Chapter 261: Chapter 123: Smiling Corpse Mountain, Twilight Three-headed Dragon (Seeking Monthly Tickets)_4
"How would any of you understand the pain of losing a child? We just looked away for a moment and all our children were attacked by demons, turned into bloody, mangled corpses. My Second Child was so well-behaved...always so obedient. Now, no matter how much I call, he no longer responds."
"It was the Village Chief...the Chief gave us hope. He paid any price to find the old resurrection ritual. Even if it meant bearing the weight of this sins, he wanted to help us bring our children back. And he succeeded. Were it not for you, the ceremony would have been successful, and my child would have already been home."
Gary Smith responded indifferently to this, even finding it slightly amusing. Just because it’s for their children, they can sacrifice other adventurers? Aren’t they someone else’s children too?
The other villagers were also stirred up, shouting:
"Chief, we’ll stand by you and bear the consequences."
"Chief, it’s all our fault, you’re innocent. When the time comes, we’ll confess to the Alliance."
"..."
"Everyone..."
The Village Chief, listening to the villagers’ shouts, couldn’t help but let his tears flow. He pleaded to Gary:
"Please, I beg you. Spare these poor souls who have lost their children. All of this...all of this is my fault..."
"It indeed is your fault!"
Gary nodded, responding seriously:
"You’re overdoing it with your acting, aren’t you? You’re not the real Village Chief, Maurice Ash...what are you trying to relate to here?"
When his words fell, the entire place turned deathly silent. The villagers, who were previously shouting until their faces turned red, quieted down as if their throats were choked.
Even the onlooking Priest of the Netherland was stunned.
Not the real Village Chief? What does this mean?
The Village Chief himself was taken aback, a puzzled expression on his face. He asked, "I’m not me? What does that mean?"
The previously buzzing man couldn’t help but retort: "If he’s not the Village Chief then who is he?"
Gary shook his head and looked at the Village Chief, who didn’t seem to be lying. He calmly stated:
"As an old man, and one who has been living near a graveyard laden with nether soil for such a long time, your hands don’t have a single callus. What’s that about? You’ve undergone a high-level life transition? But if you want to prove it to me, you can do that. Just show me your Beast Master Space."
Earlier, Gary had noticed that while the Village Chief’s hands were slightly stained black, the underlying fair skin was clearly visible with well-defined lines, absolutely not characteristic of a farming peasant.
Of course, it could be understandable if the Chief had been living in luxury, but when he summoned his three Tombstone Hounds, he didn’t use his BeastMaster Space which made Gary suspicious. So, he activated the Eye of Truth, and the information he received was...
[???]
The Eye of Truth had only encountered such a situation three times before; once with the Soul-Devouring Demon Cloud which seemed to surpass the Overlord level of existence, the second time with the White Fox, and the third with the Club President’s shielding ability.
The common denominator between them all was that each one was beyond the limits of Gary’s investigation. Although this time, he was barely scraping the bottom of the barrel of his investigative limits.
Despite this, it wasn’t an ability that the Chief of a small place like Border Tomb Village should possess. Otherwise, why resort to conspiracies, furtive tricks, and backstabbing games with the Netherworld Cult? Why not just turn around, face them, and squash them outright?
Given that the villagers believe their children were on the verge of successful resurrection, it suggests that the ritual itself must be of high rank, not just one of those often trotted out rituals. Moreover, from what the Netherworld Priest had implied, he seemed to have control over the entire cemetery’s corpses.
If he had such ability, would Border Tomb Village remain a tiny village threatened with extinction at any given moment by a branch of the Netherworld Sect?
Wouldn’t it be much better to elevate the place to a Town or City, and focus on growth and prosperity?
Putting everything together, it left only one possibility.
This Village Chief was a fake or simply put...
Unbeknownst to him, he had been replaced by an unknown life form possessing a shielding ability.
It must be some sort of high-level shield ability, but their strength shouldn’t be powerful enough to be insurmountable. Otherwise, they would have already pushed through everything.
While the villagers thought that Gary was merely trying to slander their Chief, they didn’t retort. Instead, a seed of doubt was sown into their hearts.
There were many intelligent people among the villagers who subconsciously started pondering when had their Village Chief become so capable...
First, he came up with an ancient ritual. Then, he outmaneuvered the Netherworld Sect. The current Chief, with his strategic brilliance, certainly seemed different from the simple and slow-thinking man they used to know.
The more they thought, the stronger the indefinable fear became.
Gary spoke dismissively, "If you want to prove you’re still Maurice Ash, then summon your Beast Master Space."
As soon as he finished speaking, the cropped-haired young man’s eyes reddened as he stared at the Village Chief, urging, "Yeah, Chief, you summon it, and let him have a look. Even if we have to die, we can’t let him slander us!"
Fear seized him at that moment...
If the Village Chief was not the Village Chief, then what had they been doing recently... were they really resurrecting the children?
"What’s so hard about that? If I am me, how could I have turned into someone else?"
Maurice Ash nodded confidently, preparing to summon. But then, in the very next moment, he froze, mumbling to himself:
"Where did my BeastMaster Space go?"
When his words fell, there was an uproar, and everyone’s face changed color.
Even the Priest of the Netherland’s face changed.
Maurice Ash was hit the hardest, murmuring deliriously:
"How could this happen? I am a BeastMaster. I am really Maurice Ash. I am not a monster... If I am not me... who am I..."
"Ahh!"
A shriek echoed. A woman looked at the Chief in front of her, her face displaying an expression of horror. The rest of them also looked on in disbelief.
