Chapter 53: The Dragon Empress vs The Harbinger
Chapter 53: The Dragon Empress vs The Harbinger
The Dragon Empress and the Harbinger faced each other in brittle silence. The Dragon Empress stood ramrod‑straight, her gaze glacial, while the Harbinger hummed behind a saccharine smile. The moment they unleashed their layered, escalating mana through honed skills, their earlier contrast shattered.
The Empress’s robes fluttered of their own accord, long sleeves billowing as raw mana spilled from her curves like scaled violet dragon tails. Opposite her, the Harbinger’s mana writhed across the stone floor in black tendrils braided with pale‑green, tentacle‑like strands that slithered from beneath her short skirt, obscene and revolting in equal measure.
The Harbinger stretched out her hand and splayed her fingers, a wet, bone‑scraping tear splitting the air. A thin cut bloomed across her palm, coughing up a spiked club studded with the fangs of countless species. She wrapped her bleeding hand around the hilt and rested the weapon on her shoulder.
"This body’s real owner came from another world, sweetheart, a sweet little lass, and I’ve borrowed more than a bit from her," she giggled. "Alas, she fought with a spear, always calculated, precise, and dreadfully dull, even when I flooded her veins with my mana. Oh, how tragic that I had to finish her off from the inside just because she refused to evolve, despite her aching desire to go home. And you, Dragon Empress, are you still spurning my offer? I can unlock the power the old Warden sealed in your kind.""
"The stench of human spawn offends Us," the Empress replied, her voice crystalline and frigid. "Cease your barking and fight, or with a single gesture We shall flay you alive."
"Oh, how scary~," the Harbinger sang. "Very well—I’ll make the first move!"
She lifted the club overhead. Its fangs snapped at empty air before she brought it down, releasing a yellow‑white gleam that fired every tooth like a swarm of daggers. They screamed toward the Empress.
The Dragon Empress raised a hand diagonally across her body, unleashing a surge of draconic mana that rolled out in a bone‑deep tug, as if gravity itself warped toward her. A violet gale met the storm of fangs, sparks hissing where power collided. The teeth dimmed and clattered to the floor, lifeless.
Unfazed, the Harbinger flashed a wider grin and shook her club. Fresh fangs erupted along the shaft. She steadied her stance and wound up for a throw.
"Mana alone won’t save you now, darling Empress!" she trilled.
She unleashed the club like a rocket, gnawing fangs spinning.
The Empress brought up her dominant hand, shaping it into a dragon’s claw the size of a human palm. Scaled violet streams flowed between her fingers, and spectral dragon teeth lined her palm.
With a precise thrust she caught the weapon without so much as a tremor, her power biting into the club and devouring it whole.
"That must be the legendary Dragon Void Maw," the Harbinger cooed, her voice echoing inside the mana storm even as her presence slipped behind the Empress. "Conceptually, we’re so alike! Imagine how far we could push dragon‑kind together!"
Sensing danger at her back, the Empress slid her left foot and half‑spun. Her robe slit high over her thigh. A faint mana glow traced over a black kneesock patterned with coiling dragons, hugging her toned yet soft leg. From that tantalizing reveal, a razor‑edged tail snapped forward, carving the Harbinger from stomach to collarbone and tearing her school uniform to ribbons. Blood erupted, the host body spasming from pain the mind could scarcely process, yet sheer will kept it upright.
With cold grace the Empress completed the turn, her emerald eyes flashing beneath crown‑like horns as her claw expanded into an enormous talon that clamped the Harbinger against a wall, her limp body sagging, head lolling in utter helplessness. The Dragon Void Maw yawned within the claw’s palm, chewing into flesh. Blood sprayed like a revved chainsaw, sheeted walls, and pooled beneath their feet.
When the Harbinger’s consciousness snapped back into her ravaged host, the Empress’s tone dropped to glacial steel. "You are but one of many Harbingers—a parasite in human flesh. You will pay dearly for daring to oppose Us."
Blood pattered past the Harbinger’s smiling lips. "I know your Dragon Void Maw can erase anything from this world, and you believe that will kill me. Sadly, my lovely Empress, the you of today can only dream of my death. How could I die when there’s still so much evolution to be had?"
A new presence slipped past the Empress, darting toward the royal entrance of the Dragon Catacombs. She caught only a single golden, draconic eye embedded in a slick black eyeball before it vanished into the darkness.
Not human—nor dragon. Who? she wondered.
Moments later, the Harbinger’s body was gone, leaving only steaming blood on stone. The Empress strode to the entrance and found her secretary collapsed in a widening scarlet pool, one hand pressed to his side.
"F‑Forgive me, Her Majesty... I let the... enemy... slip past me..." he rasped.
The Empress regarded him for a single breath. "Light Dragon."
From beyond the balcony a soldier answered, transforming into a golden beam that shot into the forbidden precinct. Though the guards had sensed the earlier clash, none dared enter her presence without leave.
The beam condensed into a humanoid dragon who knelt. "May Your might forever oversee us."
"Take him to the Imperial Doctor at once," she ordered.
He gathered the wounded secretary and raced up the corridor.
The Empress returned to the rail, her silhouette a regal stillness against the cavernous depths as distant roars and echoing screams rose from below, gaze sweeping the catacombs. "Light Dragon."
Another dragon flashed before her and bowed. "May Your eyes forever oversee us."
"Announce to Our kin: danger has breached the Dragon Realm."
"As You command, Her Majesty. And the coward?"
"Such tidings cannot elude him. He shall be the last to hear."
"Understood, Her Majesty."
