Chapter 1251: 423. The Maginot Line officially breaks ground!
"You look much more haggard compared to when we parted last night, Major... ah, Colonel,"
In the office at the Blood Vulture Corridor, Governor Morphy sat upright, hands crossed propping up his chin, and said to the military-clad Colonel Fraser and Major Ron:
"It appears that both of you have had a strenuous journey, and did not rest well last night in our remote region, this is a failure on my host’s part."
"It’s not related to your reception, Governor Morphy."
Colonel Fraser tried to conceal his emotions, but facing such a situation for the first time in his life made it difficult to act nonchalant despite his best efforts.
To avoid further awkwardness, the dark-eyed colonel delved straight into the topic:
"My adjutant and I came today to discuss the placement of our military observation team. Marshall Loren has ordered us to choose our location ourselves and take on the responsibility for the soldiers of the Goldenrod Kingdom during the Black Disaster.
Please understand, we are not part of Transia’s armed forces and are not controlled by you during wartime.
Thus, we need to clarify our authority in advance to avoid any uncomfortable situations later."
"Though I am not a soldier, I fully understand your concerns."
Governor Morphy did not dwell overly on this issue. Pointing to a map hanging on the wall of his office, he said:
"Even if I were to relinquish this control to you, I reckon your choices on the battlefield between the Dark Baron Territory and the Polluted Swamp would still be limited.
The Klim Fortress controls a quarter of the entire front’s width on its own. Meanwhile, our nearly completed Maginot Line encompasses much of the rest.
Even Marshall Loren himself would only have the option of setting up camp in the areas to the west of the front.
This is our suggestion for you: you could establish your defenses near Lake Xiuerpres, close to the Kato area. This would allow you direct access to supplies from the Kato area, or else you’d be isolated deep in the Polluted Swamp to establish an outpost.
On this note, I must share some important information brought back by our Transian scouts."
Governor Morphy picked up a document from his desk and handed it to Fraser, who glanced at it and became more serious.
He quickly read through the document and then passed it to his adjutant, Major Ron. Ron, coming from a military family, felt a chill when he saw the document’s first line.
Dark Mountain Jackals’ Vanguard already present in the Polluted Swamp, and they’ve even formed a massive undead skeleton army?
What the hell kind of dreadful pre-war conflict is this?
Does that mean, once the observation team camps at the front, they will most likely get immediately involved in the war between Transians and the Jackals?
This made Major Ron deeply anxious.
He knew well that although the officers of the observation team had prepared to partake in a brutal war, the war coming so rapidly was still beyond these young men’s expectations, suggesting Marshal Loren’s assessment of the situation was overly optimistic.
"The steps of the Black Disaster are faster than we imagined," Colonel Fraser said solemnly.
"So, there’s not much time left for us to adapt to this harsh land, is there?"
"To put it correctly, I recommend that you skip the ’adaptation’ phase altogether,"
Governor Morphy shrugged his shoulders and in the gentlest tone spoke the most brutal words,
"Unless you wish to stay safely in the rear, the moment you step onto the front lines of the Polluted Swamp, you will have to take up arms and fight a deadliest battle against the ferocious Jackal Warlocks and their skeleton army.
Moreover, as an obligation of allies, I must remind you that we will be deploying our elite forces in large numbers into the Polluted Swamp within fifteen days.
That means we will decisively expel and attack this Jackal clan entrenched in the swamp and attempt to bring this strategically significant Polluted Swamp under our control.
You are free to participate or observe or even prepare to mercilessly mock us – all these I can accept. But what I absolutely do not want is the fourth and most foolish option – to ’drag your feet’ or ’trip us up’!"
"Soldiers of the Goldenrod Kingdom never cower. Nor would we do such things to our allies; there’s no benefit in it for us," Major Ron said gravely.
Governor Morphy glanced at the stout young man with a vampiric characteristic of gloom and haughtiness, lightly saying:
"Save that statement until after you’ve proven yourselves on the battlefield, gentlemen. We Transians distinguish friends from enemies simply; if you kill even one Jackal from the Dark Mountain Range, then you are our allies in this war.
I hope you can act swiftly enough to keep pace with the war that is about to unfold.
Lastly, regarding the matter of your stationing, leave it to Major Ron and Governor Milian to discuss. Colonel Fraser, I need you to stay here.
I have some more important matters to discuss with you – as Governor of Transia, I guarantee that it’s of great significance not only to the Goldenrod Kingdom but also to the Cape Family."
With Morphy having laid down the state of affairs so directly, Fraser was in no position to refuse, and not having to face Governor Milian, who had just dealt him a severe blow, oddly gave him a sense of relief.
