediately became alert.

Even though he was new to the game, his professionalism as an elite athlete was beyond question. Within a few breaths, he had put himself into combat readiness, continuing to move forward while asking:

"Who are they?"

"How would I know; it’s my first time here too."

Brother Cat shook his head and continued:

"But I guess they’re probably from the Snegov family. They are the Local Snake around here after all, so it’s normal for us outsiders to be noticed. This cheks out—there must be something wrong with the Snegovs!

These creeps probably know about the shady stuff they’ve been up to in Transia has been exposed, and now they seem to have a bit of a scorched earth policy. Just don’t know what the local Thieves Guild has to say about this?"

"The situation shouldn’t be that bad."

Star Soul Eagle frowned and said:

"If the local Thieves Guild had been completely corrupted, we would have faced assassination or attacks upon entering Bernel City. Isn’t it said that the Thorn Clan has already issued them a challenge?"

Brother Cat didn’t answer.

He just made eye contact with Star Soul Eagle, signaling him to pick up the pace. Two more followers had joined the ones behind them; if they kept wandering around, it was hard to say whether they wouldn’t be attacked right on the street.

While Brother Cat wasn’t afraid for himself, Star Soul Eagle, who had not yet passed the Black Iron ordeal, clearly wasn’t capable of handling high-intensity combat.

The two quickened their pace and managed to reach the Thorn Clan’s residence headquarters in Bernel City before their pursuers could encircle them. As they stepped into the ancient tower-like building, Brother Cat turned to glance back.
