My Lady Always Lacks Ambition
Chapter 294 - 293: Something’s Off About This New Ghost

Chapter 294: Chapter 293: Something’s Off About This New Ghost

Qin Liuxi stood motionless; Housekeeper Jiang noticed and followed her gaze, his face subtly changing.

"Master? This way, please?"

Qin Liuxi withdrew her gaze and continued to walk forward, conversing with the house ghost, "Something’s not right. You said Miss Xiao fell for that Fusheng just over two months ago. Even if we count from the longest estimate, Fusheng would only be dead for at most a couple of months, making her merely a new ghost. But for a new ghost, no matter how resentful or hateful, this intense evil aura is abnormal, strong enough to affect the Qi Fortune of the entire mansion."

The house ghost replied, "What you say is true, sir. I have been haunting this estate for thirty or forty years; you can call me an old ghost. At first, I didn’t notice anything, but as time passed, the resentful energy from Miss Xiao’s quarters grew deeper, as though some frightful presence had arrived. I don’t dare to get close."

Swallowing his saliva, he continued, "In fact, at the beginning, Miss Xiao was only half-mad, still able to recognize people. But gradually, she grew more delirious, hardly recognizing anyone and disliking people coming close. Several doctors summoned by the governor’s mansion could not identify the problem, and they even called in a witch. A while ago, they invited a Daoist priest who performed rituals which only provided peace for two days, before things worsened. Since then the Yin Evil energy has become like this. Out of curiosity, I tried to take a look, but as soon as I neared the courtyard, I felt my soul weaken, as if being sucked into something."

Qin Liuxi rubbed her fingers, a fleeting look of doubt crossing her eyes.

Such potent evil aura from a new ghost leads to the question: did Fusheng do something before death, was something done to her after death, or is it due to some other cause?

This riddle can only be solved by rescuing Miss Xiao and finding Fusheng’s soul.

"Does the Xiao Family have any dirty secrets?" Mu Xi leaned in and whispered.

Seeing Mu Xi draped in talismans, the old ghost was frightened and drifted further away.

Qin Liuxi remarked, "You come to someone’s house imposingly, how can you be so nosy?"

"Can’t I just ask?" Mu Xi rubbed his arms discontentedly, "If not for you, I wouldn’t have come here. I felt uncomfortable the moment I entered, chilling to the bone."

Qin Liuxi raised an eyebrow, "You feel uncomfortable?"

Mu Xi nodded, "I feel cold all over."

Qin Liuxi glanced again in the direction of the evil aura, a sharp glint flashing in her eyes.

With his light fate and pure Yin physique, Mu Xi could sense unpleasant things more than average people, just like now.

She observed the people coming and going within the governor’s mansion who, to varying degrees, were afflicted by the evil spirit and thus experiencing misfortune.

"Housekeeper, has anyone in the mansion fallen ill or had accidents recently?" Qin Liuxi asked the Housekeeper Jiang leading the way.

Housekeeper Jiang was momentarily stunned, then responded, "These past few days, indeed there have been several servants who’ve caught colds or injured their legs."

"What about the servants attending to your young lady?"

Housekeeper Jiang’s expression changed to one of caution, his gaze shifting towards Mu Xi.

Seeing his reaction, Mu Xi snorted, clearly aware that the housekeeper was wary of his status or fearing he might spread word outside.

Qin Liuxi then said, "Though Heir Mu might be a playboy, he’s not a gossiping woman. Since he has come to visit your esteemed house, he would not idly discuss your private affairs. What do you think, young master?"

Mu Xi lifted his chin arrogantly, "I am of noble status, not some vulgar village woman who gossips. Given the time, I’d rather be tending to my precious horses."

With that, he strode off.

Only then did Housekeeper Jiang cautiously say, "Since the master has come here to alleviate the concerns of our family, I will not hide it from you. All the servants in the young lady’s quarters have been replaced, and the most severely afflicted one, died."

"How did he die?"

Housekeeper Jiang saw that she wasn’t surprised and felt an inexplicable sense of relief, though his face showed fear, "Scared to death."

"Oh?"

Housekeeper Jiang said with a stern face: "According to another servant, she saw something during her shift, was scared stiff, and when she died, her eyes were wide open, and her face was swollen purple. Master, since Miss has not yet been married off, having her servant die of fright will only lead to speculation. Please, Master, help cover this up for our Miss."

As he spoke, he made a deep bow to Qin Liuxi.

But Qin Liuxi just laughed: "You dare speak of this."

"Master, since you graced us with your presence, you have discerning eyes, and I wouldn’t dare to keep anything from you. Keeping quiet might not be for the best. I’ve watched the Miss grow up, and I don’t wish to see her continue down this path to madness," Housekeeper Jiang said with a pained expression.

Qin Liuxi nodded and followed Mu Xi, saying to him: "Don’t stay at the governor’s mansion, have your guard find another place for you."

Mu Xi was startled: "Is there really a ghost in this mansion? No way, this is the governor’s mansion, aren’t we under the protection of the God of Literature and Education? How can that kind of thing dare to make trouble here?"

"Little ghosts normally wouldn’t dare cause trouble, but the origins of the one in this mansion are unclear, and with your yin constitution, you’re more prone to attracting trouble. For your own sake, and for the safety of everyone at the governor’s mansion, it’s better if you keep your distance," thought Qin Liuxi, it’s also to save your dog life.

When Xiao Zhanrui caught up, he overheard this remark and his expression changed several times, nearly twisting his ankle.

But rather than being scared, Mu Xi was secretly delighted and looked at her, saying: "Are you worried about this Princely Heir?"

Qin Liuxi replied: "I’m concerned that during the exorcism, that thing might bump into you, and then I’d be unable to act. In other words, I’m worried you might hold me back, understand?"

Mu Xi, infuriated, patted the talismans on his body and even pulled out the Thunderstruck Wood Talisman that Qin Liuxi had given him, saying: "Are you saying the lifesaving items on this Princely Heir are useless?"

Qin Liuxi glared at him.

Mu Xi refused to back down, standing his ground.

Xiao Zhanrui tentatively stepped forward and asked: "May I ask, Master, what did you mean just now?"

Qin Liuxi glanced at him and said: "Something rather terrible has come to your sister’s courtyard."

Xiao Zhanrui felt weak in the knees.

"Are you leaving or not?" Qin Liuxi glared at Mu Xi again.

Mu Xi declared: "I’m not leaving! Since I’ve entered this place, I might already have been targeted. Staying close to you might actually be safer!"

It made deadly sense.

But Qin Liuxi remained unmoved and entered the courtyard prepared by the Xiao family, instructing Housekeeper Jiang to prepare a few items she requested.

Upon hearing this, Housekeeper Jiang asked: "Master, do you need black dog blood and a rooster?"

Qin Liuxi’s face revealed a mysterious expression, looking at him and asking: "What do you need those things for?"

"You’ve already requested vermilion and yellow paper and such, setting up an altar for the ritual. Don’t you need these exorcism items to eradicate evil spirits?" Housekeeper Jiang said.

Qin Liuxi responded: "Why don’t you also find me a magic robe and Dharma Hat, and match it with a Seven-star Peach Wood Sword? Right, the magic robe has to be made with pure gold thread, so when I wield the sword, it can shimmer with golden light."

Housekeeper Jiang was perplexed.

Mu Xi snorted with laughter and said: "She’s teasing you. Just prepare what she asked for, no need for any extra questions."

Housekeeper Jiang laughed awkwardly: "I was overstepping."

"Go and get ready," Qin Liuxi waved her hand dismissively.
