Chapter 602: Chapter 601 Imperial Capital Alert
In the night sky, Shao Zifeng sat cross-legged on Jingjing, the ice elements entangling around him shielding against the invasive night wind.
Having initiated the "Bonding Reaction," his eyes, like Jingjing’s, were sparkling and translucent, yet they held an indifference that Jingjing’s did not possess.
"Woo~"
The grand white gauze fins danced and swayed in the moonlight, reflecting a bright luster, and Jingjing’s song was ethereal and melodious, trying to soothe Shao Zifeng’s emotions.
Today had been an undeniably terrible day for Shao Zifeng, the sudden appearance of ’Wave Riding’ had caught him somewhat off guard.
Being of the same era as True Spirit, ’Wave Riding’s’ strength was unquestionable. Although in True Spirit’s words, it seemed unworthy of mention, but that was from the perspective of the East Desolate clan’s powerful beings. It was like a college student looking down on another college student for poor grades, a primary school student can’t just follow suit.
Shao Zifeng would always remember the shock of first seeing True Spirit, feeling as if he would be reduced to ashes if it willed so, and what was frightening was that such a powerful being claimed to be unskilled in combat.
The more he thought about it, the more oppressive he felt, facing this unknown existence. It seemed he could only seek True Spirit’s help.
But before that, Shao Zifeng looked down from high above at the imperial city under a thin layer of clouds, as dazzling as a river of stars, his hand wrapped in ice elements resting on Jingjing’s soft head.
As soon as they made contact, a rush of affection and reliance flooded in.
"Woo~"
"I’m with you~"
Feeling Jingjing’s intention, Shao Zifeng’s gemstone-like radiant eyes softened a bit.
The effect of empathy was mutual; surely Jingjing sensed the worries in his own heart. Although the little one didn’t know what Shao Zifeng was afraid of, to it, the greatest fear was boundless solitude, thus showing the significant weight of the words "I’m with you."
Shao Zifeng gently caressed its smooth skin, and the anxiety in his heart gradually dissipated.
"Woo woo woo~~~~ Woo woo~~~"
Just then, the piercing sound of an urgent alert tore through the night sky, and the imperial city, which was gradually settling, instantly boiled over again.
Shao Zifeng’s facial expression changed slightly, and a frosty blue light swirled in his eyes.
"Woo~"
Jingjing spread its broad fins and dived toward the central venue.
...
Beep beep—
The streets of the imperial city were jammed with countless private cars; the incessant honking filled the air with tension.
Ma Jiaming repeatedly pressed the horn hard, half his body leaning out of the car window to look ahead, his face etched with anxiety and impatience.
In the passenger seat sat a middle-aged woman in pajamas, rubbing her eyes in a drowsy state: "Honey, what’s happening in the middle of the night, an earthquake?"
"If only it were an earthquake." Ma Jiaming leaned out again to survey the situation: "You’re not a native of the imperial city, so you might not know. Over a decade ago, when the mutant creatures went on a rampage, these kinds of situations were common here."
Ma Jiaming held a cigarette in his mouth, his hands searching for something on his person.
The middle-aged woman glanced at him with disapproval, took a lighter, and lit the cigarette for him: "I keep telling you to quit."
Ma Jiaming took a deep puff and then snuffed out the cigarette against the car.
The woman said with a touch of distress: "Ah, the car just got changed..."
"Well, it’s still uncertain whether we’ll get through this or not." Ma Jiaming looked at his wife with some pity: "This is the imperial city’s emergency evacuation alarm. It’s been over a decade, and this is the first time it’s been sounded."
Upon hearing his words, the woman became a bit nervous, "Hu... hubby, you’re not trying to scare me, are you? Besides, where do we go for an emergency evacuation?"
"The wartime shelter, there’s a mountain near the First Military District, the very one you wanted to pick buns from last time. It has been almost hollowed out underneath, I’ve been in there a few times when I was young..."
Before he could finish, the shrill sound of the alarm rang out in the night sky once again. Ma Jiaming pushed the car door open, "We can’t just waste time here anymore, let’s go on foot."
"But..." The woman hesitated with an uncertain expression but still followed him out of the car.
Ma Jiaming, pulling his wife, weaved through the streets and alleyways. As a savvy local who had grown up in the capital, he knew every turn and corner, and to avoid the crowded pedestrians, he led his wife into a commercial street. Many people thought this street led to the city center, but he knew there was a back door of a restaurant that could save a lot of distance.
The street was filled with parked cars, some with their doors left ajar and hazard lights flashing, yet eerily empty of any passengers.
The middle-aged woman, growing increasingly nervous, clutched Ma Jiaming’s arm tightly and hurried along beside him.
Bang!
Just then, a loud noise erupted not far from them, causing the woman to scream.
Ma Jiaming quickly embraced the woman, turning his head towards the source of the noise. He saw a man in a suit spread-eagled on the roof of a car, with crimson blood gushing from his mouth and nose; though he was not yet dead and seemed to be mouthing something.
Ma Jiaming’s heart tightened, and he covered his wife’s eyes with his hand, whispering, "Let’s move."
Boom!
They hadn’t gone far when the road in front of them suddenly exploded, the violent shockwave instantly overturning several cars and hurling the Ma couple through the air.
A few scattered citizens nearby screamed and ran away upon witnessing this scene.
Ma Jiaming felt as if his bones had come apart. He struggled to open his eyes and saw someone staggering towards them. The person’s eyes were black and purple, and his face was covered with grotesque twisted lines.
Apparently, because of the fall from a height, one of his legs was broken, and he was dragging it painfully forward.
Seeing this, Ma Jiaming quickly looked at his wife, only to find she had already fainted, unresponsive to his calls.
As the figure drew closer and closer, Ma Jiaming gritted his teeth and got up from the ground to guard in front of his wife, holding a broken piece of pavement and shouting at the figure, "Don’t come any closer!"
The figure, as if unable to understand, continued to contort his face and walk towards them.
"Dammit, die!" Ma Jiaming, enduring the pain in his body, swung the brick at the figure’s head.
Bang!
The brick shattered completely, the figure’s head jerked sideways, and dark red blood sprayed from the top of his head.
Ma Jiaming backed away a few steps, his eyes fixed intently on the wavering man, his right hand trembling slightly from the recoil.
The man slowly turned his head, the blood quickly soaking his white shirt crimson. His purple-black eyes glinted ferociously, veins in his face bulging, then he let out an inhuman roar and lunged at Ma Jiaming.
Ma Jiaming thought to run but thinking of his wife behind him, he roared, "Come on!"
Then he spread his arms and faced the onslaught head-on.
"Jingjing, Wave Riding!"
"Wu~"
The ethereal, melodious sound of whale song rose into the air, and Ma Jiaming watched as a massive water element gathered in front of him, accompanied by the sound of waves.
