Chapter 1068: 362. New Handyman at the Adventurer Guild_2
"I’d only heard about these zealots before, but this was the first time I actually saw someone who stretched the ’faith war’ string so tight."
"No wonder Old Eugene always says that we young people aren’t very sincere in our faith."
"I thought he was just nitpicking, but by his standards, probably everyone on the Transia Lands besides him and Madam Jules would be considered insincere."
"Yet, even Madam Jules isn’t as fanatical as he is."
"Old Eugene is a special case."
President Natalie also sighed and said to her good sister:
"I don’t know much about his past either, but I’ve heard Mother Mary Ann mention once that he is an islander from the Misty Coast.
It’s said that he was one of the orphans brought back to the headquarters in Glamour by the Grey Knight during a Church operation, that his homeland had undergone some terrible event, and he was the last survivor.
Since he was a child, Old Eugene believed that the God of Avalon was the only true savior of the world, and his zeal and sincerity are considered quite extreme even within Glamour Holy Land.
If nothing unexpected happened, Old Eugene would have been part of the Grey Knights by now, but the ten-year war has made a mess of everyone’s fate.
He’s actually one of the lucky ones.
After experiencing the abandonment by the Divine Spirits, many with similar experiences to his had gone mad, but Eugene managed to keep his sanity with his sincere faith and survived the brutal war until now."
"To us and to him, the reconstruction of the Avalon Church in Transia holds two completely different meanings, and I have no doubts that Eugene would give everything for his faith without hesitation."
"But as you said, his stubbornness and vigilance can make people uncomfortable at times, yet you and I both know that for a system like the Church, the existence of people like Eugene is necessary."
"He doesn’t even know how those warriors converted to the faith of the God of Avalon ’preach’."
Ambo whispered:
"I once followed Bull Bull to listen to a sermon by that not-so-serious ’Big Bird Spin Spin Spin’ Group’s so-called ’Priest,’ and I’m not exaggerating when I say if Old Eugene heard those guys’ wild interpretations of doctrine, I reckon he might draw his sword to cut someone down on the spot.
Those guys have their own crazy explanations of Subspace, inventing the simplest and most superficial good vs. evil dichotomy to create some so-called Subspace Divine Spirit, and they claim that the enemy of the Avalon God is an Evil God named ’Na Gou.’
The latter is plotting to use filthy plagues to destroy the world, and only those who keep the natural faith can purify themselves and others when the Great Plague comes."
"It sounds like some bizarre story.
But their descriptions somehow come with straightforward and understandable logic, and a lot of the followers who came from the Kato area recently have been spreading these little stories."
"Natalie, we really need to deal with this, or they’re going to create a new branch of doctrine."
"And that’s not even the scariest part!
"Those audacious guys, while making up stories about the Avalon God, have also assigned strange backgrounds to other Divine Spirits, saying that the God of the North Wind fights tyranny with courage, Mother Earth counters the ’Lord of Capricious Evil’ with steadfastness and immutability, and that wonderful Strength will be born within mechanics.
"And that Strength will eventually stand in opposition to lust."
"It’s just too outrageous!"
Ambo spoke animatedly, but she soon noticed Natalie looking at her strangely, which made Ambo uncomfortably retort:
"Is there something dirty on my face?"
"No, I’m just curious; if you really think those guys are making things up, why do you know their ridiculous stories so well?"
"It seems I have a serious ’heretic’ by my side, and judging by your delighted demeanor, listening to those warriors’ priests tell stories must be much more interesting than listening to Old Eugene preaching, right?"
"Uh, I can’t deny that."
Ambo shrugged and said:
"You know, I wasn’t exactly a sincere believer before, and if I hadn’t gotten caught up in the ten-year war, I probably would have gone back to my hometown to get married and have children by now.
"The Antani District is one of the few peaceful places on the Continent of Strife."
"Maybe you would even take your warrior Bull Bull back with you, right?"
Natalie added quietly:
"You’ve been spending all your time apart from your daily training and helping in the Sanctuary with him... Ambo! You’re being a bit too proactive.
"You are a girl; you should be a bit more reserved."
"Sigh, I’m about to go on a reconnaissance mission to the Polluted Swamp, and I might not be back for over a month, so I’ll give it some thought. Stop bringing it up; my head hurts."
Ambo covered her face and ran out, leaving Natalie to sigh.
She was about to enter the Blood Eagle Corridor with the information that the Adventurer Guild had collected about the refugee settlement in the past few days when she turned around only to see Ambo cheerfully running to be with Bull Bull, who had just come online. That tall warrior was carrying his deputy on his back as if they were children frolicking.
"Is he really naive, or is he just pretending?"
"These people from another world... They are all so cunning, it’s really difficult for someone with Ambo’s character to escape their clutches."
"Maybe I should have a talk with He Lu?
"After all, He Lu is a Psychic, much more rational than Ambo."
