Chapter 48: With Unexpected Ease and Gains

Hal and Liora huffed and puffed as they sprinted toward the site of carnage.

Liora couldn’t help but feel nauseous upon arrival, not expecting to see more than twenty dead Dharmwolves and two Alphas.

It looked like they would’ve been in for some serious trouble, as the two packs had shockingly been coexisting and caring for their young together.

Yet, despite having two E-ranked Alphas and eighteen F-ranked Betas, they were still wiped out.

Dharmwolves were among the bottom-feeders of the E-rankers when it came to individual combat prowess.

However, when united with their pack, even a single group of Dharmwolves could have systematically taken down a Reptilian.

With two such packs merging, their strength would’ve been far more than just double.

Hal shivered at the thought of what kind of creature could have killed them all.

It might have been a D-ranked beast, though even that seemed like a stretch.

Taking down a combined pack with two Alphas was not as simple as one plus one equals two.

Just as Hal was surveying the scene, he felt a fleeting, spine-chilling gaze from the direction of the cubs.

He swallowed hard and immediately grabbed Liora’s wrist, slowly backing away from the scattered bodies.

His eyes swept the surroundings and his heart thundered in his chest.

Had they been spotted?

The unsettling sensation was so brief that he couldn’t tell if it was real or just his nerves.

He was confident he could blink to safety and avoid instant death, but he doubted Liora could do the same.

All he could do was silently pray to the divinities for a safe retreat.

Fortunately, it seemed his prayers were heard.

They didn’t encounter whatever monster had cast that terrifying gaze.

The two reached the cover of thick bushes, though whether it could truly be called safe was another matter.

Still, it was better than standing exposed.

Liora was trembling slightly beside him.

Their futures might be bright, but would they even live to see that day?

Hal took one deep breath and focused his eyes once more on the Spirit Sparrow’s vision.

It was perched on a high branch, right above the Dharmwolf massacre, granting him a clear view.

Gradually, Hal was able to relax, though his brows remained furrowed in confusion.

He controlled his summon to circle the area a few more times, even going so far as to risk its safety and lower its flying height for a better view.

Still nothing...

Yet, the Dharmwolf cubs continued to tremble, none daring to take a step from where they were.

Except for one of the cubs.

Perching the Spirit Sparrow on a low branch, Hal observed the black-furred cub that was the same size as the regular gray-furred ones.

All of them were slightly smaller than one particular cub, which seemed destined to lead its own pack someday if it survived this ordeal.

The odd one with the different-colored fur appeared too dim-witted to understand the situation it was in.

Its cross-eyed gaze struggled to focus on the tiny avian, tail wagging excitedly as if it wanted to play chase with the sparrow.

Hal didn’t dare let his guard down just yet and continued flying his summon a few more times.

Only when he was certain it was safe did he and Liora emerge from the cover of the bushes, the latter now considerably more composed than she had been earlier.

They returned to the scene and began surveying it with a much calmer demeanor.

The sight was gruesome, but luckily, the parts they needed remained intact.

It seemed they would be able to complete their mission without fighting a tough battle.

Before they harvested the paws and fangs, however, the duo turned their attention to the poor cubs and scratched their heads.

The poor little things would certainly perish within a week if they left them here...

’Aihh...but how would we take them back with us...?’

There were at least fifteen cubs, and the two of them, at most, could carry three or four each.

It was then that he felt something bump lightly onto his right ankle, prompting Hal to turn slightly and look.

’Hmm? What does this little one want?’

Hal instinctively picked up the cross-eyed, black-furred cub, staring at its comical face.

It struggled fiercely, attempting to lick his cheeks.

"Hahaha, what, you like me that much?"

He didn’t know why, but he instantly felt a connection to the strange little Dharmwolf.

"I’ve decided. I’m taking care of this little one!" Hal declared with a smile.

To his bewilderment...

[Congratulations! You’ve earned 500 Chaos Points!]

’W-What the hell?!’

Meanwhile, Liora’s brows furrowed for a moment, then lifted as she scanned the cubs.

She wanted one too...

They were just too cute!

The white-haired young lady had originally set her sights on an E-ranked Reptilian egg, believing it to be the easiest to obtain.

Taming would have been almost guaranteed, even without the Tame spell, if she could manage to hatch it.

Unfortunately, a few weeks earlier, she had realized she was still too weak to attempt such a feat and had been forced to give up on the idea for her safety, at least for the time being.

Who could have expected that she would get another chance so soon?

Even better, Canid-type beasts were known to be among the most loyal when raised properly.

And they were adorable as heck.

Her gaze settled on the largest cub, a young Alpha Dharmwolf.

A creature like that, if cared for properly, could potentially grow into a D-ranked beast.

It would serve her well throughout her novice days and become a reliable sentry and protector for the house she planned to buy in Hullberg City.

With one like it by her family’s side, she would no longer have to worry about her family’s safety in the future.

Since Hal had already chosen the weird cub...

"S-Say, Hal... if you’ve already chosen that one, c-can I have the young Alpha Dharmwolf? I also want one..."

There was only one Alpha among the litter, and it felt proper to ask before claiming it.

"H-Hmm? S-Sure, go ahead..." Hal responded absentmindedly, still wrestling with the curiosity and overwhelming happiness in his heart.

He had just earned 500 Chaos Points. Just like that...

What on earth did this goofy-looking cub have to do with him?

Why had Chaos granted him so many points simply for deciding to adopt it?
