Chapter 110: The Wolf Ate Wolfe

Hal ascended the stage with a calm and cool demeanor, irritating a few of the onlookers.

The matchmaking had positioned his first match as the main highlight of the opening round, as he was up against the perceived strongest among the preliminary candidates.

It was a setup that could expose Hal if he were a fraud who had used connections to secure a spot in the main tournament.

At the same time, it gave him the chance to prove his competence without killing the excitement of the later matches, since being the strongest among the preliminaries did not mean much compared to the tournament’s true top contenders.

Arriving at the center of the main stage, Hal sized up his opponent, and his opponent did the same.

Wolfe wasn’t so confident that he looked down on him.

However, the slightly shorter young man, dressed in a flashy black and gold wizard robe with his father’s company logo on the back, didn’t look nervous either.

Wolfe’s family was quite wealthy, so his father made the bold decision not to enroll him in the academy and instead placed him under the tutelage of a renowned Master Wizard.

This qualified him for a mana-bound artifact draw from the Arcane Repository, despite not being a student of the Grand Magic Academy.

Their wealth also granted them access to some lesser-known secrets, including how Hal managed to earn his spot and what rank of student he actually was.

Wolfe was certain that Hal was not on the level of the five-star students if he had needed to secure a slot in the tournament through a request.

The two of them were scheduled to start their battle last, so their staredown lasted quite a while.

It was then that the referee suddenly announced from the edge of the stage:

"Prepare."

Wolfe quickly drew his small grimoire and opened it, a slight, confident smile forming on his face.

Hal, on the other hand, remained nonchalant, simply staring at his opponent with the same indifferent gaze, which irked the rich young commoner slightly.

’Let’s see if you can still act this way later...’ Wolfe thought with a sneer.

The timer above their heads counted down, and soon:

"Begin!" the referee announced, jumping down from the stage.

Promptly after hearing the signal, the eager Wolfe pulled a small, compressed, translucent indigo magic circle from his grimoire, from which a Spirit Wolf emerged, drawing cheers from the crowd.

A summoner!

Such types of wizards were rare, so watching their battles was always refreshing and exciting.

But Wolfe wasn’t done.

As his wolf stood protectively in front of him, the young summoner pulled out two more magic circles—one releasing a tiny sparrow, the other a massive bear.

At this point, the crowd was going wild.

"Three summons!" exclaimed Akari from the commentator’s desk. "It seems Competitor Wolfe wants to end the battle swiftly. How will Competitor Hal respond?!"

Hal merely raised his brows, quickly swapping some cards out of his gesture slots.

’Why the hell is this idiot summoning a Spirit Sparrow?’ he mused.

He had already decided how he would respond: fight fire with fire, and in this case, fight summon with summon.

Hal only called upon his Spirit Sparrow and his Spirit Wolf, though, both of which looked entirely different than his opponent’s.

His summons were not only extremely vivid, but they looked somewhat realistic as well.

The crowd fell silent.

What are the odds of two summoners encountering each other in the first round?

However, their initial surprise soon turned into disappointment.

Two summoners having a summons skirmish was cool and all, but if Hal didn’t have a Spirit Bear, wouldn’t he simply be overwhelmed by his opponent?

The more knowledgeable observers, however, knew that things weren’t as simple as they seemed.

While Wolfe had more summons, Hal Fennec’s were of a higher level of mastery.

As for just how high his mastery was, only the next few seconds would tell.

Wolfe willed his Spirit Sparrow to fly forward.

It tore through the air, headed straight for Hal’s forehead, which utterly confused him.

’What the hell is this guy doing?!’

Hal casually swatted the Spirit Sparrow to the ground with his bare hand, as though it were nothing more than a fly.

The tiny summon quickly reached the maximum damage it could take and dissipated into mana particles soon after.

"Competitor Hal brutally slaps the Spirit Sparrow to death!" announced Akari, her cute yet excited voice trembling.

"Report this man for summon abuse!" chimed the older Jhow, Akari’s co-commentator, jokingly adding flavor to the battle.

The commentators’ words finally pushed the already frustrated and slightly dumbfounded Wolfe over the edge.

"You dare mock me?!" he roared.

Hal was taken aback, not expecting his opponent to suddenly explode in anger.

What was the guy expecting him to do? Waste a spell on such a weak creature?

He had relied on the Spirit Sparrow to navigate through the Runeforest, so he knew it wasn’t meant for offensive use.

At best, it could serve as a distraction for a stronger attack.

Hal was simply too familiar with the creature to be bamboozled by such a dumb move.

Wolfe gritted his teeth at Hal’s lack of reaction.

"You think you can act like this just because others see you as mysterious? I know what you really did to get your spot, and I’ll teach you that a shroud of mystery only goes so far without real skill to back it up!"

In the next moment, the Spirit Bear and the Spirit Wolf rushed toward Hal, the former charging in a straight line while the latter zigzagged to display its speed and agility.

Hal didn’t show much of a reaction.

He simply controlled his wolf in return.

The semi-realistic summoned gray wolf quickly demonstrated its superior speed, zigzagging toward the enemy wolf under the dumbfounded gazes of the crowd.

Wolfe couldn’t even react.

His Spirit Wolf was caught by the throat before he realized what had happened.

"Release it!" he roared, commanding his Spirit Bear, which had just reached attacking range, to smash its paw down on Hal’s Spirit Wolf.

It surely wouldn’t survive if struck.

But neither would Wolfe’s own wolf.

Just before it was crushed by the bear, Hal’s wolf released its grip and leaped back, dodging the massive paw.

As a result, Wolfe destroyed his own summon.

In his frustration, he failed to notice that Hal’s wolf was already heading straight for him, ignoring the Spirit Bear entirely.

By the time he realized, it was far too late.

The last thing he saw was a Spirit Wolf’s maw wide open in front of his face.
