"Ximu, launch an Illumination Skill over there."

"Got it!"

Ximu once again swung his Bone Staff, sending a precise and flamboyant Illumination Skill’s light orb to its maximum range ahead, finally landing at the end of the passageway. The eerie blue light illuminated the surroundings, revealing the hideous faces of the monsters that had rushed into the second level of the sewers from the opened cracks of the underground cavern.

In the flickering glow that scattered the darkness, the end of the second-level sewer junction, which should have been empty, was now teeming with over a dozen gruesome Ghouls and intangible resentful spirits.

Ximu’s accurate Illumination Skill startled them, prompting these creatures to let out a chorus of horrific howls before they pounced towards them under the dumbstruck gaze of the demon Eight Elites’ Warlocks.

This uproar was like a spark thrown onto a powder keg, instantly setting ablaze the thousands of Undead roaring beneath the cavern’s cracks.

The attraction from the scent of life and the Ghouls’ roars marked the cruel and frenzied beginning of yet another "Night of the Ghouls" in the sewer that had been quiet for over a month, and the unfortunate Eight Elites and even unluckier newbie Manged Hair seemed to be the first sacrifices offered to this mad night.

"Run!"

Zou Lan, the quickest to react, drove his Undead Servants forward to block the way, and turned his ferocious face to the petrified Manged Hair yelling:

"Get to the surface! Send a message in the world channel! Hurry! Dog Planner is stirring up trouble."

"Oh, awooo, I’m on it! Hold on!"

Manged Hair perfectly exemplified the panicked behavior of a city dweller facing a horrific crisis.

He turned and ran, stumbled and fell, but didn’t dare to look back or stop, scrambling along the path they’d come from on all fours. His mind was so scattered that he couldn’t even realize he had switched classes, holding an Acidic Hand that could have been thrown.

He was scared out of his wits.

The brothers of the demon Eight Elites were fairly loyal.

They didn’t abandon the newbie but organized a retreat under the cover of four Coffin Bearers and eight skeletal shield holders, along with other Undead Servants, while the three Cunning Magicians continuously cast Slowing Spells to hinder the advancing enemy.

Their response and coordination were near perfect.

However, not having been forged in the Black Iron trials meant that whether in combat strength or Spiritual Energy reserves, they were unable to cope with this sudden attack.

As Manged Hair, with trembling hands, climbed out of the sewer, running aimlessly in the streets and shouting about the Ghoul invasion, the members of the Eight Elites finally made it back to the defenses between the first and second levels, at the cost of five members’ demise.

The assassins of the Blood Rat Gang and the veteran soldiers of the People’s Army stationed there had already completed their defensive preparations.

As the unfortunate duo, Basa and Ximu, sat gasping for breath on the ground, appreciating their narrow escape from death, the Cadman People’s Army lieutenant gave an order, and over thirty Molotov cocktails were hurled forward.

Flames soared into the sky.

Doris, lurking in the shadows, watching all this unfold, nodded in satisfaction. She grabbed her Calculating Pearl and, for the first time as the leader of a power, issued a warning for a triggered random event.

It was her first time issuing a task on this scale, but she wasn’t nervous; she had practiced long enough to ensure she could fulfill her duty perfectly.

"Ding"

Little Brother Fu, who had just learned a skill from Sir Morphy’s office and was about to leave, stared in astonishment at the Calculating Pearl’s notification in his hand:

[Plot Event: ’Return of the Night of the Ghouls’ has been triggered!

Event Description: Brave warriors of Crimson Castle! This is a message from the Blood Rat Gang. The despicable Undead in our guarded underground caverns have broken their seals under the influence of an unknown force. These mad creatures are swarming out of their caverns in large numbers, attempting to invade the sewers and unleash slaughter in the city.

I!

The leader of the Blood Rat Gang, Doris, hereby issues a summon to all warriors within Crimson Castle: those brave souls willing to defend the city, immediately head to the sewer lines and assemble at the various defensive positions!

We, the shadow walkers, will become the first line of defense to guard the city and protect our homes tonight!

Event Requirement: Players participating in this event must hold out until the reinforcements from the Cadman People’s Army and the Avalon Church Witch Hunters arrive!

Event Rewards: A large amount of Blood Rat Gang reputation, the ’King of Ghouls’ series of equipment, and the ’Shadow of the Undead’ questline is unlocked.]

"Another ghoul invasion?" exclaimed Little Brother Fu in shock, "How is this exactly the same as the last ghoul disaster? Wasn’t the Plague Rat King and the monsters he created already exterminated?"

"That’s precisely the point—it suggests that another force has set its sights on us, my apprentice."

Behind Little Brother Fu, Sir Morphy had already donned his cloak and grasped his staff-sword, speaking in a subdued, brooding voice:

"The mess left by the Plague Rat King has been exploited by those lurking in the shadows. Fortunately, we dealt with a portion of the ghouls in advance, otherwise tonight’s incident would have developed into a disaster.

Come with me!

My apprentice, it’s time to test your progress on the path of the Summoner."

"Actually, you could also test my swordsmanship."

Little Brother Fu, with a playful smirk, clasped the staff-sword at his waist.

His attire at the moment was strikingly similar to Murphy’s, clearly a deliberate attempt to imitate his mentor’s image. Regrettably, while the appearance of attire could be mimicked, the handsome and dashing presence of Sir Morphy was, before activating a ’face customization feature’, an impossible trait to replicate.

But Little Brother Fu didn’t mind; with his own cream-faced young look, he held onto his sword hilt and said:

"In learning from you, I have become not only a summoner but also an excellent swordsman, and tonight, my blade will swing in your name!"

"Ah, what beautiful courage!"

Murphy observed his apprentice, whose ’middle-schooler syndrome’ was flaring up, and internally he ranted about how the lad was increasingly showing RP tendencies. However, outwardly he expressed nothing but pride as he said:

"Except for lacking a pair of wings, you’re no different from an elite vampire, my apprentice. Have you truly not considered joining the Blood Vulture Clan? I really need someone with your talents."

"Turning into a vampire would mean I can no longer use my Natural Psychic Power to soothe the spirits of my Scorpion Lion, Sir."

Little Brother Fu sighed with regret:

"There’s a give and take in everything. Even as I walk the path of Nature in Avalon, I remain your loyal warrior. I just hope Avalon doesn’t punish my disloyalty for my loyalty."

"It won’t."

Murphy smiled enigmatically.

He spread his wings and flew into the sky, then softly added:

"I’m quite familiar with Avalon; I believe the God of Nature will grant this small favor to me."
