Chapter 1066: The reality is a complete mess..._3

"It seems that the establishment of Torrent Castle is just around the corner."

Murphy smiled, shut down the forum, stretched lazily, and then, with Cui Si in his arms, entered into the quiet slumber of deep night.

After he had fallen asleep, Cui Si’s eyes suddenly opened in his arms.

Blood Vulture Duke, still a bit tipsy, but a lot more steady than when she had been walking earlier, looked up quietly at Murphy, who was deep in sleep. She reached out and brushed his shoulder-length hair aside, curling her lips and muttering,

"Coward!"

Under the calm night sky, Teacher Li, getting out of the taxi, limped with his cane toward a rural courtyard.

He didn’t knock but took out his key and unlocked the door himself.

The yard was silent; two well-kept Border Collies eyed the visitor warily but wagged their tails and bounded up to greet him once they recognized Teacher Li.

Clearly, he was a regular visitor to this courtyard.

"Shh."

Teacher Li stroked the heads of the two dogs and signaled for them to be silent. Under their guidance, he passed through the well-kept garden into the master bedroom, about to turn on the light but then he heard a voice from the inner room.

"Why are you coming at this time? Couldn’t sleep and came looking for a drink with me?"

"How come you’re not asleep?"

Old Lee asked in surprise, then turned on the light and saw a man sitting in a wheelchair, wheeling himself out from the inner room.

This man was about the same age as Teacher Li but from the waist down, he was a void where legs should have been, a testament to an unimaginable past for anyone else.

But his spirit was still good.

Though his face showed signs of age, he kept himself tidy, with an air of a gentleman in his shirt, sweater, and jacket, with a bookmarked book on the table beside him.

Friedrich Nietzsche’s "The Birth of Tragedy."

A high-brow piece of literature few laypeople would have the interest to read, worn from frequent handling. Anyone engrossed in such a book surely wasn’t a "regular person."

On the coat rack by the door hung a crisp suit and comfortable home clothes, the former encased in a protective bag while the latter was evidently worn often.

He looked at Teacher Li, a smile appearing on his face, and said,

"Well, since you’re here, would you make me some supper? I can’t be bothered to do it myself."

"Sure."

Old Lee said little and headed to the kitchen to get busy.

Before long, a bowl of porridge and two dishes were served to the bedroom. While his friend ate, Teacher Li, sitting nearby, lit a cigarette and said,

"I’ve encountered something strange these past few days..."

"Oh? Worth dropping by just to share with me?"

The man in the wheelchair laughed, then said,

"Go on, I’m listening. It’s not like I’ve got anything better to do."

"I got a gaming helmet that allows me to go into a virtual reality game, and today in the game I beat a really tough guy."

Teacher Li spoke, blowing smoke rings,

"Do you think I’m dreaming?"

"If you could make up such a wonderful joke, you wouldn’t have ended up without a girlfriend in college."

The man in the wheelchair scoffed at that.

After another sip of porridge, he took a handkerchief and wiped his mouth, then said,

"Go back, I’m not interested in what you’re saying, it’s all fake! Old Lee, you cannot convince me to abandon reality for some satisfaction you think I’ve always been seeking in the virtual.

I’ve told you many times, I’m quite content with my life as it is."

"Content my ass!"

Old Lee cursed,

"I thought of you first when I found something good, and this is your attitude?

I’ve paved the way for you; the developers over there said they need a legal expert to help with the storyline advancement.

I’m new to the game and don’t understand much.

But I heard the actions there are player-led; that territory is still in an ’arbitrary’ phase and they need your knowledge and professional experience.

You can even use what you learned in the first half of your life to help some people. Maslow’s theory, the one you used to talk about when you were young, isn’t self-actualization what you’ve always craved for most of your life?"

"The last person who said they needed my help personally drove into me and left me like this!"

The man in the wheelchair spoke somberly,

"It even dragged you down, when you were just a step away from your dream, weren’t you?

My overly successful defense ruined the future and dreams of two people just because I sought to protect my client while upholding my own principles.

You never blamed me, because we are friends.

But I feel I don’t need a second chance..."

"You said it yourself, you owe me a dream."

Old Lee shrugged his shoulders and stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray.

He continued,

"So repay me with one. Just apply and take a look; if you’re not satisfied you can always come back, no one’s forcing you. And most importantly..."

Teacher Li hesitated, then lowered his voice and said,

"I feel like it’s not completely ’fake’ over there."

"Hmm?"

The man in the wheelchair looked at him with surprise, and Teacher Li continued,

"I can’t describe the feeling, but I know you, the smart one, can definitely help clear up my doubts. Many people have gone in... I don’t know if it’s good or bad, and I’m now one of them.

I think we adults have a responsibility to keep an eye on those impetuous youngsters.

I really need your help!"
