Chapter 346: Chapter 346 The Policewoman’s Embarrassment
As soon as Zhang Jiefang left, the mastermind behind the chess disruption surfaced.
Despite her suspicions, upon hearing what the three kids said, Zhang’s mom understood that her husband orchestrated everything out of fear of losing.
Zhang Lu immediately laughed and quipped, "Dad actually can’t stand losing sometimes?"
Just now, she only meant to educate the three kids, not expecting that the innocent Yaya trio would reveal the truth.
"It’s your big mouth, look how it backfired now?" Ye Fan said amusedly.
"I didn’t expect this at all," Zhang Lu said frustratingly, thinking her dad’s face was now completely lost, having had his covering blown away. How could her face-saving dad still have the face to eat now? Not getting furious would be a stretch.
"Don’t mind him. Let’s eat," Zhang’s mom cheerily invited, serving Ye Fan some food, "Xiao Ye, eat more."
"Auntie, I can serve myself," Ye Fan said politely.
With Zhang’s mom’s lively efforts, everyone ate together.
Zhang Lu had a very good impression of Ye Fan’s behavior here. At the very least, he called her ’auntie’ repeatedly, performing well. There was nothing to criticize about this boyfriend act, at least he satisfied her mother.
As for angering her dad, that could be put aside for now.
"Grandma, did we do something wrong?" the three children asked anxiously, "Why did grandpa suddenly get angry?"
"It’s nothing. Your grandpa lost a game of chess and couldn’t take it on the face. That’s why he had you cause trouble. He has no face left now, so he hid away," Zhang’s mom explained, secretly blaming him, "This old crank, throwing a tantrum in front of the kids and Xiao Ye, it’s really improper."
"Ah, grandpa gets shy too?" the three kids exclaimed in surprise.
In his study, Zhang Jiefang’s expression was stormy. After venting by kicking the table and chairs, he said in a deep voice, "I have to deal with that boy. If I don’t subdue him, my standing in the family will plummet. Besides, he made me lose all my face. I must settle this score."
After thinking for a long time, Zhang Jiefang took out a few bottles of liquor, grabbed them, and left the study.
Zhang Jiefang returned to the dining table, opened the bottles, and poured drinks before boldly saying, "You drink alcohol, right? Any man would drink. Don’t make excuses that you don’t drink."
To keep Ye Fan quiet, Zhang Jiefang even resorted to implying that not drinking would be unmanly.
"Old crank, what are you doing?" Zhang’s mom was displeased.
"Dad, just let it go. Don’t drink," Zhang Lu advised.
"It’s none of your business. Stay out of it. This is between men; you women shouldn’t interfere," Zhang Jiefang said impatiently.
Ye Fan gave a peculiar smile and said awkwardly, "You’re an elder, you shouldn’t be drinking. What if I offer you a kilogram of liquor, would you drink it?"
"Offer me a drink, I get to decide if I’ll drink," Zhang Jiefang’s lips twitched, really wanting to slap Ye Fan twice. Opening with an offer of a kilogram—who would say such things? Really shameless.
He said coldly, "Stop with the useless chatter. Dare to drink or not? If you’re chickening out, just admit it."
"You’re trying to save face, huh? Fine, I’ll drink with you," Ye Fan agreed readily.
A cup was placed in front of each of them.
Zhang Jiefang said, "I drink a cup, you drink a cup. Simple rule."
"No problem," Ye Fan said casually. Since Zhang Jiefang wanted to regain his dignity, he could only keep him company. Letting Zhang Jiefang fall entirely onto the table would resolve everything peacefully. By then, Zhang Jiefang should have no tricks left and would have to behave.
The two started drinking. After finishing the brought liquor, Zhang Jiefang ordered more, and Zhang’s mom fetched it.
Before long, Zhang Jiefang was out of it, dizzy, his vision blurry, and really couldn’t drink anymore.
"I can’t continue, not drinking anymore, okay? You win," Ye Fan spoke first. Actually, he was fine, but Zhang Jiefang was about to be completely drunk. Drinking more would make him pass out totally, so it’d be better to give Zhang Jiefang a little face.
"What do you mean by you win, drink, keep drinking," Zhang Jiefang still thought Ye Fan really couldn’t go on, and he could hold on for a bit more. At that moment, he had to push forward until Ye Fan was drunk—otherwise, how could he face it?
"It’s your turn," Zhang Jiefang drank a cup and humorously looked at Ye Fan.
Ye Fan raised his cup and drank.
And so, back and forth, after a few cups, Zhang Jiefang genuinely couldn’t take it any longer. He still hoped he could see Ye Fan fall first before he did. Unexpectedly, in the end, he was the one who was incapacitated.
Zhang Jiefang’s head slumped and he collapsed onto the table, snoring softly.
"Finally, some peace," Ye Fan sighed helplessly. To stop Zhang Jiefang’s provocations, he could only drink him out of consciousness. Otherwise, it would be endless trouble, who knows what else might happen. This way was better; it was clear Zhang Jiefang dreaming of winning him in a drinking contest was daylight dreaming.
"Xiao Ye, are you alright?" Zhang’s mom asked with concern. She had a newfound respect for Ye Fan. He had beaten her husband in chess and now in drinking, and she knew her husband, who loved drinking, could usually handle a large amount without getting drunk.
Seeing Zhang Jiefang out cold, Zhang’s mom also breathed a sigh of relief. Otherwise, he’d find other ways to compete with Ye Fan, determined not to let him win in any aspect. Once drunk, he couldn’t do anything anyway.
"I’m fine," Ye Fan replied.
"Mom, don’t worry about him. Dad wants to compete in drinking, but he’s no match for Ye Fan," Zhang Lu said, laughing and crying, knowing Ye Fan’s capacity from his bout with Xu Dalong.
Ye Fan helped drag Zhang Jiefang to the bedroom and let him sleep.
After dinner, Zhang’s mom went to wash the dishes. Zhang Lu and Ye Fan initially wanted to help, but Zhang’s mom shooed them away. Her intention was clear; she wanted Ye Fan and her daughter to have more time to chat, without her being the third wheel.
The three children, including Yaya, surrounded Ye Fan and Zhang Lu, watching TV, asking all sorts of questions, chattering nonstop.
Soon, it was around ten at night.
"Yaya, Xuanxuan, Mingming, it’s bedtime," Zhang’s mom called the three kids to bed, then went to rest herself, leaving Ye Fan and Zhang Lu by themselves in the living room.
Zhang’s mom didn’t prepare a room for Ye Fan, not even mentioning it. Clearly, she wanted Ye Fan to share a room with Zhang Lu, naturally her daughter’s own bedroom.
With her daughter taking care of Ye Fan, Zhang’s mom naturally didn’t need to worry.
Next, Zhang Lu felt awkward, hesitating for a long time before speaking, "How about you make do in the guest room for a night?"
Not wanting her mother to see through their act, she really wanted Ye Fan to continue playing the part and go with her to her room.
However, she couldn’t bring herself to ask Ye Fan to eagerly share a room with her, or even worse, suggest they sleep together.
